Impressive Mid-Century Still Life Painting by Franz Pricking dated 1955
By Franz Priking
Located in Chicago, IL
Stunning still life of fruit by German artist Franz Priking. Painted primarily in shades of gold, deep green and black and housed in a beautiful frame that has gilded accents, this original work of art is a stunner. Signed and dated in the upper right hand corner "Pricking 1955". There is a label on the reverse side from World House Galleries on Madison Ave in NYC. The label states the artist is French (where he resided at the time this work was painted).
Priking was born in Germany and was eleven years old when WWII broke out. It is said that the war influenced him and his art for the rest of his life. Immediately after the war he began to show an affinity for the Expressionist art that was banned by the Nazis. Priking was a student of Max Pechstein by 1948 at the Bauhaus, and by 1952 he had moved to southern France, meeting Picasso at Vallauris. Picasso is said to have strongly encouraged him, saying he would become one of the great artists of the century. He exhibited mostly in Europe but also in Tokyo and Sao Paolo. The artist's use of black (prominent in this work) is said to reflect the darkness of his early years during the war. His work moved through various phases, beginning with Fauvism and Cubism, moving through Expressionism and finally on to abstraction in his final decade. In 1958 he was awarded the Prix de la Jeune Peinture in Paris, in 1961 he was elected a member of the International Institute of Arts and Letters in Geneva. He died at barely age 50, cutting short a promising career. In 1990 when Ecole de Paris paintings...

Oil Painting on Tooled Leather of a Putti or Cherub Male Child from Spain 17th C
Located in Chicago, IL
Beautiful 17th century Tooled Leather Oil Painting mounted on board and our best hypothesis is that it is probably Spanish, with a second guess possibly being Dutch. What we do know from a local expert, is that the Putti or Cherub is close to 400-years old. The correct word I believe is actually Putto which is singular for Putti and depicts a chubby small child, typically male. The Putti painting...

Early 20th Century Southern American Folk Art Painting
Located in Chicago, IL
A captivating and intriguing early 20th century Southern American folk art panel, found in Mississippi, depicting a figure with what appears to be African tribal headgear, and wearing a white collared shirt with black suit jacket. The line work and attention to detail is extraordinary and mysterious, with the artist choosing to incorporate a natural knot in the board to form the mouth of the figure, and the left half of the drawing showing shading, but seemingly left unfinished. The frame is not terribly old, and is constructed from splatter-painted boards...

Framed American Minimalist Drawing, 1978
Located in Chicago, IL
A chic and impactful American Minimalist geometric drawing with two large charcoal circles, several interlocking white circles, and set against a bold cobalt blue pastel background. Framed in a custom oak gallery frame. Signed and dated illegibly in the LR. Signed 'Frank 1978' on the reverse.
The Minimalism art movement is one of the most influential of the 1960s and 70s, among a number of artists who were moving away from Abstract Expressionism, favoring a sleek, geometric aesthetic instead. These artists wanted to create art that referred only to itself, allowing the viewer an immediate, purely visual response. The personal, gestural elements of Abstract Expressionism were stripped away with the aim to reveal the objective, visual elements of art. Important Minimalist artists...

Pair of Framed Chinese Ancestor Portraits, circa 1880s
Located in Chicago, IL
Believing that the departed continue to hold influence over the lives of the living, many Chinese households honor their ancestors in private family rituals, invoking their spirits for long life, health, and prosperity. Commemorative portraits, which came into vogue in the late Ming and Qing dynasties, were commissioned specifically for ancestor worship and were believed to house the spirits of the deceased. When properly cared for, one's ancestors were believed to be a powerful source of honor, protection, and good luck.
This pair of ancestor portraits was hand-painted in the late-19th century and beautifully depicts a Qing-dynasty couple. While some ancestral portraits offer a more stylized representation of one's ancestors, this particular pair is painted with incredible realism and life-like expressions. Rather than depict the pair in a regal hall wearing elaborate finery, the couple is shown in a quiet home environment, seated at either end of a square tea table. Their surroundings are minimal, practically undecorated, and they wear simple, matching blue silk robes. Two young children stand beside them, each trying to capture the attention of their grandparent. We love the painting's close attention to detail and the glimpse it offers of Qing-dynasty interiors - from the carved apron of the marble-top table to the red silk lotus slippers...

Chinese Reverse Glass Painting of Taoist Immortals, c. 1900
Located in Chicago, IL
Popularized during the Qing dynasty, reverse glass painting requires an artist to essentially work backwards, starting with details and shading before adding color and form. Lending the finished work a subtle three-dimensional effect, this exacting technique doesn't allow for any corrections, and is only revealed to its full effect when the glass pane is turned around. This example dates to the late 19th century and depicts the Taoist immortals He Xiangu and Cao Guojiu. Said to have attained immortality through their studies of the natural world, the Eight Immortals each represent a different condition in life and impart blessings of prosperity and longevity. The charming scene is likely one of a set of...

Pierre Bosco Horse Races, Oil Painting
By Pierre Bosco
Located in Chicago, IL
A fabulous Mid-Century abstract oil painting titled Horse Races by Pierre Bosco. Displayed in a dark wood frame with gold inset and ready to hang. Excellent Condition, Original Condition Unaltered, No Imperfections.
A descendant of the famous Della Rovere family, Pierre was born on January 29, 1909 in Visco, the province of Udine in Italy where he grows up with his seven siblings.
At twenty-two he decides to leave his native Italy and move to Saint-Germain-en-Laye where he attends diligently the schools and painting workshops of the capital.
In 1940 he befriends the painter André Marchand and manages to make a living by selling occasionally and with the help from his family. However, he has his first solo exhibition in Paris in 1943 at the Galerie Roussel, boulevard Saint-Germain, but continues to pursue his work austerely in the silence of his studio. When his father dies in 1945, the painter returns to Italy to be with his family for some time after fifteen years of absence. After this homecoming, he returns to Paris in 1946, painting and making a living as an art restoration.
When he first discovers paintings of Cézanne, Pissarro, Gauguin and Rouault, he is convinced that his future is in Paris, where the “bohemian" lifestyle attracts painters and sculptors from around the world.
In 1957, Bosco is well known to the affluent elite of the French capital. He appears in numerous laudatory articles written by famous poets like Pierre Seghers, Jean Cocteau and Marcel Sauvage - who will dedicate a poem to him – including the French poet and novelist Henri Bosco, and the journalist and writer Louis Nucéra.
Bosco’s works of art stands among those of the biggest names in contemporary painting: Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Matisse, etc. This collaboration opens new doors...
