Available today, this Mid-Century Modern Credenza in Hardwood with Brass finishes designed by Jean Gillon in the sixties in Brazil is the FIND of the year.
The credenza has a rectangular structure made of Brazilian Rosewood, known as Jacaranda, with two main legs and two support legs on each side. It has five large drawers and four doors with shelves inside. The brass finishes are located in the joints, fringes and keys.
There are few reasons why this credenza is one-of-a-kind: First, the high end wood work. This piece was commissioned for a private residence in Sao Paulo and it shows. The joints, the wood carving, the smooth curves in the drawers, even the hidden toothpick support legs are superbly finished. Second, the rosewood is of the finest quality which can be seen in the wood veins, the grain and smoothness of the wood. Lastly, design. This piece has all the components of a true Brazilian Modern piece with straight almost brutalist silhouettes softened with smooth curves (seen in the drawers and edges) that resemble Modernist architecture from Brasilia of the sixties.
Owning a Jean Gillon piece like this is not just about acquiring a beautiful piece of furniture; it's also about possessing a part of Brazilian design history and culture. This credenza is a testament to Jean Gillon’s creativity and vision, and it would make an excellent addition to any interior space that values and appreciates the significance of this design.

This rare piece was designed by Ando Moveis, a high-end wood joinery for a private residence in Sao Paulo. With this piece, Ando uses the Caviuna of light blond appearance with darker veins to form geometric patterns that offer a contrast giving charm and lightness. This stunning Mid-Century Modern black lacquer sideboard was realized by the legendary designer James Mont in the United States circa 1950. The hind legs of the piece are straight, volumetric rectangular forms, while the front legs have two L-shaped embellishments shooting out from the central stem- offering additional support and obliquely recalling elements of historical antique Chinese design motifs. The center of the piece is recessed, while the two sides are fitted with doors that open to reveal recessed shelves on the left and drawers on the right. The front of the doors offer traditional Kantharos Greek urns with stylized handles culminating in Greek Key forms (a whimsical, tongue in cheek play on a classical motif). Additionally, there is a geometric border at the apex of the piece, suggesting a deconstructed Greek key motif. The piece is fitted with a smoked mirror top that offers a striking contrast to the black lacquer throughout the piece.
Mont was renowned for assimilating elements of classical, orientalist, and Art Deco design into a modern sensibility, using the most luxuriant materials available, a style he termed "Chinese Modern." Mont's pieces filled the interiors of the "who's who" in midcentury America, from East Coast Mafia tycoons to Hollywood's elite. This iconic and dramatic piece exemplifies the qualities that collectors treasure in Mont's practice. One-of-a-kind midcentury Italian dresser/credenza by the Architect Giacomo Sinopoli, in rare organic solid palm wood, with a Chinoiserie style, high-quality execution with a central door, and four drawers on each side, decorated with handles that are hand-cast bronze sculptures of oriental inspiration, entirely edged with brass bands, clad in figured bamboo veneer and superbly finished also on the back so that it can float in a room and serve as a divider.
