Swiss academic painter 19th VAUTIER Interior Oil on canvas The spinner woman

About the Item

Benjamin VAUTIER (Attributed to) Morges (Switzerland), 1829 – Dusseldörf, 1898 Oil on canvas 43 x 37 cm (58 x 52 cm with the frame) Beautiful 19th century frame in carved and gilded wood Good condition (relining but only one tear) Our painting may be a copy or a reduced version of the same painting by the same painter. Theres is actually another version of our painting signed and dated 1858 that was sold at Sotheby's in 2004 (sold 39.000 euros). The comparaison shows that the quality of painting is similar, drawing and colors and with many remarquable and fine details caracteristic of the miniaturist art of Vautier and difficult to copy. The dimensions also are not the same (85x75cm for the latter painting) and usually a copy is of the same size. Even if not signed, we thus believe that this not a copy but a another version of the same composition, smaller, and we attribute this painting to Benjamin Vautier. Even if the painting is lined, it seems to be only because of one tear at the bottom of the picture. Benjamin Vautier was a Swiss painter and illustrator. He was the great-grandfather of Benjamin Vautier ("Ben"), a famous contemporary artist. Benjamin Vautier was a painter born in Vaud in Swisserland and he studied in Geneva with Lugardon before becoming well known in genre painting with rustic subjects in Dusseldorf where he became famous together with Friedrich Kraus and Franz Defregger. His academic style, very drawn, with bright colors is characteristic of the Dusseldorf School in the middle of the 19th century.

  • Charles DOUSSAULT - A lady playing with a parrot
    Located in PARIS, FR
Charles DOUSSAULT 1814 - 1880 Oil on canvas 32.5 cm x 24.5 cm (52 x 41 cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower left "Ch. Doussault / 1836" Very beautiful period frame in gilded wood Charles Doussault was an orientalist painter-traveler. He made a portrait of Sultan Abdulmecid in 1846 and numerous paintings and drawings from Romania, Syria and the Holy Land. He studied with Ingres and Eugène Devéria before becoming the collaborator of the Devéria brothers. He then exhibited at the Paris Salon mainly in the 1830s to 1850s, first troubadour subjects before leaving and travelling first to Romania and then to the Middle East in 1844, to Turkey, to Damascus and to the Holy Land from where he brought back subjects for oils and watercolors which made him famous in Paris in the 1840s and 1850s. Our painting dates from his first period, precisely 1836. It was painted when Charles Doussault was still young and working as a collaborator of the Devéria brothers . It may be a portrait of an actress in costume in an opera or theater play like Achille Devéria did many of them (Marie Dorval, Elisa Rachel, Fanny Elssler...
