What it doesn't mention is that Andy Warhol famously painted his portrait in 1986! Peter Halley is that legendary. According to Halley, he didn't realize until after Warhol's death that the polaroids Warhol took of him with his famous "big shot" camera were made into an original painting. Warhol's painting of Peter Halley was included in the recent Andy Warhol retrospective...

2 Renee Ritter Nude Figure Studies
By Renee Ritter
Located in New York, NY
Renee Gaylin Ritter (American, b. 1935) 1. Untitled, 1974 Print (lithograph?) Sight: 16 x 20 in. Framed: 21.25 x 25 x 1 in. Signed and dated lower right 2. Untitled, c. 1970s Print (Lithograph?) Sight: 20 x 16 1/2 in. Framed: 25 x 20 7/8 x 7/8 in. Edition 18/74 (10/74?) Signed and numbered lower right Bio from Renee Ritter's website: I'm a New Yorker, born and bred. I was raised with noise and rush and life all around me. My world was vivid technicolor, and no one ran faster than I did. I met and married the man of my dreams, and had the joys and exasperations of raising a family. And all of these events would have been the colors of my canvas if not for the happy opportunity of being able to spend some years in Japan. Japan is the perfect place to plunk down a New Yorker. While it races along on one level, there is this other part of Japan that forces you to hit the mental brakes until the images racing by slow down enough to actually be seen! Eastern thought is a well from which to draw the pure water that clears the mind and strengthens the soul. I've had the unbelievable pleasure of turning visions into realities, and of having those pieces of me scattered around the world. I'm thrilled that they've found so much acceptance in exhibitions, and I'm humbled at the thought that they hang on the walls of museums. But I have to say that I am most pleased when they speak so loudly to another soul that that person has to bring me home to continue our conversation for years to come. For the last 18 years, I've been a teacher, too. I have all the joys of being able to step back from what I do, and think through the principles I've recognized and the pathways I've wandered. And then to offer those insights to others to help them bring out their own mental images for the rest of us to share. After high school, in 1927, he obtained the authorization to enter the Beaux-Arts of the city provided he prepared architecture. After a year, he persuades his family to let him study at the painting studio. He first attended a training at the School of Fine Arts in Montpellier; Then in 1930, a fellow of the city of Montpellier as the ward of the nation, he entered the Beaux-Arts in Paris. In 1943, he became a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants Bordelais, which regularly organizes exhibitions of Parisian artists (Bissière, Lhote, Walch, etc.); this has a positive influence on him; Artistic emulation allows him to assert his style even more intensely. In 1948 he met the writer Raymond Guérin who introduced him to Maurice Toesca, Marcel Arland and, later, Jean Paulhan. In 1950, he illustrated Raymond Guérin's book "Testamentary fragment". In 1949 he was chosen by Jacques Lassaigne, who came to Bordeaux to preside over the regional selection of the Prix de la Jeune Peinture. He won the price Drouant, the first mention of the price (fourth prize on more than 90 competitors, including Lagrange, Lapoujade, Rebeyrolle, also mentioned). In the jury, Gaston Diehl noticed him and invited him to the Salon de Mai of which he is the founder. It is the first manifestation of Sarthou with the Parisian public with two paintings: "Still life" and "Open window". He will participate in this show until 1963. He moved to Paris in 1950, where he was appointed professor of drawing at Lycée Henri IV, which allowed him to exhibit in the salons of the capital and to be more recognized. Light by Shinsuke Notomi book and print with poem and Japanese brushwork
Located in New York, NY
This listing includes two works by Shinsuke Notomi: a book and print. The book was produced in a limited edition as part of Shinsuke Notomi’s 1982 exhibit “Light”. In 1979 Notomi traveled to Nepal and Himalayas, did drawings for the "Light" series of lithographs which were published in Paris in 1982 and exhibited at the Cartia Granoff Gallery, Paris, and then in 1984 at the Laforet Museum Akasaka, Tokyo. Reminiscent of Jasper Johns' Target with Plaster Casts, the Shinsuke Notomi lithograph depicts concentric circles and checked rectangles with small points of white throughout. Watercolor-like shading gives this work a fluid spontaneity. Shinsuke Notomi was born in Shanghai in 1942. He came to the United States in 1962, studied at the Art Student League in New York, and then earned a BA and a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) at the California College of Arts & Crafts in San Francisco. He taught art at Indiana State University from 1972 to 1974, and then traveled to Peru and Bolivia to study Inca art...

This series was borne from the civil unrest in France and the events of May 1968. It depicts social archetypes of different ranks: the imperialist, the capitalist, the military, the intellectual neutral, the policeman, and the indifferent. Julio Le Parc was born in Mendoza, Argentina in 1928 and currently lives and works in Paris where he has resided since the late 1950s. In 1964 he was awarded the Special Prize (acquisition) in the Premio Internacional Torcuato Di Tella, Buenos Aires, Argentina, and in 1996, the International Painting Grand Prix at the XXXIII Venice Biennial, Italy. Following his expulsion from Paris in 1968, he travelled around various European countries only to return five months later when the restriction was revoked. Le Parc participated in Unofficial Latin America, held in Paris, and the Medellín Biennial in Colombia in 1970. Le Parc held his first solo exhibition at the Howard Wise Gallery, New York (1966), which was followed his first retrospective exhibition, held at the Instituto Di Tella in Buenos Aires, Argentina (1967). Subsequently Le Parc has held numerous retrospective exhibitions in major museums in Havana, Düsseldorf, Montevideo, Caracas, Asunción, Mexico City, Stockholm, Berlin, Madrid, Barcelona, Santiago de Chile, and Porto Alegre. His most recent solo exhibitions were held at the Palais de Tokyo in Paris (2013) and at the Daros Foundation (2014). Notable writings include: A propósito de arte espectáculo... O'Neill accuses Faulkner of lack of loyalty and support (Nancy & Jim Dine)
By R.B. Kitaj
Located in New York, NY
Ronald B. (R.B.) Kitaj Nancy and Jim Dine, or O'Neill accuses Faulkner of lack of loyalty and support (Kinsman 40), 1970 16 Color Silkscreen with collage and coating on different wove papers Hand signed and numbered in pencil 29/70 on the front. The back (which is framed) bears the Kelpra Studio blindstamp Frame included: held in the original vintage metal frame Very rare stateside. Other editions of this work are in the permanent collections of major institutions like the British museum, which has the following explanation: "The artist Jim Dine and his wife Nancy were close to Kitaj and his family, especially after the death of Elsi, Kitaj's first wife in 1969. They sometimes stayed with the Dines at their farm in Vermont during Kitaj's second teaching sojourn in the United States. Dine and Kitaj held a joint show at the Cincinnati Museum of Art in 1973. In the catalogue both artists contributed an insightful 'essay' on each other with Dine stressing Kitaj's obsession with all things American and baseball-related...' The alternate title, "O'Neill accuses Faulkner of lack of loyalty and support" can be seen on the artwork itself, and clearly is some kind of inside joke among friends. By the way -- do you see the way the colored dots are placed over the figures? Kitaj was doing this well before Baldessari who made it famous; that's how pioneering he was at the time. Referenced in the catalogue raisonne of Kitaj's prints, Kinsman, 40 Published and printed by Chris Prater of Kelpra Studio, Kentish Town, United Kingdom Ronald Brooks (RB) Kitaj Biography R.B. (Ronald Brooks) Kitaj was born in 1932 in Cleveland Ohio. One of the most prominent painters of his time, particularly in England where he spent some four decades spanning the late 1950s through the late 1990s, Kitaj is considered a key figure in European and American contemporary painting. While his work has been considered controversial, he is regarded as a master draughtsman with a commitment to figurative art. His highly personal paintings and drawings reflect his deep interest in history; cultural, social and political ideologies; and issues of identity. Part of an extraordinary cohort who emerged from the Royal College of Art circa 1960, which included Peter Blake, Patrick Caulfield, and David Hockney, Kitaj was immediately pegged as one of its leading figures. The London Times greeted his first solo show in 1963 as a long-awaited and galvanizing event: “Mr. R.B. Kitaj’s first exhibition, now that it has at last taken place, puts the whole ‘new wave’ of figurative painting in this country during the last two or three years into perspective.” In 1976, KItaj curated the exhibition The Human Clay, and in the essay he wrote for it he proposed the existence of a “School of London”—a label which stuck to a group of painters that includes Francis Bacon, Frank Auerbach, Lucian Freud, Leon Kossoff, Michael Andrews...
