About the Item
A fine impressionist pastel painting of a ballerina by American artist Louis Kronberg (1872-1965). The painter, dealer and art advisor Louis Kronberg was born in Boston, Massachusetts. He studied at the Arts Student League in New York and at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts School, where he was influenced by Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. At the Museum School, Kronberg won a Longfellow Traveling Scholarship, which gave him the opportunity to continue his studies at the Academie Julian in Paris from 1894-1896. There he studied under Benjamin Constant, Jean Paul Laurens and took private lessons with Raphael Collin. In Paris, Kronberg saw and admired Edouard Degas’s paintings of ballet dancers, a theme he explored throughout his career. A member of Boston Art club, Guild of Boston Artists, Salmaguni Club Coply Society and many others, Kronberg also acted as an art advisor and buyer to Isabella Stewart Gardener.
