Portrait of a Boy in White Shirt - Scottish 1920's Art Deco male oil painting

This superb Art Deco portrait oil painting is by noted Scottish artist Cowan Dobson. Painted in 1923 it is a really light and bright portrait of a young boy. The light catching his white shirt and face illuminate him beautifully as his blue eyes gaze at the artist/viewer. The brushwork, for example on his hair and shirt are superb. This stunning portrait is finished off in a gorgeous original frame. A excellent example of Cowan Dobson's work.

Condition. Oil on canvas, unframed size is20 inches by 16 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed behind glass in a beautiful ornate gilt frame. Framed size is 28 inches by 24 inches and in good condition.
David Cowan Dobson (1894–1980), referred to as 'Cowan' Dobson ARBA (1919), RBA (1922), was a leading Scottish portrait artist of his day. Dobson was born in Bradford, Yorkshire, the second son of the Scottish portrait painter Henry John Dobson (1858–1928).Dobson started his career in Scotland. He was educated at George Watson's College in Edinburgh and studied art in Edinburgh, London and Paris. In 1918 he was using his father's studio at Dalry. Around 1920 he moved to London and from then on he worked and resided mainly in London. Occasionally, he would work in and around Glasgow. He is said to have rented Kenmure Castle, in New Galloway, Kirkcudbrightshire, in the 1930s and 1940s to entertain and paint fashionable sitters. Dobson mainly worked in oils but also painted some fine water-colour scenes. He painted in the tradition of the academic nineteenth century with mostly a rather darker colour scheme, while his brother Henry, influenced by the Modernist movement in Edinburgh, painted more colourful portraits. Although he painted some fine portraits of well known men, like Earl Attlee, Earl Beatty and Harold Wilson, Dobson also portrayed "fashionable London ladies". Dobson was married to Phyllis Bowyer, who was the brains behind his financial success. She made Dobson one of London's leading society portrait painters. She herself sat for the photographer Alexander Bassano, the resulting portrait now being at the National Portrait Gallery, London. During World War I, Dobson was commissioned by the Royal Air Force section of the Imperial War Museum to paint portraits of three recipients of the Victoria Cross. Dobson painted portraits of Lt. Col. L.W. Brabazon Rees, Sgt Mottershead and Flight Lt. A.W. Beauchamps-Proctor. Dobson first exhibited at Royal Academy when aged only nineteen and began showing at the Royal Scottish Academy four years later. Dobson's works were also exhibited at the Royal Society of Arts, Royal Society of Water-colourers, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy, Fine Art Society and at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool. Jeannie Netter was an American born musician and song-writer but was mostly merited for her sculpture having been taught by the Russian artist Bernstamm.
Fedor Encke was born in Berlin, Germany in 1851. Younger brother of Erdmann Encke who was a sculptor, Encke was the illegitimate grandson of King Frederick Wilhelm II of Prussia and Mistress Wilhelmine Encke, Countess of Lichtenau.
Fedor studied under Karl Gussow in Berlin and then went on to study in Rome and Paris.
Although he set up a studio in Berlin during the 1880’s, he seems to have travelled regularly between Paris and New York painting many American Society sitters, including President Theodore Roosevelt.
Encke’s portrait of Roosevelt dressed in Rough Rider uniform, originally hung in the dining room of the White House and is now at the Presidents place of birth, Segamore Hill, New York. This portrait was also published as the frontispiece of ‘The Rough Riders’ by C. Scribners&Sons, 1899.
Encke was in Paris in 1902 and painted the two banking giants, John H. Harjes and J.P. Morgan both having their portraits painted at the same time.
To try and finish Morgan’s painting Encke hired a young photographer named Edward Steichen to take Morgan’s picture as a kind of aid memoir to minimize the sitting time. This photograph and the painting that resulted from it caused a considerable stir because of the uncompromising pose of Morgan. The portrait became synonymous with the new capitalism.
Encke seems to have been very well connected socially and painted for many members of the European nobility as a result. Encke died in 1926.

This absolutely lovely British Victorian oil painting is by noted Birmingham born artist James John Hill and has some excellent provenance below. The painting actually stayed in Birmingham for many years, hanging in Heathfield Hall, the former residence of inventor and engineer James Watt, but owned at that time by Thomas Pemberton. It then moved to Berwick House in Shropshire. Entitled The Gleaner and painted in1863, it is a charming half length portrait of a young woman with a sheaf of wheat under her arm. She is stood beneath trees and the wheat field is beyond. She is dressed in a lovely pink garment and wearing a brown felt hat, to shade her face from the sun, her dark hair cascading down her shoulder, The hat is decorated with a poppy. The soft tones and sympathetic rendering of the young woman make this a stunning 19th century oil painting with excellent provenance.
The painting is housed in its original gilt frame with a beautiful oak leaf motif.
Signed and dated 1863 lower left.
Provenance. Thomas Pemberton, Heathfield Hall, Handsworth, Birmingham.
(Heathfield Hall was the former residence of the inventor and engineer James Watt. Following his death the house had several occupiers including local luminaries Thomas Pemberton and George Tangye).

American artist Henry R Rittenberg painted this lovely 1920's Art Deco portrait oil painting. The painting is a standing half length portrait of a lady in a black coat with a white fur collar over a red dress and long beads. Henry R Rittenberg (1879-1969) was born in Libau, Latvia and later immigrated to the United States. He studied art at the Bavarian Academy in Germany, and by 1906, was in Philadelphia, where he attended the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art. Race Horse Phoenix with Guilermo Kemmis - British 19th century art oil painting

This superb British 19th century equine oil painting is by noted horse lover, George Gascoyne. Painted in 1889, this French born chestnut horse is Phoenix. While he was essentially a miler, Phoenix (sometimes seen spelled as “Phenix”) came from a family that had produced Classic winners in France at up to 15 furlongs. He proved an excellent sire following his export to Argentina, becoming the foundation stallion for Guillermo Kemmis' breeding program at Haras Las Rosas. This painting is from his time in Argentina with Kemmis. Phoenix is depicted in a flat landscape against a vivid blue sky. A gentleman, possibly his owner, Guillermo Kemmis, stands smiling in front of him holding his reigns and gives perspective to how tall Phoenix is. Although in profile, Phoenix is turning to look at the viewer, his chestnut coat gleaming and his anatomy perfectly portrayed. This is a superb Victorian equine portrait of a noted horse in the 19th century and is a lovely example of Gascoyne's work as a horse lover.
Signed with initials and dated GG 1889 lower right.
Provenance. Inscribed "Phenix" (Cymbal -- Belle-Etoile) by George Gascoyne, Sittingbourne, Kent to reverse.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 36 inches by 28 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a wooden frame, 44 inches by 36 inches and in good condition.

This striking British Edwardian oval portrait oil painting is by noted artist Maurice Greiffenhagen. Painted circa 1901 the sitter is Mrs Bury Barry from a landed gentry family. It is a half length portrait which combines Greiffenhagen's skill as a portraitist and his tendencies towards theatricality and romance, in part effectively conveyed by the dramatic lighting, which highlights the sitter's skin revealed by the low neckline of her dress, and the rose which she holds to her chest and which matches the red of her blushing cheeks. The brushwork, detail and colouring are superb. This is a lovely British Edwardian portrait and an excellent example of Greiffenhagen's work.

Maurice William Greiffenhagen, RA, British (1862-1931). Greiffenhagen worked as a painter, illustrator and graphic designer and taught at the Glasgow School of Art from 1906 to 1926. His output was widely varied, ranging from stylised graphic work, to more formal, restrained portraits, and to his somewhat fantastical mythical and allegorical scenes.
