What was happening in British history painting in around 1800? In recent discussions of the emergence of a British School of history painting following the foundation of the Royal Academy in 1768, this is a question which is rarely posed and one which is not easily answered. Examination of surviving Royal Academy exhibition catalogues reveals a profusion of artists’ names and titles, few of which remain immediately recognizable, whilst endeavours to explain the impact of exhibition culture on painting - such as the 2001 Courtauld show Art on the Line - have tended to focus on the first and second generation of Royal Academician, rather than young or aspiring artists in the early nineteenth century. Born in Sydney in 1910, Alan Robert Colquhoun Grieve studied at the Julian Ashton School and the East Sydney Technical College and with Australian artist Herbert Edward Badham. Alan Grieve has notably exhibited at Royal Arts Society in Sydney and was Vice President of the Australian Arts Society. His work is held in private collections the world over, including The Art Gallery of New South Wales, The Fred & Elinor Wrobel Collection in Sydney and the Howard Hilton Collection. He has won numerous art prizes during the 20th Century.
This painting was bought from Gordon Galleries in Double Bay, Sydney, New South Wales in circa 1962 by Major General Sir Douglas Kendrew KCMG, CB, CBE, DSO - Governor of Western Australia from 1963 to 1974.
The Three Sisters are an unusual rock formation in the Blue Mountains of New South Wales, Australia, on the north escarpment of the Jamison Valley. They are located close to the town of Katoomba and are one of the Blue Mountains' best known sites, towering above the Jamison Valley.

The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland.
Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep.
It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road.
It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. Hamilton Hamilton (1 April 1847 – 4 January 1928) was a painter and etcher, known mostly for his landscapes of the American West. Born in Oxford, England, he lived most of his life in the Eastern United States. He painted landscapes in New York, Connecticut, the American West, England, and France. He also painted portraits and drew illustrations.
Artistic career
Hamilton Hamilton was born in Oxford, England, on 1 April 1847. While young, he was a protégé of John Ruskin. In 1872, he began his mostly self-taught career as a portrait artist in Buffalo, New York. He created 47 landscape paintings during an 1873 expedition to Colorado which were chosen to be part of the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia. He spent 1878 and 1879 painting in Pont-Aven, Brittany, alongside Barbizon School painters.
He moved to New York City in 1881 and shortly after began to practice genre painting and etching.[6] He became an associate member of the National Academy of Design in 1886 and a National Academician in 1889. Until the end of the century, he and his family resided alternately in upstate New York, Long Island, Colorado, and England.[6] In 1907 and 1908, Hamilton spent two years painting landscapes in Southern California. Gordon depicts the "Strangled Planet" we live in: war, protests, and unrest abounds. At the same time, exploration, cooperation, and humanity persists. She uses European Medieval, Renaissance, and Neoclassical references around the main contemporary action. This is perhaps a reference to the uncertainty that is inherent in life—hardships as well as victories have always been depicted in grand compositions. The skeletons that climb, cling, and swing on either side of the painting are the reminders of this finite life.
Artist Bio
Kristy Gordon’s work is a frank and intimate reflection of her curiosity about other people, transformations and self-discovery. Her paintings hang in over 500 public and private collections worldwide including the Government of Ontario Art Collection. She has been a full-time, professional painter since 2004, exhibiting her work internationally and earning numerous awards including the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Grant (2010, 2013), an Exceptional Merit Award from the Portrait Society of America (2014), and was a finalist for the 2013 Kingston Prize for Canadian portraiture.
She has been widely featured in numerous magazines, art publications, radio and television shows, including International Artist, Fine Art Connoisseur, The Artist’s Magazine, Southwest Art and Bravo!’s Star Portraits.
Gordon has seven years of experience teaching and conducting painting workshops throughout North America. She has taught at numerous academies and schools including The Academy of Realist Art Ottawa, The Lake Country Art House, and The Okanagan School of Arts in Penticton and has also substitute taught at the New York Academy of Art. She has lectured at China Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing, New Century Artists in New York City and the Art of the Portrait in Washington, DC.
She received her MFA degree in Painting from the New York Academy of Art and holds a BFA in Drawing and Painting from the Ontario College of Art and Design. Additionally, she has studied classical drawing and painting at the Academy of Realist Art in Toronto and Andreeva Portrait Academy in Santa Fe. She has also studied privately with artists including Yuqi Wang, Odd Nerdrum, Juan Martinez, Jeremy Lipking.
