AFTER THE STORM.ROY PETLEY BRITISH contemporary impressionist
By Roy Petley
Located in Pollenca, Illes Baleares
Roy Petley After the storm as a freshness of colour and lucidity of brushstrokes found in his repertoire ensures his paintings remains exciting to the eye ‘Throughout his life he continued to pursue his objective of reproducing the ‘atmosphere and light’ that he sees all around him,’ The paintings that we n an age of “virtual reality” when the art of picture making is possible through the screen, and imagery is well considered when floating in formaldehyde, it is reassuring to find an evergreen of traditional values. Roy Petley has always lived life to the hilt, but he likes his friends to share his successes. He has known tough beginnings, but is aware of his talent and when he uses it to the full effect, it is devastating. Choosing familiar subjects he is able to embody each with feeling. Each image has something to say – the colour and draughtsmanship put in with a seeming casualness immediately awakening the viewer to the freshness of the work. More astonishing are his continuous successes, for whilst he has already become a legend in his own space, recent exhibitions overseas have proved that in reality his particular brand of figurative art is still very much alive and increasingly in demand. Roy Petley was the first born to what became a large family in Grantham, Lincolnshire in April 1951. Little affection was shown to him, and the only discipline was the bad tempter of his mother; by the time he was five he had been removed from his family and taken to the Woodlands school near Uckfield, Sussex. A home as well as a school for abandoned children. He cannot remember when he first began to draw – ‘Always, always’ is his claim – but it was at this school, and in the charge of his art master whose name he recalls as Price. He was a resident at the school for ten years, and tells a story fit for Vasari in that in being let loose in the art room, in a frenzied flurry of activity, he used in one week all of the material available for all of the pupils for one whole term. Formal recognition of his talent came when in 1967 at the age of sixteen he was awarded a place in the Brighton School of Art. With his family and educational background it had been decided without reference to him that he needed safe career prospect offered by training in commercial art. He found himself compelled to draw carefully and in great detail aesthetically unrewarding objects. When he asked if he might change to fine art he was refused. Regretting only that in some sense he had been betrayed by his art master at Woodlands, he cut short his term at University and hitch-hiked to Italy to see and learn from the great masterpieces that has so inspired him. He settled in Florence, haunting the Uffizi and Pitti galleries, examining with the closest scrutiny everything from Walter Paters...

Color use demonstrates Paulovics as fine master of tonal painting. Artist used impasto painting technique that uses thick, rich layers of paint. COUNTRY LANDSCAPE - French School - Italian Oil on Canvas Painting
By Emilio Pergola
Located in Napoli, IT
Country landscape - Emilio Pergola Italia 2006 - Oil on canvas cm.50x130 Pergola's works reveal the touch of antiquity that recalls the past where shapes and colors are happily combined. A well-harmonized painting that draws inspiration from the paintings of the French master Leon Augustin Lhermitte. Lhermitte preferred to portray rural scenes and the peasants at work, so much so that he was called "the painter of the reapers". In this beautiful oil on canvas we admire some scenes of life in the fields, some women work while others prepare their lunch. In each painting, Pergola observes the world with deep care, outlining the most important values, the essence and the cosmic symbolism of nature. Pergola's creative technique is a touch of art, its rural landscapes, cottages, its beloved animals, such as horses and cows...

"Moonlit River Scene", Early 20th Century Oil on Canvas by Luis Graner y Arrufi
By Luis Graner Y Arrufi
Located in Madrid, ES
LUIS GRANER Y ARRUFI Spanish, 1863 - 1929 MOONLIT RIVER SCENE signed and dated "L. Graner, 1925" (lower right) Oil on canvas 20-1/8 X 30 inches (51X 76 cm.) framed: 25-3/4 X 35-3/4 inches (65 X 90.5 cm.) PROVENANCE NEAL AUCTION COMPANY, New Orleans, LA, USA Private Collection, Barcelona Graner paints this work, Moonlit on the river, during his stay in the United States in the last stage of his artistic life, from 1910 to 1928, in full stage of maturity. This artwork reflects the constant search of the artist for the effects of light in his work. This persistent concern for light remains throughout his artistic life, which he learned in his Parisian stage under the influence of the painter Frances Platour. The silver light of the moon and the small lights at distance, which are tiny foci of artificial light, reflecting the river water, forming a chromatic range of greens, ocher and pearly that give a certain mystery to the composition, creating a modern approach to the landscape, by placing the two large trees at the edge of the river in the foreground Luís Graner y Arrufí, Spanish (1863–1929) was a Catalan painter in the Realistic style. He was born in Barcelona, and studied at the Escola de la Llotja from 1883, with Antoni Caba (color/composition) and Benet Mercadé (drawing). During his final year at school, he received a grant to study in Madrid, where he copied and learned from the Old Masters at the Museo del Prado. After that, supported by a fellowship, he moved to Paris and became a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. Later, he returned to Barcelona, but continued to travel to cities throughout Europe, including Berlin, Munich and Düsseldorf. Influenced by Richard Wagner's concept of "Gesamtkunstwerk" (Total Work of Art), he was motivated to create his own total art experience and organized the "Sala Mercè" (Mercy Hall) in Barcelona's Rambla District. The project involved contributors from every artistic discipline, including the new field of cinematography. The room was decorated by Antoni Gaudí. Other participants included Adrià Gual, Santiago Rusiñol, Ramon Casas...

Pink Sunset on River Winter Village Landscape early 20th century Oil Painting
Located in Stockholm, SE
Signed lower right "J. Purvit", presumably by Latvian artist Vilhelms Purvitis (1872 - 1945), but we do not claim. The tranquil, unfrozen river flowing on the outskirts of the village, situated on a hill in a picturesque location, whimsically reflects the houses and trees along the shore, adding an extra charm to the scene. The autumn leaves, not yet completely fallen, show bright colors peeking out from under a light blanket of snow covering the trees. In the distance, the mountain ranges add depth and dimension to the scene, while the green trees against the changing backdrop highlight the smooth transition of seasons. The winter sky with its cold hues and the fiery sunset casting beautiful pink shades across the all scene set the mood and create a captivating atmosphere. This painting once again reminds us of the beauty of nature that surrounds us... if only we find the time to pause and appreciate it. Antique oil painting on canvas, signed, unframed. Size app.: 50 x 69.5 cm (roughly 19.7 x 27.4 in). Overall in very good ready to hang condition with just minimal wear. Please study good resolution images for cosmetic condition. In person actual painting may appear darker or brighter than in our pictures, strictly depending on sufficient light in your environment. Weight of app. 2 kg is going to measure 4 kg packed for shipment. Vilhelms Purvitis, landscape painter and educator who founded the Latvian Academy of Art and was its rector from 1919 to 1934. French coast- 21st Century Contemporary Landscape Painting by Rutger Hiemstra
By Rutger Hiemstra
Located in Nuenen, Noord Brabant
In his studio, with large skylights, Rutger Hiemstra works on various subjects: still-lifes, portraits and, for example, large cloudy skies. In addition, he can also be found outside regularly, to make small 'plein-air' paintings. A few hours of sitting outside and painting a beautiful painting about it, that 'can not be better', according to Hiemstra. Rutger worked in Denmark, Switzerland, France and England, he also likes working in his own environment and is easily inspired by simple and daily 'things'. His self-tanned garden fence is also a wonderful subject. Inspiration enough, but time too short to draw and paint all the subjects that pass by. During our introduction to these artist, at the begin of 2017, it became clear how driven Rutger is. His own compiled book of artists that inspires him and of which he carefully studies the work is always within reach in his studio. When leaving, Rutger shows how he builds up his still lifes. A self-molded table top with potatoes 'scattered' on it. This is a while, downstairs in the living room, and here and there things change. Finally, if the composition really suits him, he will paint it. In his paintings, Rutger shows us how surprising his still-lifes, small, intimate or colorful and of great size can be. The material expression and atmosphere in the work of this artist is particularly well-suited in all formats. In January 2018 we had a big exhibition with his works, Dutch newspaper 'NRC' wrote an article about his works with the title: Anti-Depressive medication in paint by Rutger Hiemstra, we totally agree. The works of Rutger make you smile! The article in het NRC: Hiemstra's still life are antidepressants in paint Gallery Bonnard, Nuenen Rutger Hiemstra paints easter eggs, tompoucen or fresh mint in such a way that you think: but of course deserve a painting! For a child, Easter eggs are sensational. To begin with, they are bigger, if you are smaller. They have a nice shape: just not round. They shine and come in festive colors. And if you wipe off the wrapper there is no real egg, but chocolate. Later you are grown up and you know those things by now. Every year around Easter they are for sale with containers. They lie in front of the house and office. Easter egg? Yes Nice. But nothing special. Until you see them painted by Rutger Hiemstra (1975). He looks childishly at all those colorful glittering unround marbles - and he knows how to share his elation with it in a still life. Hiemstra makes Easter eggs unusual again, just as he also shows tompoucing, a glass of white wine or fresh mint, a pink cake...

Animal scene Duck hunting with dogs 18th century Swedish Master by Philip Korn
Located in Stockholm, SE
Monogrammed lower left: Johan Philip Korn (1728 - 1796), was a Swedish painter. A beautiful landscape, with a backwater in which carefree ducks swim, hunters and their dogs in passion, in the background you can see a city with a bell tower. Old masters have been depicting animals in their paintings since the Renaissance. In those days, hunting scenes were popular - there is always a share of emotional participation in them. Here it is necessary to understand that in previous centuries people looked at hunting as a means of obtaining food, therefore naturalism dominates in the painting of the old masters.
