Jamieson (1895-1950) We are extremely fortunate to have been handling the works of the enigmatic British artist, F. E. Jamieson since the year we began art dealing, 1989. Over this time, coupled with our love of the Scottish landscape, we have bought and sold many hundreds of his paintings, in all their various guises and subjects and are considered by many to be a leading authority on the artist and his work. We are also in the early stages of publishing the Catalogue Raisonne for this artist, of which this painting will be featured. Mr. Jamieson was largely a painter of Scottish landscapes and loch scenes. Born in 1895, Jamieson lived on the south coast of England and was contracted to a large department store to supply them with his paintings. He was an ambitious man and keen to sell more works than through just one shop. In order to do this, he started to sign his works with pseudonyms other than his own name, in order that he could sell his work to a wider audience. It worked and it is considered that Jamieson at least 15 different pseudonym names on his paintings. In addition to selling through furniture shops, Jamieson would travel door to door offering his paintings to housewives and private buyers. In our years of researching the artist, we heard one story related to us by an old customer who remembers that Jamieson started selling door...

Landscape oil on canvas 31 x 46 cm 12 1/4 x 18 1/8 in Stephen Bone was a 20th century landscape, mural and portrait painter. He was born in London, the son of the artist and etcher Sir Muirhead Bone. The family lived in Italy between 1910 and 1912, before Stephen returned to attend Bedales School. He went on to study at the Slade School of Art, which now forms part of University College London, from 1922 to 1924 under Henry Tonks. Bone won a gold medal for wood engraving in the Paris International Exhibition the year after his graduation. The rest of 1925 was spent touring Spain with his father and travelling to France, Greece and Scandinavia. In 1929 he married his fellow artist, Mary Adshead, who had been a student with him at the Slade. In the early years of their marriage, the two travelled around Greece, Italy and the British Isles together. An exhibition of Bone's work, alongside works from Robin Guthrie and Rodney Burn, was held at the London Goupil Gallery in 1926. In 1932 Bone became a member of the New English Art Club, having exhibited with them since around 1920. During the 1930s, he exhibited landscapes and portraits at the Royal Academy, the Fine Art Society, the Lefevre Gallery, and the Redfern Gallery, including a solo exhibition in 1938. An exhibition at Ryman's Galleries, Oxford, in 1936 included oil paintings of forty-one British counties that Bone had created during his travels. During his time in Stockholm in 1936-37, Bone produced many works and had a number of exhibitions. Though Bone is most recognised for his landscape paintings, he was also an illustrator, portraitist and mural painter. In 1925 his woodcuts illustrated the book 'Of the Western Isles...

Jamieson (1895-1950). The painting is signed by Jamieson to the lower right corner with his favoured pseudonym, "W. Richards". The painting captures this brooding Highland landscape and the deep and dark waters of Loch Tay, one of the most stunning lochs in Scotland. Loch Tay is a magnificent dark stretch of water, 15 miles (24 km) long and around 508 ft deep. It’s the largest loch in Perthshire and one of the deepest in Scotland. To the north, the loch is flanked by the impressive bulk of the Ben Lawers mountain range, much of which is designated as a National Nature Reserve. The main A827 road runs high above the loch, west from Kenmore. The contours are gentler on the southern shore and Sustrans Cycle Route Number 7 runs along a quiet unclassified road. It's hard to believe that ancient settlers once lived on Loch Tay, inhabiting artificially created islands known as crannogs. There are eighteen crannogs on Loch Tay, most are now submerged but a large crannog near the northern shore at Kenmore can be clearly seen. View of the Bergsee is an original modern artwork realized by the Austrian artist and painter Josef Brunner in the middle of the XIX Century. Original Oil painting on Canvas cm. 72 x 3 x 102 (canvas). A beautiful original XIX Century decorated frame is included (total dimensions: 100 x 5 x 130). Both the work and the canvas are in very good conditions. Beautiful and intense oil painting depicting the Austrian mountain lake Bergsee. The painting is characterized by a particular play between lights and shadows: the light indeed is distributed in an extremely suffused but homogeneous way on the view but it is also able to create that sense of magic that characterized the whole landscape. The color of the lake therefore assumes a transparency and an iridescent blue that tends to the green and reflects the color of the surrounding mountains. The sky appears full of rainy clouds but they still allow the rays of the last sun to shine on. The general vision conveys calm and tranquility thanks also to the refined use of color and the play of lights and shadows, the turquoise and the pale opaque blue of the lake is perfectly emphasized by the various green tones of the trees. The white, gray and light brown rocky mountains embrace the lake and the cloudy sky in shades of blue increases the feeling of tranquility. The landscape is desolate; the only signs of life are the three fishermen on the shore: they are three small figures painted in different poses and illuminated by the light too. The surface of the water reflects in a spectacular way the surrounding landscape, it is similar to the surface of a mirror. The style, fantastic and almost dreamy, is into the full Germanic Romanticism. Mindful of Caspar David Friedrich's memoirs (Greifswald, 1774 - Dresda, 1840), the author certainly took his cue from the style of the German and the Austrian Romanticism; tangible signs of Romantic painting are the choice of the subject, an uncontaminated Nordic landscape, and the almost fairytale atmosphere that we find in the composition.
