Whaling Ships at Delano Bay, Baffin Island records a historical scene from the early 1800s, when hardy sailing vessels followed the retreating sea ice in Davis Strait. But the cold-sea atmosphere is timeless — and a challenge to capture. “I’ve always been interested in the visual contrast of ships among the Arctic ice fields,” Cooper Hart, the 65-year-old artist says. “The colors that create the atmosphere in my pictures are the result of careful underpainting … seven or eight washes or more of color to obtain an effect. Sometimes it turns out nothing like you had in mind, but you must be open to what happens and not just what you wanted to happen.” The marine paintings of Cooper Hart have been recognized for their highly accurate portrayal of America’s maritime history. His realistic watercolor images have won him national recognition in the field of marine art. Featured in the pages of Sea History, the journal of the National Maritime Historical Society, his work has twice won the Award of Excellence at the Mystic Seaport Maritime Museum in Connecticut. Cooper is a self-taught painter whose artistic career is rooted in his experiences working in the busy shipyards of Seattle as a young man. It was there, in the home of the Alaska fishing fleet, that he saw the docks bustling with activity as the fishermen and marine craftsmen prepared their boats for the long voyage north. In the effort to bring a sense of realism and accuracy to his paintings he has often joined the fleet in Alaskan waters to observe their work firsthand. The inspiration for his work is drawn from his own experience and from the marine artists of the past. His traditional style of painting can be attributed largely to the influence of the American Luminist movement of the mid-19th century. The Luminists were characterized by their reverence for the natural world as divine manifestation. Their use of radiant light and sensation of space, with their glowing atmospheric effects, evoke an almost mystical response. “I particularly admire the work of John Kensett, Sanford Gifford, and Fitz Hugh Lane. I try to capture the Luminist’s crystalline, transparent light, for which watercolor is so well suited. Even as a young child I was mesmerized by their paintings of the American wilderness and found them profoundly moving.” Cooper makes his home in the Snohomish River valley near Puget Sound, in Washington State. Working exclusively in watercolor, his subjects range from historical to contemporary.

A very attractive painting by the celebrated Pennsylvania artist Frank F. English, the location is in Point Pleasant, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. The painting depicts a scene of blue skies with two farmers tossing hay with pitchforks & two horses harnessed to a hay wagon, with barns to the background. The painting signed lower right " Frank F. English", condition is excellent this very charming painting is ready to hang on your wall. Biography Frank F. English was born in Louisville Kentucky in 1854. In the early 1880s, he studied for five years in the evening classes of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. His instructors included Thomas Eakins, James P. Kelly and Thomas Anshutz. However, English's reputation primarily rests with his outstanding facility as a watercolorist; most of his known paintings are executed in this medium. English's propensity for its use coincides, appropriately enough, with the watercolor's growing popularity among other American painters. The American Water Color Society brought the medium special prominence by the late 1860s, and acceptance on the level of oil painting in 1876. That same year, the society was invited to display its works at the Philadelphia Centennial Exposition. Its members exhibited 116 watercolors, and their public exposure was enormous. It is safe to assume that during the 159-day Centennial, Frank English was among the nearly 10 million exposition attendees, surpassing attendance records at all preceding world's fairs.
