Chinese Tang Dynasty Splash and Drip Glazed Ovoid Jar, circa 8th Century
About the Item
A quiet and surprisingly contemporary looking Tang Dynasty (618 to 906 AD) ovoid jar with an abstract drip glaze, China, circa 8th century.
The tall, slender vase of elegant proportions, with a voluptuous body tapering upwards from a flat foot and low waist, to a narrow shoulder, short neck and and lipped mouth. The top half of the body covered with a pale slip and finished beautifully with an understated brown drip glaze. The lower half unglazed, revealing the buff gray pottery body.
Circular shadows of another splash glaze also appear on the body, indicating this piece may have originally been a sancai glazed piece, where the glaze either did not take, or was degraded from burial.
