"North American B-25B Mitchell Airplane" by Steve Ferguson, Mixed Media Painting

About the Item

Presented is an original mixed media painting by Steve Ferguson, entitled North American B-25B Mitchell Airplane. The work was painted for use on the Fleetwood Commemorative Cover of the U.S. 29-cent flag stamp, issued on August 19, 1994. In the image, the famous bomber plane soars high above the water. Ferguson’s painting shows the B-25B in action. For much of WWII, the U.S. medium bomber plane, the B-25B, dominated the skies. Also called the Mitchell airplane, the B-25B was the first of this type of bomber to see widespread combat during the war. Its fame comes largely from the surprise Doolittle Raid on April 18, 1942. Lieutenant Colonel James Doolittle led a raid of B-25B bombers to bypass formidable air defenses and drop bombs on Tokyo. A devastating loss for the Japanese, this attack raised morale for the American forces and was celebrated throughout the country, noting the impressive B-25B airplane and the part it played. The Mitchell airplane became one of the most dependable models of the war and played an integral role in the Pacific Theater. Steve Ferguson is an American artist, born in 1946. A technical illustrator, Steve received his professional training from the University of Colorado, Denver. A member of the Experimental Aircraft Association, he has had a wide variety of commissions on aviation subjects, but his real passion is for World War II paintings and illustrations. Steve owns Ferguson Graphics, a technical illustration firm and teaches art and technical illustration at the Rocky Mountain School of Art in Denver. CONDITION: Overall very good condition. • 1875 "North America" Map by J. Bartholomew
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original 1875 map of “North America.” The map was issued in Volume 1 of the Ninth Edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, published in Edinburgh. The map was drawn by famous Scottish mapmaker John Bartholomew. The map depicts North America, to include Greenland, the Dominion of Canada, the United States, Mexico, the countries of Central America, and the islands of the West Indies. Prominent rivers, mountain ranges, and cities are labeled on the map, and country borders are emphasized in red. The Encyclopædia Britannica has been published continuously since 1768, appearing in fifteen official editions. The landmark ninth edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, often called "the Scholar's Edition," was published from January 1875 to 1889 in 25 volumes. The editor and author of the “Foreword” was Thomas Spencer Baynes, the first English-born editor after a series of Scots. After 1880, Baynes was assisted by William Robertson Smith. The 9th edition is often lauded as a high point among early editions for scholarship. The 9th edition was far more luxurious than any previously printed Encyclopædia Britannicas, with thick boards and quality leather bindings, premier paper, and a production which took full advantage of the technological advances of printing in the years between the 1850s and 1870s. The publishers took advantage of the new ability to print large graphic illustrations on the same pages as the text, as opposed to limiting illustrations to separate copper plate engravings. Although this technology had first been used in a primitive fashion the 7th edition, and to a much lesser extent in the 8th, in the 9th edition there were thousands of quality illustrations and maps set...

  • "George Washington at Dorchester Heights" after Gilbert Stuart, Oil on Canvas
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is a framed oil-on-canvas painting entitled George Washington at Dorchester Heights by an unnamed artist. The painting dates to the mid-to-late 19th century and was modeled after the original 1806 painting by Gilbert Stuart. Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828) is best known for the hundreds of portraits he completed of American politicians and social figures during his lifetime. Stuart hoped to one day paint the first president of the United States, purportedly declaring to a friend: “I expect to make a fortune by Washington.” Stuart took on many government and private commissions during his life; his reputation and skill resulted in George Washington agreeing to sit for Stuart on three separate occasions. George Washington at Dorchester Heights was painted by Stuart in 1806. Washington stands beside his horse with a distant view of the city of Boston...

  • "U.S. Flag Behind Capitol" by Ron Sloan, Mixed Media Painting, 1985
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is “U.S. Flag Behind Capitol,” an original mixed-media painting by American artist Ron Sloan. The drawing shows an intricately detailed rendering of the front entrance to the United States Capitol building. Behind the Capitol is a large, waving American flag, set outside an orange-hued rounded rectangle. Sloan created this stunning artwork in February of 1985, for use on the Fleetwood First Day Cover of the 22 cent “Flag Over Capitol” stamp, issued in March of that same year. The painting depicts the iconic neoclassical building from the east orientation, with it’s dome towering overhead. Plans began in May of 1854 to build a new cast-iron dome for the United States Capitol. The then-architect of the Capitol Thomas Walter and his team were sold on the aesthetics of a new dome, as well as the utility of a fire-proof one. A year later, on March 3, 1855, President Franklin Pierce signed off on the appropriation of $100,000 to build the dome. Construction began in September of that year with the removal of the first dome raised by Charles Bulfinch. Over the next 11 years, the dome rose over the nation's capital. By December of 1863, Walter was able to set the bronze sculpture “Statue of Freedom” atop the dome. Thomas Walter resigned in 1865 and his replacement, Edward Clark, assumed the role of finishing the last aspects of the dome. Just over a month later, in January 1866, Constantino Brumidi, who had been hired to paint a fresco above the interior dome's oculus, removed the scaffolding used...

  • "Defiant Comanche" Mixed Media Sculpture by Chris Pardell
    Located in Colorado Springs, CO
Presented is an original mixed-media sculpture by Christopher Pardell, called "Defiant Comanche". The sculpture was produced in a limited edition by Legends, as number 167 of 950. The sculpture features the bust of Defiant Comanche Quanah Parker and was produced in 1991. The sculpture features the artist's signature "C.A. Pradell" in yellow ink on the font of the base, as well as an inscription of the artist's name on the back of the figure's sash. Quanah Parker was a war leader of the Quahadi band of the Comanche Nation and a prominent figure in the Red River War. Quanah Parker was never elected chief by his people but was appointed by the federal government as principal chief of the entire Comanche Nation. He became a primary emissary of southwest indigenous Americans to the United States legislature. Christopher Pardell began sculpting at young age. Influenced by the work of renowned sculptors Russell, Remington, and Rodin, Pardell wanted to pursue his passion for realism. His formal education was laid aside in favor of an apprentice mold maker position with a statuary company. As an apprentice to the Italian master artisans who ran the statuary, Christopher rapidly learned the skills that would enable him to excel as an artist and earn the stature that has come with his success. Never sketching his designs on paper, Christopher composes all of his work in three dimensions, in a marquette. This unique approach explains the unparalleled beauty and detail that are the trademarks of his work. Christopher's exceptional style and special talent have served to impress even the most discriminating collector. The sense of tragedy and drama of the Native American has long been an artistic theme of his. "I try to convey the spirit behind the Native American lifestyle. The sculptural nature of Native American dress...
