The title is a play on Tempus fugit is a Latin phrase, usually translated into English as "time flies". The expression comes from line 284 of book 3 of Vergil's Georgics, where is appears as FVGIT INREPARABILE TEMPVS: "it escapes, irretrievable time".

Gordon Waverly Gilkey was a printmaker, teacher, collector, and curator. He graduated from Albany College, which is now Lewis & Clark College, in 1933 and obtained a Master of Fine Arts degree from the University of Oregon in 1936. He served in World War II in a special division dedicated to locating and returning art confiscated by the Nazis and to confiscating Nazi propaganda.
Gilkey spent the majority of his career teaching printmaking at Oregon State University. He amassed a large collection of prints, primarily by trading work with his colleagues. When he retired in 1978, Gilkey became curator of prints and drawings at the Portland Art Museum and professor and printmaker in residence at the Museum Art School, which is now known as the Pacific Northwest College of Art. Over the course of many years, he donated more than 10,000 prints and drawings from his personal collection to the Museum. Gilkey was crucial in building awareness for and appreciation of works on paper, and was instrumental in creating proper storage and viewing spaces for the graphic arts. Adja Yunkers
(1900-1983)
A major twentieth century abstract painter and printmaker, Adja Yunkers studied art in Leningrad, Berlin, Paris and London. His first solo exhibition took place in Hamburg in 1921. For a period of fourteen years, Yunkers lived and worked in Paris. At the outbreak of World War II (1939), he moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where he edited and published the arts magazines, ARS and Creation.
Adja Yunkers settled permanently in the United States in 1947. During the following years important exhibitions of his woodcuts, lithographs and paintings were held at the Smithsonian Institute, the Corcoran Gallery, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.
The prints of Adja Yunkers are today included in the following collections: The Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the Hamburg Kunsthalle, the Stockholm National Gallery, the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Corcoran Museum, Harvard University and the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

This earlier (1966) sculpture of the same title is the inspiration of the portfolio. The sculpture is in the collection of the Albright Knox Museum. The screenprints follow the neon of the sculpture.
Greek-born American sculptor Chryssa—who went by her first name professionally—died on December 23, 2013, reports Margalit Fox of the New York Times. Born in 1933 in Athens, Chryssa Vardea-Mavromichali grew up during the Nazi occupation of Greece. After studying at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière, Paris, and the California School of Fine Arts, San Francisco, she began incorporating neon into her fragmentary, text-based work. Her first solo exhibition in New York was held at the Betty Parsons Gallery in 1961, which was quickly followed by shows at the Guggenheim, New York; Leo Castelli Gallery, New York; and the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis. Her work is part of collections of major museums, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
