Charles DOUSSAULT 1814 - 1880 Oil on canvas 32.5 cm x 24.5 cm (52 x 41 cm with the frame) Signed and dated lower left "Ch. Doussault / 1836" Very beautiful period frame in gilded wood Charles Doussault was an orientalist painter-traveler. He made a portrait of Sultan Abdulmecid in 1846 and numerous paintings and drawings from Romania, Syria and the Holy Land. He studied with Ingres and Eugène Devéria before becoming the collaborator of the Devéria brothers. He then exhibited at the Paris Salon mainly in the 1830s to 1850s, first troubadour subjects before leaving and travelling first to Romania and then to the Middle East in 1844, to Turkey, to Damascus and to the Holy Land from where he brought back subjects for oils and watercolors which made him famous in Paris in the 1840s and 1850s. Our painting dates from his first period, precisely 1836. It was painted when Charles Doussault was still young and working as a collaborator of the Devéria brothers . It may be a portrait of an actress in costume in an opera or theater play like Achille Devéria did many of them (Marie Dorval, Elisa Rachel, Fanny Elssler...

These painters traveled a lot and sought out picturesque sites, particularly in Normandy, Brittany, Switzerland and the Pyrenees. Blanchard participated in the illustration of “Picturesque and Romantic Travels in the Old France”. But the works of this romantic painter are rare because Blanchard died very young at twenty-nine year old ! We still know of him, in particular, a view of Bugey (dated 1846) which is at the Louvre Museum and a “Delicious Landscape” (from the 1840s) at the Salies museum at Bagnères de Bigorre...

Born in Queens, NY to a family of artists, inventors and actors, Lizbeth Mitty grew up painting and writing. Her work has been exhibited in galleries and museums in both the United States and abroad and is held in public and private collections including the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The New York State Museum, The Orlando Museum of Art, The Zimmerli Archive, The U.S. State Department, and Trierenberg Holding AG (Austria). In contrast, for much of Mitty's career, scrap yards and other sites of urban devastation, locations of organized chaos, formally beautiful, yet apocalyptic and terrifying. Similarly, the chandeliers speak of decadence, sadness, elegance, death and hope. By 2017, the chandeliers began to open and morph into architecture in the round. Gazebos and scrap dominate a verdant post-apocalyptic landscape...
