"Door #12 (Magazines)" Oil & paper on wood panel, earth tones & black, texture

2018

About the Item

"Door #12 (Magazines)" (2018) by Francesca Reyes Original oil, acrylic and paper on wood panel; measures 8" H x 6" W x 1" D From the artist's door series, depicting doors that she has photographed mostly in Philadelphia where she lives and works. There are three dozen pieces in this series. This one shows a weathered doorway, textured with layers of paper depicted as weathered by the elements. Francesca captures light and shadow, detail and texture in the most appealing ways to convey the interesting visual features of the architectural subjects she's depicting. Oil Painting / Miniature and Small-Scale Paintings / Representations of Architecture / Earth Tones / Figurative Art / Minimalism and Contemporary Minimalist Certificate of Authenticity included Framing available upon request Statement from the Artist: "Through the lens of landscape, my work investigates conceptual understandings of habitat while exploring the formal properties of drawing, painting, and ceramics. My most recent ceramic series, Light Diaries, much like my paintings, acts as a love note to the city. These clay vignettes are a union of fragile objects and fleeting moments; sunlight kissing the cornice of a rowhouse, the subtle gradient of a morning sky, a window staring at a brick wall. While I move through the world and different stages of my life, I am continuously searching for places of respite. Light Diaries is an amalgam of observations and impressions from my surroundings. There are things that feel familiar, tugging at some tucked away memory, while others seem new and wholly unique. As a ceramicist, I’ve learned to surrender a certain level of control, allowing each clay painting to become an unexpected balance of intention and chance."

My painting is an inquiry. I make images as a way of responding to experiences that are important to me. Experiences that help me to understand why I’m in this world often happens when I am outside in large open spaces. Painted images act as a tool. I respond to the spaces my art suggests. That response is usually non-verbal. I am interested in the experience of non-duality that “getting lost” in big spaces can sometimes produce for me. The paintings have gone through a range of artistic treatments with the recent years seeing a focus on space, light, textures, atmosphere and distance. My landscape paintings are made from memory, not from on-site drawings or photographs. I use memory as a filtering agent to remove non-essential visual elements. When a work is successful, it must have a sense of poetry. There is nothing “new...
