Sunset, Rockport Harbor
By Emile Albert Gruppe

Gruppé (1860-1940), Emile enjoyed a long and successful career that spanned over six decades. In 1925, Gruppé began spending summers in Gloucester. He established a studio on Rocky Neck in East Gloucester where he taught plein-air classes. In 1942 —along with Bridgman, Carlson, Miller and Chapman—he established the Gruppé Summer School, which he continued to operate until 1970.Gruppé’s works hang in many colleges and museums: Smith College, Silberman College in Montreal, the University of Idaho, the Los Angeles Museum, the San Antonio Museum and the de Cordova Museum. Antique Large Persian Serapi Carpet, c. 1900
Located in San Francisco, CA
Antique Large Persian Serapi Carpet Rug, c. 1900 Serapi rugs and carpets were woven in the Heriz district of Northwest Persia starting in the Mid-19th century in response to a great increase in demand for rugs internationally. Prior to that, there were no rugs woven (in Persia) for export that exhibited this stylized drawing of plant and flower forms. The lower knot density and thicker pile became the standard for these rugs, which lent to a less formal aesthetic that remains popular today. The neutral ground color of the border is unusual and sets of the other colors in an interesting way. The use of natural dyes in the Heriz workshops prevailed well into the 20th century, setting them apart from city workshops, which began to embrace synthetic dyes as early as the turn of the century. What was once one of the least expensive...
