Born: 1930, Sagua la Grande, Matanzas, Cuba.
Studies: Between 1955-1957 he studied at the Elementary School of Applied Plastic Arts attached to the Academy of Fine Arts San Alejandro, in Havana, Cuba.
Experience: Member of the Association of Cuban Recorders and teaches several drawing and engraving courses at the National School of Art Instructors. In 1965 he entered the Graphic Experimental Workshop of Havana. In 1993 he teaches a mural ceramic course at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, working in turn at the Giuseppe Mazzotti Museum House 1903 in Albissola Mare, Italy.
Exhibitions: It is included in the 1959 annual Salon, Palace of Fine Arts, Havana. He made the first personal exhibition of importance in 1967 with oil-collages and ceramics in the Havana gallery. In 1973 he placed on the mezzanine floor of the Habana Libre Hotel a mural composed of 555 pieces of ceramics started since 1971. In 1997 he presented Sosabravo, The Guardian of the Small, in the Art Gallery, Madrid, Spain. In 2001 he exhibited graphic and painting works in El Comune de Orvieto Italia, in the Sala Conca de la Laguna, Tenerife and at the Feria de la Estampa in Madrid. In Cuba, he built the 10 m2 mural called Carnaval de la Habana for the Residencial América real estate. In 2002, Galería Cernuda Arte, Coral Gables, Florida, shows his works at the Art Miami Fair. In the United Kingdom he exhibited Murano glass oil paintings and sculptures. The Biennale di Ceramica nell'Arte Contemporary of Albissola Mare, Savona, invited him to participate with works that he would carry out in the San Giorgio da Poggi workshop. Jean Carzou (Armenian: Ժան Գառզու, 1 January 1907 – 12 August 2000) was a French–Armenian artist, painter, and illustrator, whose work illustrated the novels of Ernest Hemingway and Albert Camus.
Carzou was born Karnik Zouloumian (Armenian: Գառնիկ Զուլումեան) in Aleppo, Syria to an Armenian family. Carzou later created his name from the first syllables of his name and surname, and added a Parisian nickname, "Jean". He was educated in Cairo, Egypt before moving to Paris in 1924 to study architecture. Carzou belonged to the art movement called "La Jeune Peinture" ("Young Picture") of the School of Paris, with painters like Bernard Buffet, Yves Brayer, Jansem, Jean Carzou, Louis Vuillermoz, Pierre-Henry, Daniel du Janerand, Gaston Sébire, Paul Collomb, Jean Monneret, Jean Joyet and Gaëtan de Rosnay.
He started working as a theater set decorator but quickly realized he preferred drawing and painting. In 1938, more than a hundred exhibitions of his works were organized in Paris, in the French provinces and abroad. In 1949, he received the coveted Hallmark prize. Carzou, like his contemporaries Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso was part of a generation that witnessed many wars and was deeply affected by it. Carzou made his first lithograph in 1951 and was prolific in both the lithographic and etching medium. He had solo exhibitions throughout the world and was elected to the French Academy of Fine Arts in 1977.
In 1952, he created costumes and sceneries for Les Indes Galantes of Rameau at the Opéra de Paris. He continued with Le Loup (1953) for "Les Ballets" of Roland Petit, Giselle (1954) and Athalie (1955) at the Opéra and "La Comédie française". Carzou mastered a number of mediums, though his line drawing and engraving would become well known as illustrations for some of the 20th century's most revered writers, including Hemingway, Albert Camus, Ionesco and Rimbaud. Carzou produced stunning work of painted glass and porcelain, in pencils, gauche and pastels as well as oil painting, often choosing to work on textured or irregular fabrics and papers rather than traditional canvas.
Carzou was elected a member of the Institut de France, Académie des beaux-arts, succeeding in the seat left vacant by the death of painter Jean Bouchaud in 1977. He was also awarded the National Order of Merit of France. Awards: Among the awards and recognitions that the Cuban artist received: Order for the National Culture, Cuba; Order Alejo Carpentier, Cuba; Diploma and Order of Honor from the Fuji Museum, Japan. In 1972, he received the National Prize at the International Painting Festival in Cagnes-sur-mer, France; 1976 Grand Prize, International Biennial of Wood Engraving, Banska Bystrika, Czechoslovakia and Painting Prize, Triennial of Committed Realist Art, Sofia, Bulgaria; Honor Prize, Graphic Biennial, India, as well as at the Jaime Guasch Biennial in Barcelona, Spain.
Exhibitions In summary, exhibitions of personalities. In 1983 he made the exhibition ""Retrospective (10 years of professional work)"" at the National Museum of the Palace of Fine Arts of Cuba, in 1984 at the Francoise Tournie Gallery in Paris; in 1985 he did it in the National Welfare Organization of Athens, Greece and in 1986 in the Gallery del l 'Incisione in Venice, Italy. During the eighties and nineties his work was shown in Brazil, Italy, Puerto Rico, Japan, Mexico, Spain, the United States, Cuba and Mexico.
