Korean White Glazed Jar, Joseon Dynasty, 18th Century, Korea

About the Item

A sublime Korean white glazed porcelain globular jar, Joseon Dynasty, 18th century, Korea. The squat jar is heavily potted, with a globular body, very short neck, and wide mouth rim, all resting on a recessed ring foot. The jar glazed all over in a subtle grayish white glaze. This jar has character. From the heaviness of the porcelain, to the subtle coloration and shading of the glaze, the potter has expressed themselves beautifully, even leaving the wonderful uneven, sweeping indentations of the seam to the body. The firing cracks, kiln adhesions, and glaze imperfections all add to the simple and unobtrusive beauty of this jar. The jar was formed as two hemispherical bowls, and joined together, a technique usually used for moon jars, which this jar may technically by classified as. The slightly uneven seam has been highlighted, rather than covered up. Interestingly, the top of the mouth has been intentionally left unglazed. The underside with an old collection sticker.
