Dorit Levi was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1952, her Yemenite upbringing and culture playing an important role in her art. Her talent enabled her to study at the prestigious Wizo France Art School in her native city, where she had the great fortune to learn from one of Israel's greatest artists, Edwin Salomon. The artist's personal experiences in Uganda, Africa where she lived for several years, are reflected in many of her paintings. The vast savannas translate into the warm colors of backdrops, and the flow and movement of her vibrant figures are inspired by Uganda's colorful markets and the people in embroidered garb. Dorit's works are remarkable in her use of gold leaf and the enormous attention to detail and complex composition. Each time one looks at a Dorit Levi painting new aspects and new configurations are discovered. More than anything, the collectors of her contemporary artworks remark on the feeling of joy, optimism and peace they inspire. The influences of Bolivian artist Rodo Boulanger, as well as cubist Pablo Picasso, Fernand Leger, and the cubism of Georges Braque are a background for the distinct signature of Levi's lyrical style, forged of her strong artistic vision and of a wealth of personal experiences. Bernard Harmon was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1935. Harmon was primarily a portrait painter and a well loved teacher in the Philadelphia area. A graduate of the Philadelphia Museum School and Temples Tyler School of Art, Harmon traveled extensively in Europe and South America. Beloved by many, Harmon taught in the Philadelphia School District for 32 of his 54 years of life. Beginning his career as an art teacher at West Philadelphia High School, in the early 1960s he became one of the district's artists in residence, traveling from school to school to demonstrate for students how an artist works. Returning to the classroom, Harmon joined the art department at Central High School where he taught for 14 years and became an innovator in art curriculum, developing a program offering advanced placement art classes to gifted students. In his final years Harmon became a supervisor, mentoring teachers and overseeing programs in the Philadelphia school systems District #1. During his short life Harmon taught collage preparatory art classes at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, summer classes at the University of the Arts, and a Saturday program for gifted children at Drexel University. Among Harmon's portraits were commissioned by Philadelphia Jazz organist Jimmy Smith and Mayor Richardson Dilworth. Bernard Harmon was active in promoting African American Artist throughout his life time. He organized many early shows such as the "Afro American Artists 1800 - 1969" at the Museum of the Philadelphia Civic Center in 1969. Part of the Ecole De Paris The term "School of Paris" was used in 1925 by André Warnod (fr) to refer to the many foreign-born artists who had migrated to Paris.
School of Paris artists were progressively marginalized. Beginning in 1935 art publications no longer wrote about Marc Chagall, just magazines for Jewish audiences, and by June 1940 when the Vichy government took power, School of Paris artists could no longer exhibit in Paris at all.
The artists working in Paris between World War I and World War II experimented with various styles including Cubism, Orphism, Surrealism and Dada. Foreign and French artists working in Paris included Jean Arp, Joan Miró, Constantin Brâncuși, Raoul Dufy, Tsuguharu Foujita, artists from Belarus like Michel Kikoine, Pinchus Kremegne, and Jacques Lipchitz, the Polish artist Marek Szwarc and others such as Russian-born prince Alexis Arapoff. A significant subset, the Jewish artists, came to be known as the Jewish School of Paris or the School of Montparnasse. The "core members were almost all Jews, and the resentment expressed toward them by French critics in the 1930s was unquestionably fueled by anti-Semitism." One account points to the 1924 Salon des Indépendants, which decided to separate the works of French-born artists from those by immigrants; in response critic Roger Allard (fr) referred to them as the School of Paris. Provenance: The estate of D. D. Ryan (1928-2007), noted fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar, an associate of Halston and a regular on best-dressed lists! Another widely appreciated achievement is her association with the creation of Eloise, the fictional little girl who lives at the Plaza Hotel.
Eloise began as a character that Kay Thompson, a cabaret singer, portrayed to amuse her friends, of whom Ms. Ryan was one. Ms. Ryan urged her to write a book, put her together with Hilary Knight, the illustrator, and never stopped pushing her to finish the job. The result was “Eloise,” published in 1955 and a best seller the next year, and its popular sequels.
“The book would never have existed without D. D. Never,” Mr. Knight said in an interview Thursday. “She would have just dropped it and gone on to something else.”
Beyond her historic Eloise moment, Ms. Ryan thrived at the crossroads of New York’s fashion and artistic worlds, seeming to make a statement every time she dressed, almost always in clothes she made herself, always recognizable with her famous precisely stylized eyebrows.
Her first job in Manhattan was as an assistant to the photographer Richard Avedon; she was photo editor at Harper’s Bazaar under the legendary editor Diana Vreeland, and she designed the costumes for Stephen Sondheim’s 1970 Broadway musical “Company.”

This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida.
Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien.
In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony.
In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks.
