About the Item
This is a very rare painting by Louisville, Kentucky native Goldsborough Cowan Robinson. He was born in 1887 to Charles Bonnycastle Robinson (1853-1928) and his wife Helen Blasdell Avery Robinson. Charles B. Robinson was a Louisville merchant and owner of the Robinson-Hughes Company. Family roots on both sides go back to Virginia and Maryland.
After attending the University of Virginia in 1907, as
recorded in the UVA Record Catalog, Goldsborough was listed as living with the Robinson family in Anchorage as an artist in 1910. However, by 1920, the family is listed as living in New York City. The last record found for Goldsborough was an October, 1913 manifest for the S S Lusitania which left Liverpool and arrived in New York on October 10. Just over one year later, Goldsborough Cowan Robinson died on November 11, 1914. He was buried at Cave Hill Cemetery.
The painting may have been a fairly developed landscape sketch. It could have been done on the family property in Anchorage, or nearby. It is oil on canvas, 20” x 25 1/2”. The scene is an open field flanked by two trees and wooded edges beyond. Robinson used a soft color palette for this work. There are areas of bare canvas here and there, especially along the right and bottom edges. This may indicate that it is not a completely worked out painting. Regardless of this fact, the painting reads as a soft impressionist landscape and is highly decorative. There is a sense of movement to the foreground trees as they seem to announce and introduce the viewer to the field beyond. The painting is not signed on the front but is actually signed in pencil on the backside, where the canvas wraps over the stretchers. It is in good condition, with no visible repairs or damaged surface.
The painting is housed in a carved period American Impressionist frame with an antique gold finish. It is nicely detailed with carved corner elements. The overall framed measurements are 26” x 32”. It is in good condition but there are a few scratches and dings here and there. There also seems to be a ghost mark in the finish from a now-removed plate in the center of the bottom rail.
This rare Impressionist work by a member of an important Louisville family offers the opportunity to be added to a local collection. It’s such a shame that Goldsborough Cowan Robinson died at just age 27, never being able to develop a full professional artistic career. Although it is not certain how he fit into the art scene in Louisville at the time, this painting could be a piece of the larger puzzle that is always looking to be completed.
