About the Item
This gorgeous Edwardian Scottish oil painting is by noted Scottish artist George Houston. Painted circa 1910 and in portrait orientation, the composition is a winter's snowy landscape with a stream running vertically with a snowy field to the right and a wooded hill to the left. The viewer's eye is then drawn upwards to snowy hilly fields divided by hedges and trees with patches of blue sky on the horizon. There are footprints in the snow beside the stream, human and dog, but the landscape is quiet now. This is a beautiful winter painting with an amazing range of colours in the water and perfect depiction of the snow. The portrait orientation works well with the angle of the stream and is enhanced by a fabulous frame. An excellent example of Houston's work and of Scottish art.

Condition. Oil on canvas, 30 inches by 18 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a beautiful ornate gilt frame, 37 inches by 25 inches, in good condition.
George Houston RSA (1869-1947) was born at West Lynn, Dalry, Ayrshire. He lived most of his life around Ayrshire, Edinburgh and Argyll, although he was widely travelled for his time, visiting Japan in 1911. He is best known for his consistently high technical skill, capturing the atmosphere and changing climate and seasons of his favourite Argyll and Ayrshire. He painted mainly in oil and watercolour but also produced etchings. Member of The London Society of 25. Elected Associate Royal Scottish academy 1900. RSW 1908, Royal Institute 1920 and Royal Scottish Academy 1925. Exhibited in Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Europe and the USA. Represented in Glasgow Art Gallery (9) and other Scottish galleries.

George Houston
George Houston was born in Dalry in 1869 and educated at Saltcoats Public School and Glasgow School of Art. He lived most of his life in Dalry, painting his native Ayrshire, but he also maintained a studio in Glasgow and spent time painting in the Inner Hebrides and around Loch Fyne. Houston became an Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1909 and then an Academician in 1925. He died a Dalry in 1947.

This superb British Edwardian figurative landscape oil painting is by noted animal artist Edwin Noble. Painted in 1904 it is a large and detailed painting of a young man, kneeling in a grassy thicket with his two dogs, a lurcher and terrier. He is restraining the dogs whilst his ferret goes down a rabbit hole in the hedgerow. Two dead rabbits are already lying on the grass beside them. Beyond is a county landscape of fields and trees. The young man in his stripped shirt and waistcoat and the two white dogs really stand out in the mass of greenery around them as do the white wild flowers at their feet. The detail and brushwork are superb. This is an excellent example of Edwin Noble's work as an animal painter in the Edwardian period and also depicts country pursuits.

Provenance. From the collection of Derek Parker and Peter Wynne Morris, Interior designers, antique dealers and collectors over sixty years.
Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 50 inches by 40 inches and in good condition.
