A mid-19th century Swedish Gustavian style painted wood stick back kitchen sofa or bench, circa 1850s. Scraped to the original off white paint, this antique sofa bench is typical of the Swedish desire for light and soft colors that helped bring light to rooms during the very dark winters in Scandanavia. Showcasing the stylistic characteristics of the Gustavian era, it features carved flat spindles or slats topped with petite carved finials adorning the back and arm supports and a long rectangular upholstered lift seat that opens to reveal a convenient storage compartment. Raised on six short tapered feet. For hundreds of years, kitchen sofas were very common in Swedish homes. Acting as a sofa or bench for the kitchen table, they could also be used as an additional bed for the kitchen staff to rest.
