Pair of neoclassical Italian chests of drawers in inlaid wood, XVIII century
Located in Vicenza, IT
This exceptional pair of Italian neoclassical 18th century dressers in wood richly inlaid on the front, sides and 4 truncated pyramid legs are top-quality example of Italian 18th century cabinetmaking. The pair of commodes are originals from the second part of the 18th century (1780).
The front of the pair of commodes is divided into three levels of drawers, two thinner ones at the top and bottom and a thicker central one. This arrangement makes the front of the pair of drawers even more elegant.
On the front of the central drawer stands a large oval with two mirror-image neoclassical figures represented. Rich and complex foliate motifs start from the oval and extend gracefully across the entire surface. Corresponding to the upper and lower drawers, both frontally and laterally, runs a band with inlays depicting classical style garlands with ribbons, cameos and phytomorphic elements. On the side, inside geometric figures created through the combination of various wood essences there are other garlands and recurring elements in the inlays of the neoclassical period.
The pillars are also inlaid with floral and leaf decorations. The four truncated pyramid legs are also inlaid.
These eighteenth-century Italian chests of drawers were exhibited at the Triennale Museum in Milan on the occasion of the exhibition "Il Salone, la città", which took place in conjunction with the "Salone del Mobile" in Milan. We have all the documentation attesting to this museum exhibition.
The dressers are entirely inlaid with the use of different wood essences. The inlaid surfaces have also been pyrographed and burnished and are in excellent condition. This very refined technique allows you to create greater definition of the decorations, giving three-dimensionality and chiaroscuro to the drawings. With a dark background, the elegant inlays create neoclassical designs inspired by the taste of the time and the famous furniture of the Lombard cabinetmaker Giuseppe Maggiolini di Parabiago, who brought the inlay technique applied to neoclassical furniture to the highest levels.
The marble top is contemporary. The handles and mouthpieces of the locks, also original, are in gilded bronze.
The neoclassical furniture of the eighteenth century
The last quarter of the eighteenth century coincides with the affirmation of the neoclassical taste, in opposition to the previous rococo or baroque style, particularly widespread and appreciated in Lombardy. An echo of this transition is visible in Maggiolini's first works, namely rounded chests...

Zanotta Edizioni Genesio Chest of Drawers in Veneered Wood by Alik Cavaliere
Signed original. Wooden frame veneered in walnut-root in various colours. Cast bronze handles represent the Genesis
Born from the experimentations of Zabro Zanotta Edizioni is a special collection of furnishing items verging on art and design. Items in this collection are inspired by the Italian artistic handcrafting tradition. Free from the bonds of industrial production, they are charged with the powerful charm of "handmade” objects.
Furniture as sculptures and stories. Creations designed by Alik Cavaliere have an unmistakeable mark in art as in design. The role of decoration is central: wooden inlay work, smelted metal and lacquered images. This Roman artist who became Milanese by adoption (for 30 years, he taught sculpture at the Academy of Brera, where he was also the director) was also a design alchemist. He used metals, bronzes, porcelain and glass and experimented with enamels, rare pigments and even gold. He worked from memory by soldering, smelting and assembling. “I always used materials like a director does, like a theatrical property man or the narrator of stories and tales.” Cavaliere has created 3 show pieces...

Pressed Bamboo Chest of Drawers by Southern Nurseries, 1970
By Vivai del Sud
Located in Conversano, IT
Exceptional four-drawer chest by Vivai del Sud, the iconic Italian atelier known for its use of natural materials and a refined, exotic style, particularly active between the 1960s and 1980s. This piece perfectly embodies the brand's sophisticated and Mediterranean aesthetic.
The structure is entirely clad in pressed bamboo arranged in a herringbone pattern, a detail that adds visual rhythm and depth to the surface. The geometric motif extends seamlessly across all visible sides--front, top, and sides--showingcasing outstanding craftsmanship.
The four drawers, equal in height, run on wooden glides and are fitted with pairs of patinated brass knobs. The cylindrical handles add an elegant and discreet accent that doesn't disrupt the harmony of the overall design.
The chest is in excellent structural condition, with a warm and natural patina that highlights the quality of the material and its age. Minor traces of wear may be present, consistent with the piece's authenticity and history.
A highly characterful piece, ideal for both modernist interiors and boho-chic, tropical, or eclectic settings. A rare example of Vivai del Sud's production, increasingly sought after by collectors and lovers of 20th-century Italian design.

Born in Milan in 1930, designer Cesare Colombo—who went by Joe—was the second of three brothers. His father, Giuseppe, was an industrialist who inherited a ribbon factory and turned it into an electrical conductor manufacturer. Colombo came to design relatively late, having spent most of his twenties pursuing painting and sculpture. He studied at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Brera, Milan, in the early 1950s. While there, he joined the Movimento Nucleare, an avant-garde art movement founded by Enrico Baj and Sergio Dangelo in 1951. Spurred on by international anxiety surrounding the nuclear bomb, this group of painters aimed to break free of the static boundaries of traditional painting.
In 1953, Colombo made his first foray into design by creating a decorative ceiling for a Milan jazz club. In 1954, he made a series of television shrines for the Milan Trienniale. Inspired by these experiences, Colombo enrolled as an architecture student at Milan Polytechnic. When his father became ill in 1958, Colombo abandoned painting altogether; he and his younger brother, Gianni, took over the family business, using the factory as an experimental space for the latest production techniques and materials, including fiberglass, PVC, and polyethylene.
In 1962, Colombo opened a design studio in Milan, from which he worked primarily on architectural commissions—including several ski lodges and mountain hotels—as well as product design. His furniture designs were characterized by optimistically bold, round forms, and he championed the notion of using modern technologies to create new design solutions.
Colombo’s design career was cut tragically short in 1971 when he died of heart failure at age 41. However, he was remarkably prolific during his near decade as a designer. Notable projects include some of the most iconic designs of the 1960s, such as his 1963 Elda Armchair, made completely of fiberglass; the 1964 Ragno outdoor light, which doubled as a seat; the stackable Universale chair (1965/67), which came in varying heights and was created completely from polypropylene; his 1967 modular furniture series known as the Additional Living System, which was composed of different-size curved pieces that could be pinned together in various configurations to form chairs, sofas, or entire living areas, and which ultimately included the famous 1969 Tubo lounge chair; and the Optic alarm clock and Bobby trolley...
