Charles E Genge
"On the Forest's Edge" Impressionist Lush Landscape Oil Painting Canvas Framed

Early 20th Century

About the Item

This piece is a pertinent example of Charles Genge most sought after works, depicting a colorful view of the Forest. As a British Post Impressionist artist, most of Genge's works were produced in the Early 20th Century, between 1900- 1920, with this painting completed in 1910-1920's. He was known for his charming compositions and with a passion to portray life in bold powerful marks and serene views. This painting is signed by the artist lower right and comes housed in a ornate gold tone giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 24 x 20 inches Frame measures 30 x 26 inches Charles Genge was born in 1874, and he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. Genge is considered a leader of the British Post Impressionists, and in his early years, the artistic foundation was laid for the rest of Genge’s career, as an artist who rejected academic traditions and believed that art should be available to all. Charles Genge was a dedicated teacher and one of the founders of Bethnal Green Working Men’s Institute, where he offered tuition until 1925. During his earlier career, his works were exhibited at Goupils, the Royal Society of British Artists, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters, and the New English Art Club. And in 1927, Genge was appointed Curator at the RA Schools. Genge’s success is due partly because his work displayed a real understanding of the power of colour and mark-making in the French artists – the Impressionists and Post-Impressionists, the Fauves and the Cubists – whose work was still very influential in Britain. And also because his works were also infused with a love of the everyday life of the countryside and the suburbs, which he painted in both England and France. Through his paintings, he demonstrated spontaneity and enthusiasm for the plein-air technique of painting, with bold applications of paint laid on paint and the use of dense stripes of colour. His works are distinguished by the excitement, brilliance, and beauty of the ordinary and familiar, British or French landscape scenes. This ability to combine a radical technique with these familiar scenes is what ensured that Genge’s work appealed to many. In 1930, his works were shown in the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, next to many other interesting artists, from Vanessa Bell and Roger Fry to Emily Beatrice Bland, David Bomberg, Muirhead Bone, and Jacob Epstein. Genge died in 1958, and although he had instructed his nephew, William Genge, to clear his studio and burn his paintings upon his passing, instead Genge’s paintings were stored and left hidden for many years. And eventually, the entire studio collection was handed over to Campbell's of Walton Street Ltd., in Knightsbridge, to offer them to the public. From there, the first major exhibition of Genge’s work was in June 1985, which had great success. And subsequently, his works were included in other exhibitions throughout the 1980s, and the following decade. In 1997, a small number of watercolours on paper were exhibited and sold in New York. The remaining paintings by Charles Genge were bequeathed to Campbell’s, after William Genge’s death in 2002. PROVENANCE: Newman Galleries, Philadelphia; Estate of a Private collection Main Line, Philadelphia; Private Collection Manhattan, New York; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

  • Printemps
    By Charles Levier
    Located in Costa Mesa, CA
A beautiful woman sits at an open window, gazing down at a small bird who has landed nearby in this serene portrait by Charles Levier. Warm orange tones are played off their complements in shades of blue, the artist utilizing several different layers of oils to create a subtle and relaxed view of a spring day near the sea. Beyond the window a small chapel sits on a peninsula, surrounded tranquil blue waters. This work, like many of Levier's, belongs to the French figurative movement of the Glorious Thirty (Les Trente Glorieuses) - the golden period of thirty years after WWII which were a time of great hope and prosperity in France. Inspired by Hollywood cinema, Charles Levier sought harmony in composition and purity of color and form. His said that his creations represented "a light and delicate world, of dark and subtle shades and colors." Levier worked in a somewhat abstracted, cubist style. Additionally he often employed the French technique of "cloisonnism" (after the French for "partition"), a style of post-Impressionist painting with bold and flat forms separated by dark contours, also seen in this work. The term was coined by critic Edouard Dujardin on the occasion of the Salon des Indépendants, in March 1888 and was commonly used by artists like Émile Bernard, Louis Anquetin, Paul...

Recognised as one of the best post-impressionist artists, Robin's skill and complete command of his palette set him aside from his contemporaries. Combining his deft and delicate touch with vigorous, dramatic brush strokes and palette knife work, he produced exceptional paintings. Enthralled by the enchanting river valleys of rural France that flowed through the luxuriant countryside and rolling fields, Robin's paintings perfectly capture rustic and typical French life. Feted by the French artistic establishment and his many patrons during his lifetime, the multitude of awards that Robin garnered for his work illustrates the acclaim in which he was held.
