About the Item

Signed and dated oil on board figures in landscape by French post impressionist painter Gustave Cariot. The piece is set in Wiesbaden, Germany depicts a breathtaking view of the River Rhine running through Rhine Valle in Germany. The work depicts two ladies walking on a forest path which is dappled with sunlight through the green branches of the trees. Signature: Signed & dated 1939 lower left Dimensions: Framed: 24.5"x30" Unframed: 17.5"x23" Provenance: The collection of the artist's son Pierre Albert Gustave Cariot - thence by descent Gustave Cariot's father was a porter in the Marais district of Paris and wished his son to follow in his footsteps. Cariot served an apprenticeship but was drawn to a career in the arts. He spent his free time studying design and composition and sketching in the city and the surrounding countryside. Gustave Cariot was initially attracted to the tonalities of pointillism but his enthusiasm for the technique was short-lived. Instead, he developed a highly personal and unusual technique that imparted a powerful luminosity to his work as a whole. He was however prepared to abandon this technique on occasion in the interests of painting delicate landscapes. He painted a large number of landscapes, many of them featuring the Rhineland. His last 'suite' of paintings was devoted to the River Seine in all its different seasonal aspects. Cariot was a member of the Société des Artistes Indépendants. He exhibited at the Salon de la Société des Beaux-Arts, the Salon d'Automne and the Salon d'Hiver.

American Impressionist: Springtime, a sunny path in France 19thC oil painting
By William Baptiste Baird
Located in Norwich, GB
This beautiful and light filled painting testifies of a new dawn: in the 1880s the landscape and animalier artist William Baird turns to Impressionism. Our Sunny Path, with looser brushwork and lighter colours, convey the fleeting nature of the present. Our lovely oil on canvas may well be homage to Claude Monet - according to Baird's inscription on the stretcher, it was painted in Mantes, which is only about 6 miles from Vétheuil, where Monet was living and working in the 1880s! William Baptiste Baird was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1847, but as an adult moved to Paris to perfect his painting technique. In Paris, Baird studied under Adolphe Yvon...
