This is not signed or numbered. it is from a folio of prints. Laura Fiume was born in Urbino, central Italy in 1953. Her education took place in Milan at the Liceo Artistico and at the Polytechnic School of Design. In 1976 she moved to Canzo, near Como where she learned serigraphy, ceramics, and painting from the well known artist Salvatore Fiume, her father. At the beginning the main subject of her works was that of fishes. She then extended her interest to the wider world of animals, interpreted through a deliberately naïve style and very bright colours. In 1983 Laura’s works were exhibited both at the Basel Art Fair and at Artexpo in New York. The latter marked the beginning of a collaboration with the Work’s II Gallery In Southampton (NY) which would continue until 1988. Her major exhibitions of those years were in Milan at the Palazzo dell’Arengario, now home of the Museo del Novecento in Piazza Duomo, (1985), and in Venice at the Assicurazioni Generali headquarters in Piazza San Marco (1987). In 1983 Laura began her ceramic production in her father’s workshop of Canzo located in a former silk mill. Between 1990 and 1992 thanks to an exclusive agreement with a Japanese company her paintings and graphic works were distributed throughout Japan. The 1990 exhibition at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan on the theme of mirrors was the only occasion in which she exhibited her paintings with her father. Her collaboration with that gallery has been steady since 1988. In 1992, following a suggestion from the well known architect Pepe Tanzi, Laura collaborated to the launch of the Pozzi & Verga new collection of tables and chairs by including images of those pieces of furniture in her own paintings. Between 1992 and 2000 she had her own showroom in Milan where her collections of ceramics and her creations for leading companies like Ricchetti (tiles), Fede Cheti (home fabrics), Edilkamin (fireplaces and stoves), Kaigai (textiles for clothings and bathroom towels), Rosenthal (china), and Proserpio Arredamenti (furnishings and frabrics) were on display. In 1995 she was chosen as Designer of the Year by Meyer Mayor, the distinguished Swiss company specialising in kitchen and table linen production. In the 1995 exhibition entitled Walls and Terracottas at the Artesanterasmo Gallery of Milan abstract most of the subjects were painted on dirt-like materials. In the same year she also presented her new Tableaux an Terre at the L’Ile en terre Gallery of Saint Paul de Vence, France. Between 1996 and 2005 she collaborated with the Edizioni San Paolo Publishers illustrating children’s books and stories for kids in the G-baby Magazine. In 1999 she increased her show-room space by creating Atelier Produzioni d’Arte where prints, ceramics, and sculptures by various international artists were presented. In 2000 Laura began her collaboration with Raika of Japan designing their fashion collections which have been on display since 2002 in the Showroom Laura Fiume at the Mitsukoshi Department Store in Tokyo. In 2000 Laura designed a collection of coffee cups called The Jungle Collection for Cellini Deutschland. In April 2003, as part of the events that took place during the Salone del Mobile of Milan, Laura held a large exhibition at the Spazio Exté entitled Other Rooms: A Tribute To Philippe Starck. On that occasion Laura enjoyed the collaboration of Alessi, Driade, and Flos who kindly lent her the pieces from their Philippe Starck production represented in her paintings for an installation in that exhibition. In June 2003 Laura held a one-artist exhibition at the Svetog Krševana Gallery in Šibenik, Croatia as part of the International Children’s Festival of that town where she exhibited her early works dedicated to the world of children. In 2005 she gave her contribution to the restyling of the L’Arenella Hotel on the Isola del Giglio, Tuscany, by providing a number of enlarged images of her works which became the characterizing element of the hotel’s interiors. In the summer of the same year she held a retrospective at the Vartai Gallery in Vilnius, Lithuania. In 2005 she also presented an installation within the project Ten Arm-chairs for Ten Artists, an initiative by Molteni & C, a leading company in the furniture field, where Laura was asked to decorate a Molteni arm-chair from the Reversi collection and to carry out a number of paintings using the same fabrics covering their couches and arm-chairs. In 2006 there were as many as three exhibitions of Laura’s. The first one, called Visual Amplifications was held in Fiesole, near Florence, in the museum within the St. Alexander Basilica building. The second one, entitled Private Stories, took place in Sansepolcro, Tuscany at the Piero della Francesca City Museum. The third exhibition, entitled Trame d’interni (Plots in Interiors) was hosted in Milan by the Artesanterasmo Gallery where Laura presented her new paintings on fabrics provided by well known fabric producer Enzo degli Angiuoni. In 2007 she exhibited her works in Rome at the Galleria Margutta 3 and then at the trendy TAD Conceptstore showroom of Via del Babuino. Both exhibitions were strictly connected through the idea of displaying works in harmony with TAD’s furnishings. In 2007 Laura was also invited to take part in Milan’s Cow Parade...

His work is about the exploration of color and light through abstraction, with tonal gradations that infuse them with a meditative quality. During the eighties and nineties, he painted large monochromatic color field canvases with tonal gradations and soft edges that infuse them with a meditative quality and a sense of movement. When illuminated they become glowing surfaces of color and light. His artistic background and work link him closely with the first generation abstract expressionists of the New York School. Major influences include Jackson Pollock and Mark Rothko, and his mentors, Peter Busa and Esteban Vicente, whom he met and befriended during the eighties while living and painting in East Hampton. During the nineties, while living and working in Santa Fe, New Mexico, Novak initiated a project called "Light Emanations", in which he created digital computerized programs of changing light levels and configurations on a selection of his large paintings, dramatically illustrating the effect of light changes on color perception. Novak's body of work is extensive and include painting on canvas, panel and paper as well as monotypes, drawings, assemblages, mixed media and prints. He has often worked in series, focusing on a particular medium for years. Among these are "Meditations" (color pencil drawings), "Voices" and "Voices 2" (color aquatint etchings), "Echoes" (painting assemblage with minerals) and "Colors" (350 miniature panel paintings). In recent years his paintings have become more gestural, often with musical allusions. His work bears a relationship to the Light & Space Movement and Minimalism artists James Turrell, Larry Bell, Craig Kauffman, Billy Al Bengston, Peter Alexander, Laddie John Dill, Lita Albuquerque. these are also anticipative of the aquatint etching works by Anish Kapoor. Educated at the Accademia di Brera in Milan, he has since worked in both London and Paris. His art is influenced by Pop Art. Adami was born in Bologna. In 1945, at the age of ten, he began to study painting under the instruction of Felice Carena. He was accepted into the Brera Academy (Accademia di Brera) in 1951, and there studied as a draughtsman until 1954 in the studio of Achille Funi. In 1955 he went to Paris, where he met and was influenced by Roberto Matta and Wifredo Lam. His first solo exhibition came in 1959 in Milan. In his early career, Adami's works were expressionistic, but by the time of his second exhibition in 1964 at Kassel, he had developed a style of painting reminiscent of French cloisonnism, featuring regions of flat color bordered by black lines. Unlike Gauguin, however, Adami's subjects were highly stylized and often presented in fragments. In the 1970s, Adami began to address politics in his art, and incorporated subject matter such as modern European history, literature, philosophy, and mythology. Mateo Manaure (11926 – 2018) was a Venezuelan modern artist. In Venezuela he is considered a master of modernist abstractionism, and is known for his works in the University City of Caracas and for creating the largest glass murals in the world. Mateo Manaure was born on 18 October 1926 in Uracoa, in Monagas state. Between 1941 and 1946 he studied at the Escuela de Artes Plásticas y Artes Aplicadas under the instruction of Antonio Edmundo Monsanto. Here, he studied graphic arts in the workshop of Pedro Ángel González, to whom he was an assistant. He also began participating in the artist salon of the Museo Bellas Artes in Caracas. In 1947 he won the inaugural National Prize for Plastic Arts and traveled to Paris. He made a trip back to Caracas the next year to work with the Taller Libre de Arte, before returning to Paris in 1950 and being involved with the artistic movement of Los disidentes. (The Dissidents), a coalition of Venezuelan artists (active from 1945-50) that also included -Jesús Rafael Soto, Narciso Debourg, Alejandro Otero, Pascual Navarro, Rubén Núñez, Nena Palacios, J.M. Guillermos Péres, Alirio Oramas, Luis Guevara Moreno, Aime Battistini, Armando Barrios, Omar Carreño (refer to lot 222), and Carlos Gonzáles Bogen. Through their journal of the same name and their accompanying radical manifesto No (1950), Los Disidentes championed a progressive vision, that eschewed the conservative academicism embodied by the Escuela de Artes Plásticas and the Escuela Paisajista in Caracas, and in its place advocated for experimentation and geometric abstraction. Upon his return to Caracas in 1952, Manaure set out in earnest to put these ideas into practice and found an immediate affinity with the modernist project unfolding so indicative of that era's unprecedented growth and development. The latter was most evident in the architectural and public art works designed by the legendary modernist architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, whose Cuidad Universitaria, the main campus of the Central University of Venezuela, is considered a landmark of city planning and architecture. Villanueva commissioned Manaure to execute several murals, painted wood reliefs, and stained glass windows for Ciudad Universitaria all reflective of the young artist's newly adapted aesthetic. By 1956, the year both of these works were painted, Manaure was a leading figure of the abstractionist movement, exhibiting abroad at the Venice Biennial and locally at the Museo de Bellas Artes. His geometric abstraction painting infuse his compositions with a kinetic power and lyrical sensibility. Manaure's desire to evoke a sense of the local or regional amid the universal. He returned to Caracas in 1952 to found the Galería Cuatro Muros with Carlos González Bogan, and gave the first exhibition of abstract art in Venezuela. He also began collaborating with architect Carlos Raúl Villanueva, first on the University City of Caracas, to which he contributed 26 works of art and was "promoted" to art supervisor of the campus, and then to other public spaces like the redesign of the neighborhood of 23 de Enero. For the next several years, Manaure continued to develop within abstract art, which made up the Venezuelan artistic avant-garde of that time. He later returned to more traditional graphic art forms, especially lithograph prints, though still did some work in abstract expression. M. Peter Piening was born on March 14, 1908 in Grabow, Germany. He began his education at a private school in Italy, studied at the Jesuit school of Kloster Ettal in Bavaria, and attended the German Stettin Gymnasium, where he graduated in 1926. Between 1926 and 1928 Piening studied design at the Bauhaus in Dessau, Germany. There he was taught by multiple famous twentieth-century artists, including Joseph Albers, Paul Klee and Mies van der Rohe. After receiving his master’s degree from the Bauhaus in 1929, Piening enrolled at the University of Berlin and obtained his PhD in philosophy in 1931. Piening spent his early career free-lancing as an illustrator and artist for various publishing companies, eventually settling in Paris to work for Condé-Nast’s French publication of Vogue. In 1934 he moved to the United States to work in Condé-Nast’s New York City office. For the next two decades, Piening worked for many important advertising agencies and magazine publishers, including the N. W. Ayer and J. Walker Thompson agencies and Life and Fortune magazines. As art director for Life in the 1930s and for Fortune in the 1940s, Piening completely redesigned the layout of each magazine. He also redesigned the layouts for thirty-four other major American magazines, including Town & Country and Cosmopolitan. Through his design work, Piening had a great impact on the American public, although the millions who encountered his work most likely never knew his name. Allan D'Arcangelo (1930-1998) was an American artist and printmaker, best known for his paintings of highways and road signs that border on pop art and minimalism, precisionism, Abstract illusionism and hard-edge painting, and also surrealism. He studied at the University of Buffalo from 1948–1953, where he got his bachelor's degree in history. At this time, he encountered Abstract Expressionist painters who were in vogue at the moment. In 1965 he contributed three screenprints to Original Edition's 11 Pop Artists portfolio. By the 1970s, D'Arcangelo had received significant recognition in the art world. He was well known for his paintings of quintessentially American highways and infrastructure, and in 1971 was commissioned by the Department of the Interior to paint the Grand Coulee Dam in Washington state. However, his sense of morality always trumped his interest in art world fame. In 1975, he decided to quit the gallery that had been representing him for years, Marlborough Gallery, because of the way they handled Mark Rothko legacy. D'Arcangelo rejected Abstract Expressionism, though his early work has a painterly and somewhat expressive feel. He quickly turned to a style of art that seemed to border on Pop Art and Minimalism, Precisionism and Hard-Edge painting. Evidently, he didn't fit neatly in the category of Pop Art, though he shared subjects (women, signs, Superman) and techniques (stencil, assemblage) with these artists.He turned to expansive, if detached scenes of the American highway. These paintings are reminiscent of Giorgio de Chirico-though perhaps not as interested in isolation-and Salvador Dali-though there is a stronger interest in the present and disinterest in the past. These paintings also have a sharp quality that is reminiscent of the precisionist style, or more specifically, Charles Sheeler. 1950s, Before D'Arcangelo returned to New York, his style was roughly figurative and reminiscent of folk art. During the early 1960s, Allan D'Arcangelo was linked with Pop Art. "Marilyn" (1962) depicts an illustrative head and shoulders on which the facial features are marked by lettered slits to be "fitted" with the eyebrows, eyes, nose and mouth which appear off to the right in the composition. In "Madonna and Child," (1963) the featureless faces of Jackie Kennedy and Caroline are ringed with haloes, enough to make their status as contemporary icons perfectly clear. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and the Pratt Institute, New York. Laureate of numerous awards, notably the Rappaport Prize for an Established Artist for 2011, Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Lives and works in Jerusalem. He did his army service in a commando unit and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his discharge from the army he settled in Jerusalem and became interested in bird-watching. In 1981 he began to study architecture at Bezalel, but transferred to the art department. During the period of his studies, he worked primarily in sculpture, but after a period of study in New York, he began to paint as well. From the mid-1980s he made use of simple figures, so abstracted in their form that they became symbolic figures. Some of these figures were connected to biographical baggage, while others were based on trivial events. Many of his works are based on poetic texts that show his interest in esthetics and in the relationship between the painter and society. Fortess (1907-1993) was a painter, printmaker and teacher, of Boston, Massachusetts and Woodstock, N.Y. Fortess was born in Antwerp, Belgium on October 13, 1907, and became an American citizen in 1923. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Art Students League in New York, and the Woodstock School of Painting with Yasuo Kuniyoshi. In 1937 the Works Progress Administration sent him and several other artists to Alaska to document the towns, villages, and remote wilderness landscapes (Pemberton, “Alaska art museum collects WPA’s Depression works from the territory,” Columbia Daily Tribune, November 9, 2003). Trains, trucks, and industrial buildings were what Karl Fortess envisioned when the Public Works of Art Project suggested that he depict “the American Scene.” His work bears the influence of Surrealism, Russsian Constructivist art and Cubism. He was part of a circle of left leaning artists loosley involved with the WPA which included Sol Wilson, Isaac Soyer, Louis Lozowick, Abraham Harriton, Ben Shahn, William Gropper, Nahum Tschacbasov, Morris Shulman, Yasuo Kuniyoshi, Louis Slobodkin, Adolf Dehn, Le Corbusier and Louis Schanker. Karl Fortress taught at the Art Students League, Brooklyn Museum Art School, Louisiana State University, Fort Wright College, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts. He was a member of the Artists Equity Association, Society of American Graphic Artists, American Association of University Professors, and the British Film Institute. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1946, was named an Associate of the National Academy of Design in 1960 and elected to full Academician in 1971. Fortess taught at many different schools, including Boston University School of Fine Art, where he also created an archive of interviews with more than two hundred and fifty contemporary American painters, sculptors, and graphic artists including many with with artists associated with the Woodstock, N.Y. art community. Born in 1930 in Chicago, Robert Natkin grew up in an extended Russian-Jewish immigrant family. In 1948 he began studies at the Art School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Vintage 1960's Lithograph poster for Vancouver Canada art show. Richard Lindner was born in Hamburg, Germany. In 1905 the family moved to Nuremberg, where Lindners mother was owner of a custom-fitting corset business and Richard Lindner grew up and studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule (Arts and Crafts School since 1940 Academy of Fine Arts). From 1924 to 1927 he lived in Munich and studied there from 1925 at the Kunstakademie. In 1927 he moved to Berlin and stayed there until 1928, when he returned to Munich to become art director of a publishing firm. He remained there until 1933, when he was forced to flee to Paris, where he became politically engaged, sought contact with French artists and earned his living as a commercial artist. He was interned when the war broke out in 1939 and later served in the French Army. In 1941 he went to the United States and worked in New York City as an illustrator of books and magazines (Vogue, Fortune and Harper's Bazaar). He began painting seriously in 1952, holding his first one-man exhibit in 1954. His style blends a mechanistic cubism with personal images and haunting symbolism. LIndner maintained contact with the emigre community including New York artists and German emigrants (Albert Einstein, Marlene Dietrich, Saul Steinberg). Though he became a United States citizen in 1948, Lindner considered himself a New Yorker, but not a true American.
