Rare Dutch Church Interior Rozenburg Porcelain Tile Painting After J. Bosboom
By Rozenburg Porcelain
Located in Lisse, NL
Beautiful large tile painting of a Gothic church interior by W.B. van Horssen (1863-1931). We very recently purchased a small collection of very rare antique plaques, tiles and vases by some of the best known maker's in the history of Dutch ceramics. This unique, hand-crafted and hand-painted work of art is the first one of that collection and this stunning and rare, single tiles plaque is in its original wooden frame. Because of their contrasting colors, the frame and tile painting go together really well. And these are in fact two works of art, because both the stunningly hand-painted tile and the wooden frame are as good as they come. With the borders of the frame coming as far outward as they do and the Gothic church interior that is drawing your attention deep into the back of the church, they really complement each other. However beautiful the frame is, this antique ofcourse is about the painting and this particular painting is by one of Rozenburg's finest (Wijnand Bastiaan van Horssen) who has perfectly managed to enhance the depth that is already in this composition, thus creating a visual effect that is an absolute joy to look at. By the way, the price that you see on the 'sticker' that the former owner put on the back after he had purchased this piece was put there in the 'old days' when we still had the Dutch guilder. The original painting of the Nieuwe Kerk in the Hague Holland (built in circa 1650) was by J. Bosboom. Besides one small old crack and a few minor imperfections to the frame, this unique and wonderful work of art is in very good condition still and may it grace the home or chapel of a Gothic style enthousiast soon. Mind you, because of their relative fragility very few of these amazing and high value works of art are still around. Rozenburg of the Hague, where this unique tile painting was created, was always one of the greats in Dutch ceramics and many of their works grace museums all over Europe. Rozenburg’s shareholders included the likes of the marine painter H.W. Mesdag (1831-1915) and the poet and literary critic Carel Vosmaer (1826-1888), and its tile painters numbered rising artists like Willem de Zwart...

Midcentury Stoneware Bowl by Gunnar Nylund for Rörstrand, Sweden, 1950s
By Gunnar Nylund, Rörstrand
Located in Stockholm, SE
Beautiful stoneware bowl by Gunnar Nylund, in an oval boat shape with an undulating edge. Large size. Purple and blue glaze with nuances of brown. Gunnar Nylund was one of the most influential ceramicists and designers of the Swedish mid-century period. He was Rörstrand’s creative leader from 1931 until 1949 and as such propelled the artistic work at the factory and served as mentor to younger artists, among them Carl-Harry Stålhane and Hertha Bengtsson. Nylund was a dedicated functionalist, who brought ideas of democratizing stoneware and creating beautiful, qualitative and affordable everyday items for the people to Rörstand in the mid-1920s. The factory had at the time lost its former leading market position, but Nylund’s efforts gave it a great reboot. He designed ceramic kitchenware...

Two Blue and Red Arabia Finland Stock Jars, 1949-1954
By Arabia
Located in Delft, NL
Two blue and red Arabia Finland stock jars, 1949-1954 The lidded jars are stackable, by placing the round on the square The porcelain jars has a lid made of strong solid plastic Marked on the bottom, used during 1949-1954 The measurements are 20 and 13 cm high, 9,5 cm square and 9,8 cm diagonal The weight in total is 1253 gram In 1873 the Finnish factory Arabia started off with the manufacture of porcelain and earthenware on a plot of land carrying the same name on the northern outskirts of Helsinki. Being a subsidiary of the Swedish ceramics factory Rörstrand, it was up to Arabia to serve the Russian market in a period of Boom. After the successful World Fair, which was held in Paris in 1900, a period of economic decline began and demand from Russia and North America for porcelain and earthenware from Finland started to slacken off. At the end of WW I, Arabia was passed into Finnish hands and a period of prosperity began. In 1929, the factory took over parent company Rörstrand. After the economic depression in 1932, demand for earthenware and porcelain collapsed and the company started to Pioneer by automatising the production process and improving efficiency. During WW II the factory had expanded enormously and employed some 2,000 workers. Kaj Franck was hired in 1945 who designed and introduced the 'Kilta' range in the early 50s, a leading example of the modernisation process, involving new concepts relating to kitchen ware that a household might need. This took Arabia into the realm of modern communication and advisory work which included educating the public, consultation and press services. In addition to the Kilta range, other new products came on the market including 'AR-Heini' (Kaarina Aho...
