We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around.
Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...

Impressionist painting by the Swiss painter Jeanniot. It is oil on a mahogany panel, the painting is signed in the lower left and dated 1884.
On the back is a label, presumably stuck on it by a previous owner, with information about the painter.
The painting has an Art Nouveau frame, woodwork with stucco, gilded and decorated with typical Art Nouveau flowers.

Pierre-Georges Jeanniot
Switzerland, 1848-1934
The artistic education of Pierre Georges Jeanniot began with his father, Pierre-alexander Jeanniot (1826–1892), a longtime director of l’École des Beaux-arts of Dijon, France. Nevertheless, Pierre-Georges Jeanniot started out pursuing a military career, as an infantry officer (1866–1881), but he never ceased drawing. He was known for the first time in 1872 at the art exhibition salon de Paris, where he presented a watercolor painting called 'intérieur de forêt'.
The next year he presented the painting 'Le Vernan à nass- sous-Sainte-anne'. From then on he was a regular contributor to the salon de Paris, where he presented new works with views of Toulouse, Paris, Troyes, the edges of the seine, and some portraits. In 1881, after the army offered him the rank of commandant, he resigned to devote himself exclusively to painting. He took up residence in Paris. His works from this period represent mainly scenes of military life that allowed him to forge a reputation. Jeanniot established himself permanently in 1882 and obtained his first award the following year (medal third class of the Salon de Paris).
From then on, he started to show a certain artistic independence. He then mostly portrayed Parisian women during the “Belle Époque”, women in bathing suits...

Flower still life with dahlias, in beautiful, vibrant colors. Oil on canvas. The round format is very unusual. Frame and canvas are an original whole. The painting is signed in the paint on the lower right and dated, 1934. The painting is framed behind anti-reflective glass, which means that the colors are beautifully preserved. The frame is subtly carved in Art Deco style. A similar painting by the same painter is depicted in an old exhibition book by this painter. See picture. His work work has also been purchased by various museums.
The book about Gaston Geleyn is beautifully illustrated, 170 pages and it is about the life and work of the artist. The book was published in 1933. Book is supplied with the painting.

GELEYN, Gaston (Brussels, 1892 - Grimbergen 1949).
Painter. Stayed with a great uncle in Paris until he was 16 years old. After a short stay in Brussels, he returned to Paris and attended classes at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts led by Roll and Flaming. After the First World War he traveled the world and stayed in America, India and North Africa, among other places. He was under contract from 1919 to 1929 by a Dutch art dealer. His first exhibition was at the 'Giroux' Gallery in Brussels in 1933. Geleyn painted landscapes, marines, figure still lifes and flowers. He also painted the portrait of King Albert I. Hashimoto Dokuzan was a leading figure in early twentieth-century Zen Buddhism, serving as abbot of the major monastery Shōkokuji in the city of Kyoto and served as chief, kanchō, of the Shōkokuji branch of the Rinzai sect of Zen from 1909 to 1933. Before he entered the priesthood, he trained to be a painter under the celebrated literati artist Tomioka Tessai and continued to paint throughout his life. The present worked shows a lone Chinese man in a deep woods, leaning over the railing of a stone bridge to gaze at rushing stream below—a scene of communion with nature that East Asian painters...
