Son cadre troubadour en papier mâché, rare et datant de circa 1840, confère à l'œuvre une aura historique et une mise en valeur singulière, dans l'esprit des cabinets de curiosités qu'affectionnait l'artiste. Biographie d'Eugène Berman (1899-1972) : Né le 4 novembre 1899 à Saint-Pétersbourg, Eugène Berman est un peintre et décorateur de théâtre d’origine russe, naturalisé américain. Il est le frère de Léonide Berman. Son éducation artistique débute en Europe occidentale, avec des formations en Allemagne, Suisse et France, où il suit les cours de Pavel Naumov et Sergey Gruzenberg entre 1914 et 1918. Après avoir quitté la Russie en 1918, il étudie à l'Académie Ranson à Paris, sous la direction de Maurice Denis et Édouard Vuillard. Inspiré par Giorgio de Chirico et Picasso, il expose ses œuvres (portraits et paysages) aux Salons d’Automne et des Tuileries entre 1923 et 1927. Il promeut, aux côtés de son frère, une forme de peinture poétique et symboliste. En 1935, il émigre aux États-Unis, où il travaille comme décorateur de théâtre tout en poursuivant son œuvre picturale. Il devient citoyen américain en 1937. Il meurt le 14 décembre 1972, à Rome ou New York. Mobilier italien et latino-américain du XVIe et XVIIe siècles. Œuvres d’amis artistes, dont Mirko, Ernst, Cagli, Cremoni. Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico and Picasso, he exhibited his works (portraits and landscapes) at the Salons d’Automne and des Tuileries between 1923 and 1927. Alongside his brother, he championed a poetic and symbolic form of painting. In 1935, he emigrated to the United States, working as a theater designer while continuing to produce allegorical works. He became an American citizen in 1937. He passed away on December 14, 1972, in Rome or New York. Domenico Carnevale (Sassuolo, 1524 - Modena, 1579) Adoration of the Shepherds Oil on copper, 42 x 28 cm Frame 54 x 36 cm Expert opinion of Prof. Emilio Negro The painting represents the Adoration of the Shepherds, the Child in the center, next to the Madonna kneeling in prayer and an angel behind her; towards him in the foreground a woman with a child in her arms, a shepherd with a sheep on the right, a bagpiper on the left and various other male and female characters turn to him. The architectures of the background, between which a glimpse of the landscape can be glimpsed, are hidden in the upper part by the clouds, where a "celestial glory" encamps with three flying angels. The painting shows mannerist characters that can be traced back to the second half of the sixteenth century, and can be traced back to an author from the Modena area, with stylistic references to the Bolognese Samacchini (1532 - 1577) and Passerotti (1529 - 1592). More precisely, it can be attributed to Domenico Carnevale (1524-1579), one of the most important masters of the sixteenth century active in the local area. Alfred Wheeler (1852-1932) Oil on Panel of the Brilliant Racehorse Pretty Polly. Signed and Dated 1906 with Jockey Danny Maher up and Trained by R Gilpin and Owner Major Eustace Loder. Alfred Wheeler was born near Bath in Somerset to John Alfred Wheeler (1821-1877), who retired early from the Army to pursue a successful painting career. Alfred is thought to have studied under his father and to have worked closely with him. He married Catherine Muspratt in 1874 and moved next door to his father at Raglan Villas, Bath. Alfred then followed his father when he moved to Hanwell. Alfred and Catherine had six children of whom Walter Herbert and John Frederick became artists. The Wheeler family specialised in sporting subjects such as horseracing and foxhunting. They also painted animal portraits. There is often confusion between Alfred Wheeler and his father because their style is so similar and they both signed J. A. Wheeler or A. Wheeler senior. They even painted some of the same racehorses and both received commissions from Baron Rothschild and the Prince of Wales. Alfred's work is thought to be less prolific. However, Alfred did contribute to many of his father's paintings toward the end of his life. Generally, Alfred's pictures tend to have more of a photographic quality about them than those of his father. Pretty Polly (March 1901 – 17 August 1931) was an Irish-bred, British-trained Thoroughbred racehorse and broodmare. One of the greatest fillies ever to race in Britain, she won fifteen consecutive races and was only the fifth horse to win the British Fillies Triple Crown since its inception in 1814. Pretty Polly also became one of the greatest broodmares of the century. Pretty Polly was bred and owned by Major Eustace Loder and trained by Peter Gilpin, she won nine races from nine starts as a two-year-old in 1903. The following year, Pretty Polly won the 1,000 Guineas as 1-4 favourite, winning easily by three lengths in record time. Other wins as a three-year-old were The Oaks, the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Nassau Stakes at Goodwood, the St. Leger Stakes (completing the Fillies' Triple Crown) and the Park Hill Stakes with jockey William Lane. Pretty Polly stayed in training as a four and five-year-old, winning six more races, including the Coronation Cup...
