About the Item
Monogrammed lower right, 'DM' for David Monies (Danish, 1812-1894) and dated 1849.
Provenance: By descent in the family of the sitter, Peter Andreas Löser (1834–1857).
Framed in a substantial and period, carved wood and gilt-gesso frame.
Framed dimensions: 30.25 H x 2.5 D x 24.5 W inches.
David Monies showed early talent in drawing and, at the unusually early age of 12, was admitted to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen where he studied with J.L. Lund. Prior to finishing his studies in 1833, Monies was the recipient of two silver medals (1827, 1832). He undertook art trips to Munich and Paris (1835-1837) and, during this period, was awarded the 1838 Fonden ad Usus Publicos scholarship, a fund created by King Frederick V to further the studies of talented young artists.
In 1847, he was admitted as a member candidate at the Copenhagen Academy of Fine Arts and was promoted to full membership the following year. He won wide public recognition with his paintings of troops returning from the First Schleswig War. Other historical works also fared well, receiving both public and critical acclaim.
In 1859, Monies was appointed to a Professorship and, in 1867, was awarded the travel scholarship for poets, composers and artists. In 1874, he was appointed Knight of the Order of the Dannebrog and, in 1892, he received the Cross of Honour of the Order. Over the course of a long career, David Monies exhibited widely and with success and his work is held private and public collections including in the permanent collections of the Copenhagen Museum of Fine Art, the Aalborg Museum and the Fredericksborg Museum, among others.
