Professional restorations to verso, ready to hang. Dimensions approx (unframed) 20" x 24" or 50.8cm x 61cm. ABOUT THE ARTIST: Eugène Henri Cauchois was a pupil of Cabanel and Duboc. He exhibited at the Paris Salon as of 1874. Cauchois was a member of the Société du Salon des Artistes Français from 1890 onwards and was awarded bronze medals in 1898 and 1900, and a silver medal in 1904. He used a number of pseudonyms including F De Montaland, E Soyer, C Mary, Vermont and D Valmon. Towards the end of his life, Cauchois directed his efforts towards decorative compositions, producing among other things panels decorated with seasonal flowers for a school in the seventh arrondissement in Paris. His compositional style is characterised by vigorously applied and densely coloured brushstrokes. Guido Borgianni was born in New York on June 11, 1915, to Florentine Roberto Borgianni, a leather merchant, and Sara Herreshoff, who belonged to one of the wealthiest families in the United States and became a legend in the construction of the racing boats that also participated in and won the America's Cup. Guido was not even a year old when, once his parents' marriage had foundered, his father brought him back to Florence. Of Guido Borgianni's extraordinary gifts as a draftsman and painter, Galileo Chini, his neighbor, noticed, and he worked to see that talent refined. Thus Borgianni attended the Academy of Fine Arts under Felice Carena, a strict teacher but one who knew how to appreciate the qualities of his pupils. In the first part of his life he signed his works in black. Then, when he became a pointillist, he began to use red. Among his great admirers were Alessandro Parronchi and Oskar Kokoschka, who was captivated by Borgianni's paintings during his Florentine stay in 1949. Soffici, Saetti, Malaparte, Montale, Pratolini, and Cesare Zavattini, the screenwriter of Vittorio De Sica and Italian neorealism, all liked him very much, finding him "as beautiful as a Corot." In 1946 he exhibited at the Quadriennale in Rome. After his marriage to Simonetta Avila in 1954, his activities were enlivened by travel: in 1955 to Venice, in 1957 to Paris, from 1958 to 1962 around Italy, in 1964 to Spain, in 1971 to New York and Barbados Islands. In 1950 he was awarded a prize at the Mostra Nazionale del Fiorino in Florence, and in 1956 he was appointed Academician of the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno in Florence. In 1957 he was awarded First Prize at the Portrait Exhibition at Dante's House in Florence. Upon his death, deep condolences were expressed by the president of the Florence City...

Beautiful and vivid painting, oil paint on panel. The painting shows a picturesque harbor on the French Mediterranean. This work is by the Flemish painter Charles-Louis Bisschops (Liège, April 25, 1894 - Rossignol, 1975). The painting has a somewhat impressionistic touch and a beautiful use of color. The blue color of the water contrasts nicely with the shady buildings. The painting is framed in a classic wooden gilded frame. On the back of the painting is an old label stating that the painting was painted in the French port of Ferrier (near Marseille on the Mediterranean). The painting is clearly signed and dated 1937. Charles Bisschops has his own Wikipedia page, information about this: Charles Bisschops was a Belgian painter, graphic artist and draftsman. He was a student at the Academy of Brussels from 1912 to 1919. The main professors were Jean Delville and Constant Montald.

In a final burst of bitter anger, he invokes the devil. The devil appears in the guise of Mephistopheles and offers him a pact: he will grant him what he desires most in the world in exchange for his servitude. Faust asks him for youth and his help in seducing Marguerite. When he achieves his goal, bound by his contract with the devil, Faust abandons the latter who is waiting for her child. Filled with remorse, he returns to her, but kills Valentin, Marguerite's brother who tries to stop him, during a duel. He then tries to save the life of Marguerite who is imprisoned for infanticide, but he fails. Like this multifaceted character, the vocal treat-ment chosen by Gounod is differentiated: sometimes very lyrical with touching flights, sometimes very cold and repetitive to evoke her detachment from the world of men. Marguerite is young and naive. She lets herself be seduced by the charming and mysterious character of Faust and thus causes her own downfall as well as that of her family (her brother and her child will die).
