Minimalist Daybed by Jorge Zalszupin, Brazil, 1960s
By Jorge Zalszupin
Located in Antwerp, BE
This exceptional daybed from the 1960s, designed by renowned Polish-Brazilian architect and designer Jorge Zalszupin, is a testament to mid-century modern elegance. One of only two ever produced, this rare piece was crafted in 1963 as a personal gift for Zalszupin's sister, Ina Zalszupin, making it not just a striking design object but also a unique historical artifact. Crafted with a minimalist approach, it boasts a warm wooden frame with an inviting patina, supporting a high-quality off-white mattress. Jorge Zalszupin (1922 - 2020) was a prominent figure in modern design, known for his architectural and artistic contributions. Born in Poland and later relocating to Brazil, he played a crucial role in the Brazilian modernist movement. Zalszupin co-founded L'Atelier, a renowned furniture design manufacturer, and collaborated with renowned architect Oscar Niemeyer to create furniture for Brazil's capital, Brasília. His mastery of materials like plywood and chromed metal resulted in sensually elegant pieces, making L'Atelier a significant player in the Brazilian furniture industry and leaving a lasting legacy in the world of design. This daybed is one of only two ever produced by Jorge Zalszupin as a personal gift for his sister, Ina Zalszupin. Its exceptional rarity and authenticity are documented by a signed statement from Roberto Halfin, son of Ina Zalszupin, confirming that the two daybeds...

Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo Daybed in Walnut
By Osvaldo Borsani, Arredamenti Borsani
Located in Waalwijk, NL
Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo, daybed, model 5767, walnut, fabric, Italy, 1941 This exceedingly rare sofa or daybed, designed by Osvaldo Borsani for Arredamenti Borsani Varedo in 1941, was originally intended for Casa Albonetto in Italy. The designer himself owned a smaller version of this type. This modest daybed serves as a prime example of Borsani's impeccable innovative thinking and his keen sense of harmonious compositions. When it comes to practicality, its defining feature are the adjustable armrests, simultaneously placing the backrest cushions over the lowered armrests. In an easy gesture the sofa is transformed into a daybed. A generous storage compartment is present by raising the seating space upwards. The overall wooden frame in walnut is characterized by rounded contours and clear lines with evenly spaced spindles structuring the piece. Osvaldo Borsani (1911-1985) was an Italian designer and architect, raised by a family of fine furniture makers in Varedo. At the age of 16, he joined his father’s furniture shop, the Atelier di Varedo, which was fully engaged in designing and furnishing homes inspired by the Italian Art Deco movement. The designer of the atelier was the Italian architect Gino Maggioni (1898-1955) who was known for his Viennese Jugendstil orientation of the early 20th century. In the 1930s, he graduated from the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera and Politecnico di Milano, where he studied Fine Arts and Architecture respectively. In 1932, the family company was renamed ‘Arredamenti Borsani’ and opened its first studio in Milan. During this period, he encountered Avant-Garde artists of various artistic disciplines like Lucio Fontana (1899-1968), Agenore Fabbri (1911-1998), Aligi Sassu (1912-2000), Roberto Crippa (1921-1972), Fausto Melotti (1901-1986), Arnaldo Pomodoro (1926-) and Giò Pomodoro (1930-2002). These collaborations resulted in the creation of furniture and interior design projects with a high-level of craftsmanship and artistry. In 1953, Borsani founded together with his twin brother Fulgenzio Borsani ‘Tecno’, a design and manufacturing company that produced items based on mechanical innovations and refined technicality. The ‘P40’ adjustable lounge chair (1953) has become the ideological manifesto of Borsani's Tecno program, and still remains the best known, exemplary piece in the Tecno catalogue. Other iconic works that were produced by Tecno were created by Gio Ponti (1891-1979), Vico cham...

De Sede DS 80 Daybed in Teak Upholstery by De Sede Design Team
By De Sede
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Feet up and just unwind - our DS-80 relocates sleep to the daytime hours, the time when we are supposed to be active and getting things done. Its subtle appearance reminds us to take a relaxing break from our hectic everyday lives once in a while – and that’s certainly nothing to be ashamed of. The modest dimensions of the daybed are a benefit here, as they gently force you to spend some time on your own. Part of the basic furnishings of any upscale interior in the 1920s, the flat daybed has been enjoying a Renaissance for several years now. Our daybed caused a stir more than 30 years ago, with its elaborate patchwork processing and freely placeable back cushions. This timeless Classic has now been gently updated. It is available both as a daybed and as a small lounge sofa, too. The daybed doubles as a lounge sofa the daybed DS-80 has established itself as a timeless Classic by De Sede ever since it was launched in 1969: to this day, the model is a paradigm of highclass leather manufacture and popular all-over the world. To be honest, we’re not quite sure which we like better: the newly produced models or the 50-year-old sculptures...
