A wonderful Autumn landscape likely of the Hudson River Valley by the revered American artist William Louis Sonntag (1822-1900). Sonntag was born near Pittsburgh, PA and moved to Cincinnati, OH in the 1840’s to study art. He studied for a brief time with G. Frankenstein at the Cincinnati Academy of Fine Art and his idealized paintings of American wilderness and visionary paintings of imagined European ruins were commercially successful. He traveled twice to Europe in the 1850’s to improve his skills, eventually settling in New York City. He joined the National Academy of Design, where he exhibited his works for forty years. His mature works identify him with the Hudson River School of landscape painters. A romantic and naturalistic painter of his surroundings, Sonntag also created idealized paintings of Roman ruins, recalling his European trips of earlier years.

In 1893, Jonas moved to New York City, where he took evening classes at Cooper Union, the National Academy of Design and the Art Students League while working designing fabric patterns for a textile company to raise money to support his education. After the completion of his education, Lie spent most of his summers along the New England coast and Canada. Here he would paint bright, impressionistic harbor scenes and rocky, coastal views, which he would exhibit regularly. A fine tonalist landscape by American artist J. Francis Murphy (1853-1921). Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, he moved to Chicago in 1868, where his father was employed in the shipping industry. In Chicago, Murphy began working as a scene painter in a local theatre and was quickly promoted to lead his co-workers. Largely self-taught, his only training consisted of a few classes at the Chicago Academy of Design. There he became friends with Emil Carlsen and Theodore Robinson, and in 1873, Academy members elected him an Associate; a few weeks later, he became an Academician. Frederick Dickinson Williams was born into a patrician household in Boston, Massachusetts and attended the prestigious Boston Latin School before entering Harvard University in 1846. After graduation and until 1874, Williams taught drawing and painting in the Boston Public School System as a Professor of Drawing until 1874. Williams and his wife, the former Lucia M. Hunt, of Newburyport, relocated to Paris, France, where both studied the new French art and painted landscapes and genre scenes in their studio until 1888, when Lucia died in Paris.
Williams returned to the United States and settled in Boston, opening a studio in late 1888. He continued to paint in the Boston area with regular trips to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and other wilderness areas where he produced a large body of French-inspired landscapes in the manner of Corot and other contemporary French painters. In 1904, a serious fire in his Boston studio destroyed all of his inventory, including a number of award-winning canvases from his Paris sojourn. Despite this significant loss, he continued to paint. Tod Lindenmuth (1885-1976). Lindenmuth was born in Allentown, Pennsylvania, and later worked in Provincetown and Rockport, Massachusetts, with a home in St. Augustine. A founder of the Provincetown Art Association and one of the original Provincetown Printers, Lindenmuth was a semi-abstract painter and graphic artist who did much to promote modernist styles and was well known for his modernist, semi-abstract and marine subject paintings. Lindenmuth studied with Robert Henri and was a member of the Salmagundi Club and the Rockport Art Association. He was also active in Provincetown until 1941, and then retired to Florida in the 1960s, having spent his winters there since the 1930s.
