Alois De Laet 1895
Located in Ljubljana, SI
Alois De Laet grew up in the Schipperskwartier in Antwerp, where his mother ran a café. De Laet was initially more interested in music. He took lessons from Peter Benoit and played the piano in his mother's café.
As a painter he was self-taught. In 1900 he was the first to exhibit at the social philosophical movement 'De Kapel'. There he met artists such as Eugeen Van Mieghem and Henry Van de Velde. De Laet called himself one of the first Antwerp socialist artists.
After the First World War he achieved success with his landscapes of the Kalmhoutse Heide and the Antwerp polders. He was a member of various art circles, including Eenigen, Als ik Kan, de Scalden, La Libre Esthétique and Vie et Lumière...

A pair of sand pictures by Benjamin Zobel after paintings by de Loutherbourg
Located in Lymington, Hampshire
These extraordinary ‘paintings’ were created using coloured grains of sand rather than paints. Each is after an original painting by Philip James de Loutherbourg. The first scene shows the Battle of Hastings with a central mounted figure, presumably William the Conqueror, with a red plume in his helmet, raising his sword against a fighter on foot. A printed version of this image, shown above, was made by William Bromley. (See the British Museum registration number 1858,1009.115 for a fine impression.) The second scene, composed with a similar central mounted knight with a raised axe (sword in the original) represents Richard the Lionheart in combat against Saladin at the Battle of Acre. In this case the print was made by Anker Smith...

"Wedding of Tethys and Peleus", Oil on Canvas, School of Madrid, Spain
Located in Madrid, ES
"Wedding of Tethys and Peleus". Oil on canvas. School of Madrid, 17th century. Corte, Juan de la (Antwerp, circa 1585 - Madrid, 1662) circle.
This work describes the weddings of the Nereid Thetis and the prince Peleo, parents of Achilles. It was celebrated on Mount Pelion, and all the deities came, although Eris, the goddess of discord, was not invited. In revenge, she threw a golden apple in which she said "for the most beautiful", that caused the dispute between Athena, Aphrodite and Hera that led to the Trial of Paris, to finally bring about the Trojan War. The banquet is depicted with a composition worked in depth, located in a rich interior of classical architecture illuminated by the light of Apollo, which is situated at the far end of the viewer. At the head of the table, in the foreground, appears Zeus, accompanied by the eagle and Hera, queen of the gods, to his left. In the lower right corner we see a group of satyrs serving the wine, accompanied by rich metal vessels worked with a detailed and descriptive brushstroke. The rest of the gods appear clearly differentiated, with Athena in the foreground to the right and, following an agile rhythm in zigzag, typically baroque, Aphrodite with Eros, Hermes and the grooms, to the left, and to the right Poseidon. Formally it is a work perfectly framed within the 17th century school of Madrid, developed around the court.
Thus, we see a sumptuous, allegorical classicist baroque, where the studies of light and color are especially relevant, revealing the exalted and luminous tone typical of this school's maturity. In particular, we can relate this painting to the circle of Juan de la Corte, painter of Flemish origin. We know nothing of his first formation today, for Palomino's assertion of his birth in Spain was documented, quoting in his testament that he was born in Antwerp. Also conserved documents in which the painter declares his apprenticeship in Flanders, where "it exerted his office by many years". For all this he has been associated with Flemish artists of the time who, due to personal knowledge or the study of his works, strongly influenced the configuration of his personal language. We know of his establishment in Spain at least since 1613. His work at the court encouraged him to ask for the place of royal painter who left vacant Bartolomé González...

Annotations de la Galerie Forni à Bologne
Bibliographie :

Bibliography:
Galerie Lucie Weill, The Neo-Romantics: Christian Bérard, Léonid and Eugène Berman, Pavel Tchelitchew, Paris, 1971.
"Paludia" is an oil on canvas created by Eugène Berman between 1967 and 1968 in Rome. Representative of his neo-romantic style, the piece exudes melancholy and poetic introspection, with a dreamlike quality reflecting his theatrical approach to composition.
The rare papier-mâché Troubadour frame, dating from circa 1840, enhances the historical aura of the work, aligning with the artist’s deep appreciation for curiosities and antiquities.
Biography of Eugène Berman (1899-1972):
Born on November 4, 1899, in Saint Petersburg, Eugène Berman was a Russian-born American painter and theater designer. He was the brother of Léonide Berman.
He received his early artistic education in Western Europe, training in Germany, Switzerland, and France, with studies under Pavel Naumov and Sergey Gruzenberg between 1914 and 1918. Leaving Russia in 1918, he studied at Académie Ranson in Paris, under the guidance of Maurice Denis and Édouard Vuillard.
Influenced by Giorgio de Chirico and Picasso, he exhibited his works (portraits and landscapes) at the Salons d’Automne and des Tuileries between 1923 and 1927. Alongside his brother, he championed a poetic and symbolic form of painting.
In 1935, he emigrated to the United States, working as a theater designer while continuing to produce allegorical works. He became an American citizen in 1937.
He passed away on December 14, 1972, in Rome or New York.
Cabinet of Curiosities and Personal Collection:
