Howard Hodgkin based this print on a trip he took to visit his good friend and fellow Petersburg Press collaborator David Hockney in Los Angeles. The mid-eighties saw new levels of abstraction in Hodgkin’s work, building exuberantly off the ambiguous spaces of his earlier work. The artist used six colors of paint, producing a unique depth and texture to each print in this edition.
Howard Hodgkin was introduced to the etching technique used in DH in Hollywood at Petersburg Press, where he was a long-time collaborator. Soft-ground etching allowed him to work fluidly and spontaneously, giving his prints the characteristic black brushstrokes seen in this print.

Silkscreened colophon sheet of the edition XVII of the iconic "Flash" Portfolio; hand signed and uniquely numbered by Andy Warhol, plus silkscreened print with teletype text. These two prints from Warhol's iconic "Flash Portfolio" were selected for inclusion in the blockbuster Andy Warhol retrospective at the Whitney Museum in 2019. (see photos). The plaque on the Whitney exhibition (also see included photo) describes the portfolio as follows:" These screenprints reflect Warhol's ongoing interest in the Kennedy assassination, an obsession that intensified following the release of the Warren Commission report and the publication of stills from a short home movie of the event, published by bystander Abraham Zapruder. Flash - November 22, 1963 is an unbound Artists Book with text based upon the original Associated Press newswire bulletins. For his illustrations, Warhol appropriated the recurring image of Kennedy from a 1960 campaign poster, and sourced the remaining photographs, including pictures of Lee Harvey Oswald and an ad for the type of rifle used, from Life's [Magazine] sustained coverage of the assassination and its aftermath.."

Two Andy Warhol silkscreens on white wove paper comprising the signed colophon and text pages of his iconic 1968 "Flash" Portfolio, as well as Warhol's wraparound silkscreen of the distinctive teletype text. The colophon page silkscreen is hand signed by Andy Warhol and uniquely numbered XVII in pencil from the edition of 26, which, it expressly states, was not for sale. The second silkscreen sheet features teletype print describing events surrounding the assassination of President John F. Kennedy - the defining event of a generation as contemporaneously re-imagined by the most important Pop artist of the era.
Warhol created the "Flash - November 22, 1963" portfolio of prints in 1968 to depict the continuing media spectacle surrounding JFK's assassination. He named the portfolio after the news flash Teletype texts that reported the assassination and its aftermath - the first major news event played out live on TV. The Flash portfolio includes a series of eleven silkscreens depicting President Kennedy smiling broadly, a presidential seal with bullet holes through it, and other symbolic representations of that tragedy. This extremely rare and historic invitation/exhibition poster was designed by Duchamp on the occasion of a group exhibition at New York's Cordier & Ekstrom Gallery for the Marcel Duchamp Fund of the Americas Chess Foundation in 1966. Duchamp used the RSVP cards he sent to various artists as a design for this invitation. Many of these RSVP cards had the artist's autographs, and a few, like the one from Alexander Calder, included personal notes to Duchamp. This powerful limited edition lithograph by William Steen was published in 1988 as part of the Art Against Aids portfolio, numbered 38/50.
Superb provenance as it is was acquired from the original Art Against AIDS Portfolio published in Houston, Texas. This will be the first time the work will be removed from the portfolio. The late 1980s was the height of the AIDS epidemic, and this was one of many efforts by the creative community to raise funds to assist in fighting this deadly scourge that disproportionately affected the artistic community.
William Steen 1949-2008
William Steen, artist, collector, curator, and mystic, died of pancreatic cancer on December 20 in New York, where he has lived since 2001. Long time framer at the Menil Collection, the soft-spoken Steen is remembered in Houston where he had his first exhibition of paintings in 1978 at the Roberto Molina Gallery. In 1984 Steen made his first of several trips to India, photographing thousands of Tibetan Buddhist ritual paintings. A Walk Through the Tuileries Gardens is based on a memory of a stroll in Paris distilled through the ephemera he found along the way. ' The legendary Peter Blake, the father of British Pop Art, is renowned for his love of gathering and collecting the ephemera of life, of memories, of dreams and whimsies, sometimes mingled with those of other historical fantasists. Possessions he regards as symbolic of his relationships with his world, carefully questioning the personal significance of each object in this respect. The scraps of tickets, fragments of plastic, driftwood, pebbles and sycamore leaf in A Walk Through the Tuileries gardens are evocative and ephemeral souvenirs, gathered at the time and collated later perhaps with a whiff of romance. His image takes us, in turn, on a stroll down the wide gravel, under the autumnal trees, a lingering taste of saucisson and red wine on our palate and with a sudden impulse to take a turn on the Caroussel. This whimsical Peter Blake print would make a great gift for any Blake fan.
Legendary British Pop Art pioneer British Blake was born in 1932, and after his formal training at the Gravesend School of Art, then at the Royal Academy of Art, he broke away from tradition, producing work from 1960 on that would come to define the British Pop Art Movement. He came to be known as the Grandfather of Pop Art, and his art achieved iconic status with his sleeve for The Beatles’ Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
Blake’s art draws on imagery from the popular culture of the past and present, as well as from the canon of fine art, thus creating an alternative, more democratic visual aesthetic. He freely mixes the ‘high’ with the ‘low’, ultimately inviting us to see beyond such distinctions. Always playful, and at times irreverent, he sets up the most unlikely juxtapositions across time and space, creating conversations and ‘parties’ to which all are invited. An abiding theme is an investigation, and celebration, of England and Englishness.
Collage has always been a hallmark of Blake’s work, allowing him to freely mix found objects and images of people and other artworks; screenprinting, with its use of stencils and layers, lends itself perfectly to this technique, and indeed it was Pop Art that fully realised the potential of screenprinting as a medium for complex replication.
