Joel Shapiro, Untitled, abstract geometric limited edition etching, 1992
By Joel Shapiro
Located in New York, NY
Joel Shapiro's post-minimalist work often references the human body, in a variety of poses, represented by geometric forms. In Untitled, 1992, a rust-red rectangle supports three black rectangles piled at varying angles. The forms have light, sketchy lines around them, reminiscent of Futurist dynamism markings or perhaps a draftsman's study of dimensions. A gelatinous blue form intersects the balanced rectangles, while further blue forms tumble out of a fanned series of black triangles. Shapiro has assembled mechanism, geometry, balance, fluid, solid and motion into this dynamic etching, which was published by Pace Prints...

Raymond Pettibon Black Flag 1980 (Pettibon punk flyer)
By Raymond Pettibon
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Raymond Pettibon Black Flag 1980: Rare early Raymond Pettibon Black Flag punk flyer designed by Pettibon for a gig by Black Flag, Mommy Men, the Circle Jerks, Stains, and Descendents at the Hideaway; Sept. 19, 1980; striking, highly collectible early Raymond Pettibon punk art. Off-set lithograph. 8.5 x 11 inches Very good overall vintage condition. Unsigned from an edition of unknown. Rare. Further Background: Before Pettibon gained international recognition in the mid-80s for his skillful marriage of text and drawing, he was an important figure in the Los Angeles alternative scene. Working inside the punk movement, Pettibon’s art from this early period encapsulates the irreverence, intensity, and heightened self-awareness of youth, and chronicles the development of his characteristic violently shadowed and coarse aesthetic. (Source: MOCA, Tuscon). Raymond Pettibon popularized the American punk aesthetic with his designs that captured the riotous and chaotic character of punk such as this rare Black Flag flyer...

Joel Shapiro's post-minimalist work often references the human body, in a variety of poses, represented by geometric forms. The forms have light, sketchy lines around them, reminiscent of Futurist dynamism markings or perhaps a draftsman's study of dimensions. Untitled: Yellow, Green and Black Lithograph
By Marjorie S. Kubach
Located in New York, NY
Marjorie Shaw Kubach (American), "Untitled: Yellow, Green & Black Lithograph, Abstract Lithograph signed in Pencil, 26 x 19, Late 20th Century Colors: Yellow, Green, Black Allen Kubach and Marjorie Shaw Kubach were two married artists who explored their artistic styles together throughout their careers. The artists showed their works largely throughout New Jersey and New York, sometimes joining together for the same exhibits. The works that Detour Gallery has acquired are representative of the pair’s time in which they explored abstraction. These works were made in a postwar era, following the art world’s shifted focus on New York as the center for new modern art. Art at this time was evolving, and the experimentation of abstract expressionism, geometric abstraction, and minimalism evidently paved the path for later artists such as Allen and Marjorie. As noted in the New York Times by Vivian Reynor, Allen Kubach “specializes in strong colors, expressing them in vertical and diagonal grids laid one on top of another.” In such a manner, Allan reflects these contemporary ideals that were taking New York by storm in the 1960’s and 70’s. The linear focus and non objective use of color found in Allen’s work correlates to that of the pioneers of abstract and minimalistic work such as Sol Le Witt...

Vintage 1970s Alexander Calder poster (Calder prints)
By (after) Alexander Calder
Located in NEW YORK, NY
Alexander Calder 'La Grenouille et Cie': Vintage original 1971 poster for the exhibition Pace Columbus (Ohio) featuring a printed Calder signature. Medium: Offset lithograph. Dimensions: 25 x 32 inches. An original 1st printing in very good vintage condition. Plate signed on the lower right from an edition of unknown. This is an original 1970s poster and not a recent reproduction of any kind. Alexander Calder changed the course of modern art with his three-dimensional kinetic sculptures, which Marcel Duchamp named “mobiles.” Resonating with tenets of Futurism, Constructivism, and early non-objective painting, Calder’s mobiles consist of boldly colored abstract shapes, which are made from industrial materials and hang in lyrical balance. Calder was an international phenomenon during his lifetime. He won the grand prize for sculpture at the 1952 Venice Biennale, where he represented the United States. He earned the French Legion of Honor and the American Presidential Medal of Freedom, among other honors. Calder has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, the Rijksmuseum, the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, and the Museo Reina Sofía. His work regularly sells for eight figures on the secondary market. Though Calder is best known for his mobiles, his diverse practice also encompassed standing sculpture, painting, set and costume design, large-scale public installation, and jewelry-making. Tessuto Veneziano (c-5/10) contemporary bstract etching and chine colle print
By Ann Aspinwall
Located in New York, NY
Printmaker Ann Aspinwall made this etching in 1999, while living in Venice. During those years she did several etchings that adhered to a certain principle. She drew a freehand line, as straight as possible; and beneath that line drew another, following as closely as possible the one above. Each successive line followed the line directly above, imitating all the curves and shakes. These imperfections, or deviations from the original line, became more and more prominent, each line being an interpretation of what came before it. Around that time, Aspinwall discovered the writing of John Dewey on the subject of rhythm in his Art as Experience (1934): Rhythm, writes Dewey, is an “ordered variation of changes.” There is no rhythm “when there is a uniformly even flow, with no variations of intensity or speed,” when “variations of pulse and rest do not occur.” “Variations of intensity are relative to the subject matter directly experienced. Each beat, in differentiating a part within the whole, adds to the force of what went before while creating a suspense that is a demand for something to come. It is not a variation in a single feature but a modulation of the entire pervasive and unifying qualitative substratum.” Ten years later Aspinwall returned to this plate. Looking at it again after a long time she perceived the strong influence of Venice; the texture calls to mind water and fabric. The artist was unable to decide on one color for an edition, so after printing many color proofs, she chose ten combinations of colored lines on colored Japanese papers. The prints evoke the light and surfaces of Venice. The title of the series, Tessuto Veneziano, means Venetian textile...
