Landscape with Trees

Louis Aston Knight, was the son of the American expatriate artist, Daniel Ridgway Knight. Born in Paris in 1873, Louis, unlike his father, had the privilege to be brought up in a home where he was surrounded by art and music. Raised and educated in Europe, Louis attended the Chigwell School in England for his Liberal Arts Education and began his artistic training, under the guidance of his father. Later he studied formally with the great French Romantic painters, Robert-Fleury and Jules Lefebvre.
In 1894 Aston Knight debuted at the Paris Salon, starting a highly acclaimed career. Among his many awards, he won a Bronze medal at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, an honorable mention at the Paris Salon in 1901, a gold medal in Lyon in 1903, a gold medal in Geneva and in Nantes in 1904 and Gold medals at the Paris Salon in both 1905 and 1906, earning him the title Hors concours as the first American to win two gold medals at the Salon in two consecutive years. Knight, was also made a Knight of the Legion of Honor in 1924 becoming an Officer in 1928 and eventually a Commander in 1934.
Louis Aston Knight is most famous for his French landscapes executed in and around his home in Beaumont-le-Roger. Aston looked up to Claude Monet, and visited him from time to time at his home in Giverny. He was particularly impressed with Monet's gardens, and strove to cultivate a garden as beautiful as the master's. Knight also awarded prizes each year to the neighboring peasants who kept the nicest gardens. This ensured him of good models for his cottage landscape paintings.
Gradually Aston Knight became well known in the New York art scene and traveled to the United States many times – painting scenes in New York, Florida and California. In 1911, Knoedler and Co. held an exhibition of his landscapes of the U.S.A. and France. His exhibition at the Levy Gallery in New York, in 1931 attracted much attention. In fact, "Art News" critiqued the show (26 December issue) and described his fame and plein-air approach:

For the last 15 years, Wolfe has been making contour line drawings of plants form observation. From her drawings, she isolates silhouettes into paper stencils which she uses to create oil paintings & works on paper – or cut out of metal to make sculptures. Her work is cumulative in nature – gradually marking time & seasonal change, unity & variety, individual & collective beauty.

In Thornton Dial's assemblage, masklike faces with staring eyes and open mouths emerge from a dense maze of layers streaked in red, white, blue, and black. Ropes painted brown snake over the surface, twisting into bodies that stretch from one side of the painting to the other. Additional objects have been attached to the surface—a paint-covered metal grill at the top and a wire rack on the right edge, for example—which accentuate the artwork's sculptural appearance. The resulting lattice of colors, forms, and objects gives the impression that, if the artwork's strata were excavated, much more could be discovered.
In many respects, "excavation" is an appropriate way to approach Top of the Line (Steel).By layering paint and objects that Dial collects from around his home in Bessemer, Alabama, a suburb of Birmingham, the artist creates a series of evocative relationships. Dial encourages viewers to look closely at the artwork, excavating meaning from the interplay of forms and even from the title, which has several interpretations. Drawn to art since childhood, Jose Antonio Fuentes began his artistic career at a young age in the 1960s. At nine years old the Spanish born artist sold drawings to his neighbors and exchanged paintings for gifts with his classmates. An academically gifted student, he ranked higher than his peers and joined older classmates to enter the baccalaureate program at the age of ten. There he completed additional advanced arts courses.
In 1970 Fuentes featured in his first group exhibitions in local and provincial cultural centers. Unfortunately, his academic and artistic career was truncated when his father abruptly left his family, leaving the family in financial difficulty. At the age of fourteen, Fuentes was forced to leave school to begin working and support his family.
After years of both working and saving money, in 1978 Fuentes garnered enough savings to enroll in school at La Marina in Spain, where he was first in his class. Whenever circumstances allowed he continued to draw and paint, participate in art contests, and visit all nearby museums and artists' workshops. Fuentes strongly believes that observing other cultures, landscapes, and people is vital to a painter’s understanding of how to portray the world.
In the early 1980s Fuentes married and began a family. The domestic and financial obligations to his young family prevented the free time necessary to continue painting. Fuentes notes that the postponement of his artistic career to raise his family is never a source of regret as there is nothing more fulfilling than to see his children grow.
As his children grew older in age and required less of Fuentes’s time in the 1990s, he was able to travel more extensively and resumed his cultural tours. He visited cities in Spain such as Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, and Bilbao, and spend countless hours in acclaimed museums and cultural centers including El Prado, Thyssen, Conde Duque, the Sorolla Museum, the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao, the Picasso museum, the Joan Miro Foundation, and the Tapies Foundation in Barcelona. He also extensively attended exhibition openings, artist talks, conferences and workshops where he learns from masters of realism including Toral, Naranjo, Antonio Lopez, Munoz Vera, Macarron, Leon Olmo, Claudio Bravo, Lapayese, Perez Villalta...
