Vintage Painting of a Young Child - Oil on Board
Located in Centennial, CO
A charming vintage oil on fiber board painting of a young child with a blue and white cup and a piece of bread (?). Painted in shades of warm brown, pinks, maroons and whites. Surface abrasions and scratches are evident from rough handling. The board is stable and the paint is not flaking. There is some craquelure in the upper left and lower right quadrants but it is not loose. Framed in an old Victorian frame which has some losses due to age but is stable and gives the painting character. Overall just a fun and unique piece. Painting is unsigned. Unsure of country of origin. Additional detail photos available upon request. From the collection of a Boulder, Colorado interior designer who collected many antique pieces from France. Surface scratches and abrasions from rough handling at some point in time. There is some craquelure in the upper left and lower right quadrants but it is not loose. A few spots on the background area, see photos. Old Victorian frame is shabby chic and has losses in the plaster applique...

Large Signed Native American Hopi Original Mudhead Kachina Katsina Doll on Stand
By Native American Art
Located in Studio City, CA
A wonderfully handcrafted/detailed and decorated Native American Hopi Mudhead Kachina doll. Quite an unusually large work. A striking piece overall. Hand painted with leather and possibly turquoise (necklace) accompaniment. Hopi katsina figures, also known as kachina dolls, are figures carved, typically from cottonwood root by the Hopi people. Initially, kachina dolls were made to instruct young girls and new brides about katsinas or katsinam, the immortal beings that bring rain, control other aspects of the natural world and society, and act as messengers between humans and the spirit world. The Mudhead or Koyemsi figure is viewed as a clown/joker figure who is responsible for laughter and entertainment at Hopi dances and ceremonial events. He plays drums and games to keep his audience engaged. The piece is signed by the artist under the base. From an extensive collection of Native American objects and artifacts. Would be a great addition to any Native American Art...

"American Flags" by Dennis Lyall, Original Oil Painting on Canvas Board, 1988
Located in Colorado Springs, CO
This original oil painting on canvas, entitled American Flags, was painted by Dennis Lyall in 1988. The work originally appeared in the Fleetwood Triptych panel for the U.S. Flag stamps series. Lyall signed the work underneath the rightmost flag. Presented in a simple black archival frame, the painting depicts several variations of the American flag throughout the country’s history. Dennis Lyall, the artist, was born in Iowa and attended the University of Kansas. As a student, Lyall was awarded a Gold Medal by the Society of Illustrators. Afterwards, he worked as an illustrator for many years on advertisements for companies such as Nabisco, National Geographic Magazine, and NBC. Lyall is perhaps most known for his contributions to stamp design. Overall, the U.S. Postal Service has issued 34 stamps using his designs. This painting is one such example of his artwork that was used for the U.S. Flags stamp series. Lyall has served as a member of the Board of Directors for the Society of Illustrators in New York City and his works are part of the permanent collections of the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Air Force, and more. Artfully depicting several variations of the American flag, this painting reminds us that the flag we know today is only one of many different flags throughout the country’s history. Flags such as the Liberty Tree Flag, the Grand Union Flag, the well-known Betsy Ross Flag...

Ledger Art, "Sioux Medicine Men" by James Black 'Cheyenne'
Located in Denver, CO

Presented in a custom frame, outer dimensions measure 26 ¼ x 31 ¾ x ¾ inches. Image size is 17 ¾ x 23 ¾ inches. James Black (Southern Cheyenne/Arapaho and Oglala) is a Southern Cheyenne Sundance priest from Watonga, a small rural town in northwestern Oklahoma. Growing up in a traditional home and being influenced by the traditions of his people, James reflects his surroundings in his drawings. He wanted to pursue art but did not want to get into contemporary Native American Art such as drawing Indians with wolves and eagles. He knew his people did more traditional pictographic drawings known as ledger drawings. Studying more about this ledger art...
