English Ironstone Imari Platter
Located in Pasadena, CA
This is an exceptionally large English mid-19th century Victorian Ironstone Platter decorated in a beautifully detailed Japanese Imari pattern. The enameling is sharp with deep coloration and the overlaid gold is in very good original condition. The platter is marked "Stone China" on the reverse. The platter is in very good overall condition with normal patination and very minimal losses to the painted decoration. There is a bit of wear to the underside of the rim which does not detract from the value of the platter. Platers of this size are very uncommon and desirable. This piece could be installed as a work of art or even fitted with a custom table base...

Modern Japanese Studio Pottery Oribe Moon Flask Vase by Ken Matsuzaki
By Ken Matsuzaki
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary studio ceramic vase made by Japanese potter Ken Matsuzaki (1950-). The vase showcases distinguished "moon flask" form with shoulder loops. The moon flask form was widely recorded first in Tang Dynasty China, most likely arrived from the Mideast countries via the silk road. It was originally used as drink vessel for the nomads and the loops were used to tie it to the horse-centered owner. The exotic form persisted in Chinese ceramic production through Ming to Qing dynasty. The form is unusual in Ken Matsuzaki's work. The artist covered the vase with a thick dripping Oribe green glaze partially revealing the unglazed part of the body, which is decorated with scrolling pattern in left by ash glaze. The work is rooted in both Yohen Shino glaze technique and Oribe tradition, but interestingly it also paid homage to Sancai pottery in Tang Dynasty when green glaze was prominently used to drip and splash onto the pottery. Viewing the vase, one can see in this harmonious piece, the innovative reinterpretation of ancient aesthetics that cross the cultures, geology and time. The base is marked with the artist's signature. The vase comes with an inscribed tomobako storage box with the artist's bio and wrapping cloth with seal. The vase measures 8.6"h x 7"w x 2"d.
Ken Matsuzaki’s haptic ceramics bring a contemporary approach to traditional Japanese ceramicware, most notably 16th-century Oribe pottery...

Early Porcelain Underglaze Dragon Ewer by Makuzu Kozan Meiji Period
By Makuzu Kozan
Located in Atlanta, GA
A porcelain ewer with fine underglaze iron red, brown and blue decoration made by the legendary Japanese imperial potter Makuzu Kozan (1842-1916), this relatively rare piece is dated to circa Meiji 23rd to 26th year (1890-1893) based on the mark used on the base. This is the starting period when the artists departed from his high-relief and gold gilt period and started focusing on making porcelain pieces with underglaze paint and experimented new colors. The ewer form is also relatively rare in the artist's survived repertoire compared to other forms.
The piece takes its shape from the prototype Chinese...

Fine Trumpet Satsuma Vase by Taizan Yohei
Located in Atlanta, GA

The main motif and the focal point of the vase is the continuous panel that circumvents the entire mid-body, apparently a rendition of the Boy's Festival, known as "Tango no Sekku" in Japanese. The traditional festival is celebrated on May 5th of each year. Originated in Nara Period...

Shoji Hamada Tenmoku Glaze & Kaki Trailing Vase with Original Signed Sealed Box
By Shoji Hamada
Located in Studio City, CA
An exquisite, beautifully crafted Japanese pottery vase by master potter Shoji Hamada featuring Hamada's famous signature tenmoku glaze with kaki trailing. The original Hamada signed and sealed wood storage box is included as well as the written appraised signature of his son Shinsaku Hamada. The vase also comes with a printed artist profile/sales brochure of Hamada (featuring some of his other presumably available work). It appears this piece was offered at the Keio Department store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. At first glance, this may seem odd but in fact, this is quite an honor in Japan. This store is known for selling and exhibiting such high-profile artists and potters as Bernard Leach, Lucie Rie, Gyokudo Kawai, Shiko Munakata, Kawai Kanjiro, and Rosanjin Kitaoji. A major goal of many ceramic artists in Japan is to have a one-man exhibition in a department store. For many Westerners, this is a strange concept. Some of the larger department stores have up to three or four dedicated galleries showing concurrent art exhibitions. A well-known artist's exhibition can bring in hundreds, often thousands, of customers to a store and increase revenue for other sales in the millions-of-yen range. These exhibits are usually longer running and highlight a potter's career, like a Living National...

Japanese Glazed Tsubo Wine Jar, c. 1875
Located in Chicago, IL
This large, glazed stoneware vessel is a Meiji-era Japanese storage jar (tsubo) used for storing rice wine, water or even tea leaves and spices. Sometimes referred to as a Martaban jar due to historic trade routes, this style of unrefined, ovoid jar was common throughout East Asia as everyday containers for liquids and foodstuffs. The large vessel is sculpted to a tapered form with broad shoulders, a narrow base, and a constrained neck flanked by two small loop handles. The interior and shoulders are drenched in a thin, iron-rich glaze that imparts a glassy, dark brown finish and drips down the unglazed sides with irregular movement. Beautifully imperfect, the jar's textured finish and subtle asymmetry honors the spirit of wabi-sabi and recalls primitive medieval Japanese...
