Bookcase by Børge Mogensen for C. M. Madsen, Denmark, 1950s
By C.M. Madsen, Børge Mogensen
Located in Utrecht, NL
This impressive bookcase designed by Børge Mogensen reflects the Danish designer’s aesthetic that was clean and highly functional, creating pieces that stand out despite their restrained design. The bookcase is made with a beautiful woodgrain that is visible throughout the bodies. The bookcase ' tops, flanks, fronts and shelves are constructed of solid wood. The shelves are all easily adjustable and removable. The bookcase features five adjustable shelves, a feature of functionality. The shelves can be arranged in multiple ways to accommodate books or other objects of various sizes, and thanks to the open front, this bookcases is perfect to showcase any item. The bookcase stands sturdily on the distinctively sculpted, black lacquered wooden legs. The subtle geometry of the base and the color blocking legs add modernism to the design while also balancing out the heaviness of the body. Børge Mogensen’s present design for C. M. Madsen Cabinetmakers Denmark was manufactured by the Danish company, FDB Møbler. The bookcase is stamped with the cabinetmaker's mark and production number on the back. Condition: Good, in good vintage condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Both items have some discoloration and a later made (cable) hole that has been restored by a piece of colored plywood. Dimensions: 48.03 in W x 10.23 in D x 62.59 in H 122 cm W x 26 cm D x 159 cm H About the Designer: Børge Mogensen is without a doubt one of the most famous Danish designers. Born in 1914 in Aalborg, Mogensen was trained as a cabinet maker and studied at the Danish School of Arts and Crafts in Copenhagen from 1936 to 1938, and architecture at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts’ School of Architecture between 1938 and 1942. At the beginning of his career, he became head of F.D.B. Mobler’s furniture design studio. In 1950 he started his own design studio, collaborating with manufacturers Soborg, the Swedish company Karl Andersson and the famous manufacturer Fredericia from 1955. The collaboration with the latter resulted in many of Mogensen’s most famous furniture pieces, including the “Spanish Chair” and the “Ambassador Sofa...

Aluminum Rational Jigsaw Shelf by Studio Julien Manaira
Located in Geneve, CH
Aluminum rational jigsaw shelf by Studio Julien Manaira Dimensions: 72.5 x 25 x 140 cm Materials: brushed and waxed aluminum The intention behind this project is to highlight the traces from the actions of the maker. In this sense, the choice of the jigsaw is deliberate and allows a strong physical relation between maker and material, that will remain tangible in the final object. Each of these cuts is unique and have their own character emanating from what happened on the very moment of the making. They stand out from the regular and smooth cuts realized digitally in a factory. Digital and manual inputs have equal importance in the objects. They communicate their differences in order to create a strong dynamic between the two methodologies of work. Without suggesting which is better, they create their own narrative and are the reflection of two temporalities: the digital work is continuous when the manual work is the track of a particular moment. The created objects intend to be the presentation of these approaches of the material. The dynamic and anarchic way of cutting by hand respond to the linear and supervised vision of the computer-cut elements. The pieces intend to be functional objects carrying the narrated discussion between the controlled and uncontrolled treatments of the material. Julien Manaira (France,1992) successively studied industrial design (La martinière, Lyon) and fine arts -option product design (Esad, Reims). in 2015 he came to Amsterdam to follow a temporary master program (Materialisation in Art and Design) at the Sandberg Institute where he graduated in 2017 before opening his studio in the same city. His graduation project ‘The once liquid plastic’ was awarded by the RADO Star Prize 2017 and the 3rd prize of the Pure Talent Contest at IMM Cologne 2018. In the last years, he exhibited his works in different established and recognized organizations such as Paris Design Week, IMM Cologne, Design Parade Hyères, and Milan Design Week. He was commissioned by different companies, among which Nilufar Gallery, Nubikk, Van Dijk Store as well as private clients. The main focus in his practice is setting processes that allow the manufacturer or him to be mentally and physically involved in the transformation of material towards an object. He believes that this empowerment is a way to engage deeper the audience or user’s perception, and therefore create a stronger connection with the object. Serendipity, combining industrial and artisanal material, are examples of how he aims to create objects that are able to communicate their undergone transformations. ©Iris Box...

18th Century Queen Anne Burr Walnut Double Dome Bureau Bookcase
Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
A Fine and Rare Three-Part George I Burr Walnut Bureau Bookcase Circa 1720-1730 – England Attributed to Coxed and Woster (1700-1735) This exceptional George I burr walnut bureau bookcase represents the finest English craftsmanship of the early 18th century, attributed to the renowned cabinetmaking partnership of Coxed and Woster. Meticulously constructed in three sections, the chest, bureau, and bookcase, it reflects both practicality and elegance, showcasing premium burr veneers and outstanding period details. Surmounted by a refined cavetto moulded cornice, the bookcase features a pair of inset moulded and shaped mirrored doors, enhancing its grandeur and light-reflecting elegance. The doors reveal double D-moulded shelves, fitted for functional and decorative display. At the base of each mirrored door, retractable candle slides provide both practicality and historical charm. The fall-front bureau is adorned with a cross-grain ogee-moulded bookrest, supported by retractable lopers. It includes two short oak-lined, feather-banded drawers fitted with their original gilt-brass ring-pull handles, oval escutcheons, and locks. When opened, the fall reveals what appears to be the original inset leather writing surface, accompanied by a beautifully arranged interior of pigeonholes and a series of small and long feather-banded drawers with original knobs. A central feather-banded cupboard, flanked by Tuscan columns, conceals three hidden drawers, exemplifying both craftsmanship and ingenuity. The chest, with its ovolo waist moulding, is raised on sturdy ball and bracket feet, providing balance and visual strength. It features three graduating oak-lined, feather-banded drawers, retaining their original gilt-brass handles, escutcheons, and locks. Provenance: The attribution to Coxed and Woster is supported by the piece’s impeccable quality and stylistic hallmarks. The partnership, active between 1700 and 1735, operated from the White Swan at St. Paul’s Churchyard in London. Known for producing luxurious walnut and burr maple veneered...
