About the Item

Alphonse Mucha 1860-1939 Czech Fruit Signed "Mucha" (lower left) Pastel on paper "Art only exists to communicate a spiritual message." —Alphonse Mucha Alphonse Mucha's distinctive aesthetic defined the Art Nouveau movement and elevated commercial art to a recognized form of high artistic expression. Through his dynamic posters and illustrations, Mucha captured the cultural zeitgeist of the Belle Époque and established stylistic innovations that continue to resonate in contemporary visual culture. This pastel exemplifies his revolutionary vision and reveals the genesis of one of his celebrated poster designs, entitled Fruit. Mucha’s preliminary pastels for his posters hold particular significance within his oeuvre. As art historian Anna Dvorak observes, “His preparatory works reveal the intellectual rigor behind his seemingly effortless compositions.” This work highlights his captivating creative process while also standing as a complete and compelling composition in its own right. The female figure is rendered in a luminous palette of azure blues, coral pinks and golden flesh tones, her presence both serene and sensuous. The plate of fruit she holds symbolizes abundance and sensuality. Mucha’s signature sinuous lines sweep across the composition with the rhythmic beauty that brought him international acclaim. Created at the height of his career in 1897, this pastel coincides with Mucha’s collaboration with the famed actress Sarah Bernhardt. Their artistic exchange helped refine his vision, and the figure’s dreamy expression, youthful visage and flowing hair adorned with blossoms reflect the feminine archetype he developed during this formative period—motifs that would come to define his mature style and propel him to international fame. Born in Moravia (now the Czech Republic), Alphonse Mucha rose from modest origins to become one of the most influential visual artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. His formal training began at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and continued in Paris, where a commission to design a poster for the legendary Sarah Bernhardt in 1894 became a watershed moment in his career. That collaboration transformed Mucha from an obscure illustrator into the defining aesthetic voice of Art Nouveau. His prolific output extended beyond posters to include jewelry design, architectural ornamentation, theater sets and monumental murals. After returning to his homeland in 1910, Mucha turned to projects celebrating Slavic heritage and national identity, producing works of cultural significance during a period of Czech political awakening. His influence endured through the psychedelic revival of the 1960s and continues today, with recent exhibitions at the Phillips Collection and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. This pastel, an important example of his preparatory work, was exhibited at the J. Paul Getty Museum in both 2012 and 2015. A museum dedicated to Mucha’s legacy stands in Prague, and his work is held in major collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Art Institute of Chicago, among many others. The authenticity of this work has been confirmed by John Mucha of the Mucha Foundation. Les fleurs du mal by Erté
By Erte - Romain de Tirtoff
Located in New Orleans, LA
Erté (Romain de Tirtoff) 1892-1990 Russian-French Fleurs du Mal(The Flowers of Evil) Signed "Erté" (lower right) Inscribed 114.6 (en verso) Gouache on paper Captivating and vibrant, this colorful gouache entitledFleurs du Mal showcases Erté's masterful creativity and keen eye. Inspired by Les Fleurs du mal, the famed volume of poems by French writer Charles Baudelaire, this ensemble marries light purple and green floral motifs with the suggestive form of red lips poised for a smooch. This daring yet feminine appearance encapsulates the Art Deco allure for which the artist's creations are cherished. The sophisticated arrangement emanates the fundamental richness and theatricality that can only be accomplished by Erté, often hailed as the "Father of Art Deco." First published in 1857, Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du mal was controversial for its suggestive content and themes of decadence and eroticism. The volume provided a wealth of inspiration for Erté and he drew from several themes to create original fashion sketches...
