The portrait-painter and etcher William Nicholson was born in Ovingham-on-Tyne, Northumberland, on Christmas Day 1781. His family transferred to Newcastle when his father was appointed Headmaster of the city's Grammar School. At an early age, though, Nicholson appears to have moved to Hull where he made his artistic debut, painting miniatures of officers garrisoned there. He was almost entirely self-taught, learning his craft through the close study of artworks in private and public galleries. He subsequently returned to Newcastle where he received many commissions to paint portraits of the old families of Northumberland. In 1808, he began to exhibit at the Royal Academy, continuing to do so until 1822. By 1814, Nicholson, whose mother was a Scot, had moved to Edinburgh where he set up as a miniaturist and painter in oils. Soon, however, he began to specialize in watercolour portraits. Early subjects included the actor Daniel Terry and the poet and novelist James Hogg. In 1818 he began to publish a series of Portraits of Eminent Scotsmen, etched from his own portraits and those of other painters. Besides Scott and Hogg, the subjects included the writers Robert Burns, John Wilson ('Christopher North'), and Lord Jeffrey, the painters Sir Henry Raeburn, the divines Alexander Carlyle and Alexander Cameron, the engineer James Watt, the architect John Playfair, and the song-collector and composer George Thomson...

This Italian landscape is an oil on canvas, framed behind glass in its original gallery frame, by Susan Isabel Dacre. A superb painting, painted circa 1888. Dacre was an early member of the Feminist movement and a member of the Manchester arts community. She travelled with Lord Leighton and exhibited widely. This work shows influences of early British impressionism. The painting depicts an Italian landscape with a road sweeping around a hill with dwellings and trees. The brushwork and palette are superb. An excellent example of a 19th century women artists work.

Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 13 inches by 10 inches. canvas in original excellent condition.
Housed in an original gilt frame 20 inches by 17 inches approx. and in good condition.
Susan Isabel Dacre (1844 – 1933) was an English female artist of the Victorian era. She was born in Leamington, Warwickshire, and was educated in Salford. For the decade of 1858–68 she lived in Paris. After a winter in Italy (1869), she returned to Paris, and was present during the Franco-Prussian War and the Paris Commune. She returned to England in 1871 and began studying art at the Manchester School of Art, where she won the Queen's Prize in 1875. She began a lifelong friendship with fellow artist Annie Swynnerton; the two women pursued their art studies in Rome and Paris between 1874 and 1880. Around 1872, Lord Leighton dictated notes and observations on his methods of painting and composing his pictures to Susan Dacre during a stay on the island of Capri. From 1877-1880 she was in Paris at the Académie Julian with a fellow - pupil Marie Bashkirtseff...

A stunning 1891 exhibited oil painting by British listed artist George Sherwood Hunter. This is a glorious British Impressionist painting from his travels in Northern France. It depicts “A Breton Courtship” in blue hot summer tones and is married well with the French Barbizon frame. The couple sit opposite each other, on either side of the road they are travelling together. A fantastic painting. This is a large oil on canvas by the Scottish artist who is one of my favourite artists of the period. George Sherwood Hunter was a well travelled artist and he painted throughout Europe. He is represented in many public collections.
Provenance. Exhibited: Royal Society of British Artists 1891.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 20 inches unframed and in good condition.
Housed in a fine Barbizon gilt gallery frame, 40 inches by 30 inches framed. Gallery condition.
George Sherwood Hunter (1846-1914) - was born in Aberdeen in Scortland on 30 May 1846. He first visited Newlyn in the 1890s, staying at Belle View in 1897. In 1902 he settled at the Malt House, Newlyn, with his wife Constance. Hunter had a studio in Bateman’s Meadow, where the Forbes School of Painting was situated, and Hunter assisted with tuition at the School in its early days. Sir Charles Forbes, 1st Baronet (1774–1849) was a Scottish politician, of Newe and Edinglassie, Aberdeenshire. Forbes was the son of the Rev. George Forbes of Lochell. He was a descendant of Alexander Forbes of Kinaldie and Pitsligo, and was in 1833 served heir male in general to Alexander Forbes, 3rd lord Forbes of Pitsligo, father of Alexander Forbes, 4th Lord Forbes of Pitsligo, attainted in 1745.
Forbes was of a bluff but kindly nature, diffident as to his own merits, of a straightforward and manly character. On the death of his uncle in 1821 Forbes succeeded to the entailed estates of the Forbeses of Newe, and was created a baronet by patent in 1823.[1] He married in 1811. His daughter, Elizabeth, married General, Lord James Hay, second son of the seventh Marquess of Tweeddale.

Artist Bio:
George Dunlop Leslie RA (London 2 July 1835 – 21 February 1921 Lindfield, Sussex) was a British genre painter, author and illustrator. He was born into an artistic family; his father was the notable genre painter Charles Robert Leslie RA, and his uncle Robert Leslie was a marine artist. He studied art first at Cary's Art Academy, then from 1854 at the Royal Academy. His first exhibition at the Academy was in 1859, and he showed his work every year thereafter. He became an Associate (ARA) in 1868 and a full Royal Academician (RA) in 1876.George Dunlop Leslie lived early on in St John's Wood (London), and was part of the St John's Wood Clique, a group of artists who favoured light-hearted genre subjects. From 1884–1901 he was resident at "Riverside", St. Leonard's Lane, Wallingford, Oxfordshire. His sister Mary Leslie (1833–1907), also an artist, lived at "Cromwell Lodge" next door. Fellow artist, James Hayllar, was also a resident of the village and they painted a portrait of Queen Victoria together for her Golden Jubilee in 1887. From 1906 he lived at "Compton House" in Lindfield, SussexHis early works, such as Matilda (1860) showed the strong influence of the Pre-Raphaelites, but he settled into a more academic, aesthetic, style of painting with the aim of showing "pictures from the sunny side of English domestic life". He often used children as subjects and his work was praised by John Ruskin for its portrayal of the "sweet quality of English girlhood". One of his pictures, This is the Way we Wash our Clothes, was used as a poster in an advertising campaign for soap. Despite its apparently trivial subject matter, however, Leslie's work was highly regarded by critics of the time.In 1889 during his time at Riverside house in Wallingford Leslie is credited with painting four angel murals in St Leonards Church.Leslie was also an author and had several books published. Our river (1888), Letters to Marco (1893) and Riverside letters (1896) were all illustrated by him in black and white, and based on personal observations of life and nature in his local area.
