West Texas Plains
By Kristin Moore
Located in New Orleans, LA
In this new series of paintings, Moore explores themes of wanderlust and memory. From glowing neon signage, to sprawling landscapes and unique architectural elements, this exhibition is a visual road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas. These paintings stem from Moore’s personal travels and open up a collective conversation about wanderlust. In these works, she revisits her former home of Los Angeles to shed a new light in juxtaposition to the bare California desert and the opulence of Las Vegas. This exhibition reflects a shift to new subject matter as well as a new artistic chapter that has been evolving within her work over the last two years. Moore’s process has progressed to become larger in scale, and more delicate in detail. This series of paintings offer trompe de l’oeil moments in combination with gestural brush stokes that reveal the artists hand. With a more increased focus on architectural elements, this exhibition amplifies features that were often muted in her earlier landscapes. With the exhibition title “All Those Who Wander”, Moore is leaving an option for the viewer to place themselves in the wanderlust narrative, or to observe it from afar. Moore believes we have a collective desire to explore and, in turn, we often daydream about our travels. This often creates a dream-like quality to our memories which results in a romanticized narrative within our minds. The reality of a place often doesn’t matter, it’s the memory of our experience there that sticks with us. We often like to sit a little longer with the most romantic and the most opulent visuals we have in our minds. Beginning with Los Angeles noir, the viewer is introduced to old Hollywood architecture blended with images reflecting the known edginess of the city. Familiar Hollywood landmarks are explored in a new light and we are left with a subtle sense of nostalgia as the viewer moves through the works. The bright desert landscapes lead into the “in between”; these are the lands that are on the way to somewhere else. Just as important as the beginning or the end, the transitional parts of a road trip often leave space for the most enriching moments of pause and reflection. The series finds a finishing point with the bright, opulent Neon Boneyard...

Ode to Munch's 'The Scream'
By E2 - Kleinveld & Julien
Located in New Orleans, LA
Inspired by Edvard Munch's "The Scream", 1893 Edition 1 of 5 with 2APs “Ode to Munch’s ‘The Scream’” depicts a non-binary subject trapped in an infinite scream against a New Orleans backdrop. This piece represents the silent pain of gender dysphoria constantly experienced by non-binary people as they traverse a binary world that would rather ignore their existence entirely. The artists say of their work... "Everything Changes, the latest phase of our ongoing series In Empathy We Trust, presents odes to iconic images from the Modern and Contemporary art periods. Our artistic process during Everything Changes was heavily influenced by the COVID-19 pandemic and the inescapable upheaval brought about by this once-in-a-lifetime event. This major societal shift alongside ongoing social unrest compelled us to further explore the distorted realities permeating American culture and, consequently, veiling oppression of marginalized communities. With lockdown restrictions disrupting our usual process of gathering for photoshoots, we also began playing with new approaches for our work. As a result, our latest iteration marks a new technique exploration, with completely over-painting atop of select prints, adding an additional layer of distortion to an already-altered reality. The title for this show takes inspiration from one of our favorite Frida Kahlo quotes: “Nothing is absolute. Everything changes, everything moves, everything revolves, everything flies and goes away.” The pandemic fostered a collective understanding of just how malleable and fragile our reality is. Our perceptions, our personal routines, and our culture as a whole – these realities are never guaranteed stasis, and the only way to move forward is to evolve, both as artists and individuals. The pieces in this show invite viewers to embrace the inevitability of change and the natural discomfort of re-examining their expectations of how a work of art – and by extension, a culture – should look. The process of creating an e2 image has always involved intense collaboration, and the images here would not be possible without stellar teamwork. We would especially like to thank Cameron Wood for his extensive digital post-production and our wonderful models." ⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯ As the photographic duo E2, New Orleans natives Elizabeth Kleinveld and Epaul Julien seek to remake images from art history to reflect their own experience of the contemporary world. Tackling icons from the great masters like Botticelli, Manet, Rembrandt, and Van Eyck, they recast instantly familiar images in a distinctly modern manner, breaking them free from centuries of historical context and placing them firmly in the present. Kleinveld and Julien...

Aoum II by Auguste Herbin
By Auguste Herbin
Located in New Orleans, LA
Auguste Herbin 1882-1960 French Aoum II Signed and dated 'herbin 1944' (lower right); titled "aoum" 2 (lower left) Oil on canvas This bold and vivid abstract oil on canvas was painted by French painter Auguste Herbin, a pioneer in popularizing Modernist abstraction. Over his expansive nearly 60-year career, Herbin rubbed shoulders with art history greats from Pablo Picasso to Georges Braque before honing his personal and innovative style. Entitled Aoum II, the painting stands apart for its daring color palette and crisp composition. Painted in 1944, Aoum II embodies Herbin’s fully-formed artistic aesthetic and stylistic tenets. Only two years prior to its creation, Herbin developed his “alphabet plastique,” a synergistic visual language of color and form that he described in detail in his published book L’art non-figuratif non-objectif. Though the artist was highly cerebral in his process of creating art, one does not need to perfectly understand his principles to feel Aoum II's magnetism. The geometric shapes visible in the composition — primarily fragmented triangles and circles — are rendered in bold pinks, blues and yellows on a deep black background. His tiered application of color creates a natural three-register visual effect as if to tell a story from the apex of the form to its denouement. Auguste Herbin began his artistic training at the École des Beaux-Arts de Lille before moving to Paris in 1901. In the early years of his career, he experimented with a variety of styles, exhibiting Post-Impressionistic works at the Salon des Indépendants in 1906 and Fauvist paintings at the Salon d'Automne in 1907. After a brief Cubist period following his introduction to Pablo Picasso, Georges Braque and Otto...

Work for Justice
Located in New Orleans, LA
The persistent woodpeckers illustrate the diligence and energy necessary to achieve justice for the oppressed. Their hammering motion represents the relentless message of justice. The lotus flower is symbolic of perseverance. A medieval king once affixed yellow Scotch flowers to his helmet to aid his troops in following him into battle. Thereafter, the flower served as a call to action.
