This office by Robert Charroy bears the marks of its use, and for good reason, it has equipped the Jean Zay university residence, for which it was designed. The patina of time therefore takes on all its charm, with a touch of nostalgia for some. This piece of furniture tells the story of an exceptional context, that of the student housing project launched in the emergency of post-war reconstruction, in 1948, and which has evolved to become the most ambitious university pilot program in Europe. In 1954, he offered to accommodate 3,000 students in functionally furnished accommodation and common areas, thanks to two competitions organized in 1955 and 1956. A very rare copy of the already lesser-known model R05 from the hand of Pierre Chapo. Almost all of his designs that have seen the light of day and have been completed in the Chapo workshop are made of solid elm. Different types of hardwood were used in the workshop to create prototypes. For this R05 dressing table, which has the title “coiffeuse a sept tiroirs” in the original catalog, a dark walnut wood has been used that has acquired a beautiful warm, golden patina over the years. The starting point of the basis of Chapo's designs is always based on the golden ratio and follows the strict principles of form, function, and material. With this R05 we see, among other things, the well-known dovetail joints and notches on the ends. Seven handle-less drawers of different sizes each show a beautiful color shade of walnut wood. Gold streaks alternate with dark blond lines. Precisely because the regular designs are made of elm, it is all the more special that a completely solid walnut has been used here. This desk is one of the last pieces designed by the greatest designer of the French Reconstruction: René Gabriel (1899-1950).
René Gabriel (1899 - 1950) is a precursor of French industrial design. He was one of the first to create, as early as the 1930s, economical mass-produced furniture combining aestheticism, robustness and sobriety, a source of inspiration for a whole generation of future designers.
A student at the Germain Pilon School and then at the National School of Decorative Arts, René Gabriel began as a domino maker by designing and producing his own wallpapers, and then made his mark as a decorative artist in most of the salons and international exhibitions of the inter-war period. In 1927, he began his research into the creation of mass-produced furniture and proposed a piece of furniture composed of juxtaposable and superposable elements. He studied an economical version that he presented in 1934 at the Salon des arts ménagers under the name of RG elements.
Another major turning point came in 1944, when the Ministry of Reconstruction and Urban Planning commissioned him to create emergency furniture. A fervent advocate of furniture for all, René Gabriel designed numerous models for disaster victims by establishing close ties with industry. He also collaborated with Auguste Perret...
