"The Outing Magazine" Last Rose of Summer Original Cover Illustration

The Outing Magazine commissioned Parrish to provide a cover illustration for their 1899 Last Rose of Summer edition (published December 1899). In the poster, Maxfield used his own face and figure to portray a youth in Grecian costume examining a rose he holds in his hand. The figure is shown sitting below one of the massive oaks on the artist’s property, flanked by two plaster lions the artist had moulded in his studio.
The depiction harks back to the 1805 poem by the Irish poet, Thomas Moore:
‘Tis the last rose of summer,
Left blooming alone;
All her lovely companions
Are faded and gone;
No flower of her kindred,
No rose-bud is nigh,
To reflect back her blushes
Or give sigh for sigh!
I’ll not leave thee, thou lone one...

J. C. Leyendecker’s illustrations and advertisements fueled a collective visual memory for the early 20th century American public. Over the course of his career, Leyendecker created 322 covers for The Saturday Evening Post, as well as numerous other magazines, including Collier’s and Ladies’ Home Journal. The only illustrator to eclipse his fame was Norman Rockwell and Rockwell was quick to credit Leyendecker as his mentor and inspiration. This previously unknown work was recently discovered at a small country auction in South Carolina. It is likely an early work by Leyendecker, dating to circa 1900. The sinuous reddish orange flames emitted by the slain dragon recall the steam and vapors found in his later work, including an advertisement for Ivory Soap and a Thanksgiving cover for The Saturday Evening Post. The chiseled features and elegant expressions of the two knights and Christ are similar to those of his many successful advertising campaigns and illustrations. Kernan's Final Post Cover
In the Eleventh Olympiad, Joseph Francis Kernan’s final cover for The Saturday Evening Post, a sprinter channels the speed and power of an eagle while preparing to represent the United States at the 1936 Olympic Games in Berlin. Kernan created 26 covers for The Saturday Evening Post between 1924 and 1936.
Kernan’s depiction of the athlete was a fitting conclusion for the artist’s Post commissions, as much of his life’s work celebrated sportsmen and outdoor life. This now iconic cover held such impact that it was published twice – first on August 8, 1936, and later for the July / August 1996 issue to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the modern Olympic Games that took place in Atlanta, Georgia.
Jesse Owens and the 1936 Summer Olympics
The 1936 Summer Olympics were held from August 1 to 16 in Berlin, Germany, which was then under Adolf Hitler’s Nazi regime. The track and field competition garnered special attention that year, as Jesse Owens, the African American sprinter and long jumper, took home a historic four gold medals. Owens took center stage at the Games, setting new records in the 100- and 200-meter sprints, the long jump, and helped his team win a record-setting 4 x 100-meter relay.
Jesse Owens and Ralph Metcalfe were not initially scheduled to compete in the relay. On the morning of the event, it was announced that Owens and Metcalfe would take the places of Marty Glickman and Sam Stoller, the only Jews on the U.S. track team. Glickman later blamed the controversial decision on the U.S. Olympic Committee president Avery Brundage and track coach Dean Cromwell, accusing them of appeasing the Nazi regime’s anti-semitism.
The magnitude of Owens’ achievements as a black athlete was multiplied by the fact that Hitler had unsuccessfully attempted to use the Summer Olympics to validate his theories of Aryan racial superiority. As the first Games to be televised, and with radio broadcasts reaching 41 countries, Hitler envisioned the Olympics as a way to disseminate Nazi propaganda. The German Olympic...

The Post described, “One night Art Editor Stuart was having a party. His three boys came downstairs four times and were conducted back up by their mother. The next time they came down, Papa Stuart waxed excited, firmly conveyed them aloft himself, and they did not show up again. Stuart was warmly congratulated on his success as a father. When the party broke up, the youngest lad was found asleep on the stairs. Stuart claims that the older ones never did come down again, but this was probably because they merely went to sleep in their beds from natural causes. Biography:
Daniel Content was born of Dutch parents and grew up in New York City. He attended New Eutriek High School in Brooklyn, NY. He studied under Dean Cornwell at the Pratt Institute as well as attending the Art Students League. Mr. Content worked as a freelance artist for about thirty years. He illustrated for such magazines as Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Readers Digest, and McCall's. In 1928 he illustrated the Windermere Series printing of Robin Hood. During World War II he traveled with the USO to Burma and India entertaining the service men with personal sketches. In the late 1950s he was an Art Director for Benton & Bowles in NYC. He also taught at the workshop School of Advertising Art. Mr. Content continued his sculpting and painting long after retirement. Some of his work can be found at Society of Illustrators in their permanent Museum.
