Asaf Ben Zvi, Israeli contemporary artist, was born in Kfar Yehezkel, Israel, 1953. Studied at the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design, Jerusalem and the Pratt Institute, New York. Laureate of numerous awards, notably the Rappaport Prize for an Established Artist for 2011, Tel Aviv Museum of Art. Lives and works in Jerusalem. He did his army service in a commando unit and fought in the Yom Kippur War. After his discharge from the army he settled in Jerusalem and became interested in bird-watching. In 1981 he began to study architecture at Bezalel, but transferred to the art department. During the period of his studies, he worked primarily in sculpture, but after a period of study in New York, he began to paint as well. From the mid-1980s he made use of simple figures, so abstracted in their form that they became symbolic figures. Some of these figures were connected to biographical baggage, while others were based on trivial events. Many of his works are based on poetic texts that show his interest in esthetics and in the relationship between the painter and society. Perez Melero, Spanish/Venezuelan (1938 - ) Born in Spain, PEREZ MELERO began his career in Venezuela where he lived from the late 1950's until the early 1980's. Maintaining workshops in Caracas and New York, he is an artist who exhibits his work internationally. He is in public collections including the Spanish Museum of Contemporary Art, CANTV, Fundarte, the White House, the American Institute of Architects, and the Women in Military Service to America Memorial at Arlington National Cemetery. ARTIST STATEMENT My 3-dimensional constructions are built mostly from wood, paper, canvas and acrylic paint. Their ideas evolves from an organic and intuitive process. The final work is a combination of my creative vision and a highly organized process employing disciplines of geometry and applied design. Viewers should interact physically with my constructions. They need to walk around them and view them from different perspectives. Up close one can see the detailed and intricate methods of their construction. From further back, one can appreciate their total effect. Color and light and how they interact are central to my work. Color is painted on pieces of wood attached to a high-contrast geometric background. Light penetrates between them, reflecting color from one to another and on the background. These reflected colors seem to mix in the air and produce an impression of others. As light sources change angle or intensity, and as the viewer moves around the work, new colors can be perceived even though they aren't really there. The interaction between color and light has produced an illusion. This relationship between color and light, in part, defines my work. Dee Shapiro is a Contemporary American artist and writer associated with the Pattern and Decoration movement. I have seen this referred to as Hejaz. Dee Shapiro was inspired to be an Artist in her early years of education. Dee's career started in the 1970s as a pattern painter with her works of art included in the Pattern and Decoration at P.S. 1 (other artists included Mary Grigoriadis, Valerie Jaudon, Joyce Kozloff, Robert Kushner, Kim MacConnel, Miriam Schapiro, Betty Woodman, Robert Zakanitch.) She researched and explored the Fibonacci Progression in color on graph paper and also explored geometric complexity of architectural designs, leading her to create the small horizontal oil paintings of cities and landscapes. Dee Shapiro became a Yaddo fellow in 2017. Dee Shapiro obtained her bachelor's degree in 1958 and Master of Science in 1960 from Queens College, City University of New York. Dee Shapiro is an artist that sees the subject on a large scale, but what she creates is on a diminutive scale. Shapiro's strength is the ability to give expressive power on canvas that makes her work seem larger than they are. Dee Shapiro has been a teacher, lecturer, and writer through career. "I have been concerned with women’s issues most of my life. I have worked to enhance the position of women in society through supporting the work of women artists. As a contributor to Heresies Magazine and a founder of a women’s cooperative gallery as well as developing a body of work that references women’s work and more currently focuses on female sexual imagery, I identify with feminist matters and affairs." Pioneering female illustrator Gwenda Morgan creates an exuberantly complex image of a squad of broom-riding - pointed-hatted witches with black cats in tow. They fly through an inky black moonlit sky and are witnessed by only a rooftop owl. With the simple means of black and white, Morgan has rendered a highly charged composition that pluses with electricity. The whole image is on the cusp of being abstract while being representational. It is brilliantly designed with great attention to detail and is evocative of a sorcerer's malignant powers. The suite of prints was included with the first 50 copies of the book, and a further 8 suites were printed, from which this print comes. Gwenda Morgan (1 February 1908 – 1991) was a British wood engraver. She lived in the town of Petworth in West Sussex. Early life Morgan was born in Petworth, her father having moved there to work at the ironmongers, Austen & Co, of which he later became proprietor. He was the son of a Welsh-born military farrier. Education Following school in Petworth and at Brighton and Hove High School, Morgan, studied at Goldsmiths' College of Art in London from 1926. From 1930 she attended the Grosvenor School of Modern Art in Pimlico where she was taught and strongly influenced by the principal, Iain Macnab. The Grosvenor School was a progressive art school and the championing of wood engraving and linocuts fitted with its democratic approach to the arts. Marcaccio was born to a native Argentine mother and Italian father in Rosario de Santa Fe where he later attended the University of Philosophy. In 1985, at age 22, he moved to New York City, where he continues to live and work. He has exhibited widely throughout theUnited States, Europe and South America. In 2004, Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein organized a retrospective of his work, the same year that a solo exhibition was mounted at the Miami Art Museum. He regularly exhibits with galleries in New York, Los Angeles, Berlin, Paris, Cologne and Barcelona. He has participated in numerous group exhibitions, including; the 44th Biennial Exhibition of Contemporary American Painting, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC in 1995, Summer Projects at PS1 Contemporary Art Center, New York in 2002, and Documenta 11, Kassel, Germany in 2002. His multidisciplinary collaborations include projects with the architect Greg Lynn that resulted in an exhibition at the Wexner Center for the Arts, Columbus, Ohio in 2001 and projects with composer Claudio Baroni creating animated operas and a 2005 scored, paintball performance at Weston Hall in Toronto, Canada. Marcaccio’s work investigates whether the traditional medium of painting can survive in the digital age. He has used printmaking transfer techniques to make paintings and became well known in the 1990s for his manipulations of the conventions of painting. More recently, he has relied upon digital and industrial techniques to infuse his painting process with spatial and temporal concerns. The results are environmental paintings, animations, and “Paintants” that combine digitally manipulated imagery, sculptural form, and three dimensionally painted surfaces.
