About the Item

Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior (English, 1840–1921) View along the Thames at Bisham Abbey, oil on canvas, circa 1910 Signed Bottom right This beautifully observed riverscape by Alfred Augustus Glendening Senior captures the gentle serenity of the Thames at Bisham Abbey, a site rich with centuries of English history. Painted circa 1910, the work exemplifies Glendening’s late style—mature, harmonious, and touched with a quiet nostalgia that resonates through both the landscape and its historic subject. Bisham Abbey, with its medieval tower partially visible behind the veil of summer foliage, serves as a subtle focal point amid the rolling trees that line the far bank. The tranquil surface of the Thames reflects the soft evening sky, rendered in a delicate interplay of rose, mauve, and pale blue. In the foreground, two figures tend a small boat at the river’s edge, adding a narrative of rural life and human presence without disturbing the overall calm of the scene. Glendening was a master of the Victorian and Edwardian pastoral tradition. Though he began his working life as a railway clerk, he became a celebrated landscape painter, exhibiting widely at the Royal Academy and other major institutions from the 1860s onward. His works were prized for their evocative light, naturalistic detail, and their embodiment of an England untouched by industrialisation. In this composition, the brushwork is soft yet assured, and the palette glows with the warm tones of late afternoon light. It is a picture not only of a place, but of a sensibility—an elegy to a vanishing rural world, deeply rooted in national memory. A superb example of Glendening’s mature work, this painting combines historical depth with pastoral beauty, and is housed in an original, richly carved gilt frame befitting its elegance. The painting is framed in a Vintage English hand made frame.

David Bates 19th century English River landscape, with fisherman by the river side. David Bates was born in Cambridgeshire. He spent most of his early life in Worcestershire, where he became apprenticed at the Royal Worcester Porcelain Works. A painter in both oils and watercolours, Bates visited North Africa, before returning to paint landscapes mostly of Wales and Scotland. He shows the influence of Benjamin Williams Leader (1831-1923), Joseph Thors and S.H. Baker. David Bates also made small oil sketches of hedges and plants, which were usually inscribed on the reverse. The artist’s works display considerable technical virtuosity, ranging from the serene landscape, to the uneven swagger of his later works, which were noticeably less colourful. Although Bates was more than capable of producing refined landscapes, he was equably as capable of painting detailed...
