A highly detailed India ink drawing with watercolor and Gouache. Each intricate circle and line is hand drawn to create a matrix within which the artist colors the scene to a fine realistic conclusion. Aladdin smiles at the Lantern that has given him his wishes, wealth and knowledge. Signed and dated "Ben Black 85" lower right. Image, 17"H x 27"L (portions of the work flow into the full mat length and width, which is: 20"H x 30"L). We have included a lower resolution image (#1) taken in subdued light to show the full range of colors we were unable to capture due to the extensive fine India ink designs throughout.
Ben Black was born in Boston, he graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art 1947. He served in World War 2. He was an art director at one of Boston's leading advertising firms, later opened his own studio where his works were included in The New Yorker, Saturday Evening Post, Reader's Digest, establishing himself as a leading American Illustrator. He had many solo and group exhibitions throughout New England and his work is collected throughout the world. Nancy B Westfall (American, b. 1970) began studying at the age of 14 with renowned Hungarian artist Magda Mader, who focused on perspective, discipline, and respect of materials. Westfall continued her art studies through college, earning a Bachelor’s of Fine Art from the University of Georgia in 1993. Her studies took her abroad to Cortona Italy and introduced her to color theory, which has since greatly infuenced her use and application of color. Following her undergraduate years, Westfall apprenticed with several professional artists, until returning to graduate school to pursue a Masters of Art from East Carolina University in 1996. During her graduate program, Nancy B studied with Paul Hartley.

Born in Texas, Jean Hyson (American, 1928-2023) is best known for her modernist, sharp edge, paintings. Hyson attended the Art Student League in New York with George Grosz, Yaso Kumiyoshi and William Baziotes and Beaux Artes, Paris, France from 1954-59. She was an Artist in Residence and Instructor at the California College of Arts and Crafts, Oakland from 1970-1974. Her work is held in the Oakland Art Museum, Oakland California, Santa Barbara Museum of Art, Santa Barbara, California and the California Container Corp. of America, Chicago, Illinois.
Jean Hyson and her then-husband Jacques Fabert (who typically painted under the name “Jean Faber Himbert”) were an important force within the midcentury San Francisco art scene. Her work has been featured in countless Bay Area gallery and museum exhibitions—including SFMOMA, the de Young, and the Legion of Honor—and is in numerous public and private collections.

Bay Area Figurative / Bay Area Feminist Art Movement artist, Patricia Gren-Hayes, studied at Winnipeg Public Art School in 1950. She received early recognition in Museum and Gallery competitions and exhibitions and was awarded a Special Education in Art recognition by the Winnipeg Museum of Fine Art, and was awarded a scholarship to the Banff College of Fine Art. Further studies were at The University of Manitoba.
She was a Member of Winnipeg Free Press Sketch Club and was a Cartoonist and paste-up for a French-English bi-weekly, in Eastern Canada;
She studied outdoor impressionism in New York in 1960; in 1962, attended The California College of Arts and Crafts, and in 1976 B.A., U.C. Berkeley where she studied under Elmer Bischoff, David Simpson, Joan Brown, Felix Ruvolo, Yolanda Lopez and Vincent Perez...
