Chinese Ochre Brown Glazed Martaban Jar, Ming Dynasty, 15th-16th Century

About the Item

A fine and large Chinese brown ochre glazed stoneware storage jar, commonly known as a Martaban or Martavan jar, Ming dynasty, 15th-16th century. The elegant ovoid jar with a slender body rising up from a narrow foot and terminating in a short neck and everted mouth. The broad shoulder decorated with a pair of undulating dragons molded in low relief, with incised clouds or waves below and a series of lug handles above. The jar glazed in a beautiful and complex ochre bordering on olive, with areas of mottling and streaking. The glaze stopping about six inches from the foot, with the unglazed area covered with an attractive brown slip.
