Very nicely executed study of a street scene in Paris by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. This one is unsigned but is inscribed in his hand with "Paris" to the back and comes from a portfolio of his work which we are currently holding. Strong colours and sharp building images predominate this painting. Charcoal or oil pastel has been used to mark out the buildings and some road detail.
This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. The Paris scenes seem to have been completed in the immediate post-war years, around 1948 - many were dated. This one is undated. Lots going on here, with figures busily going about their day pushing goods carts. Vehicles are parked alongside the houses overlooking the river which would be just off the left of this image and out of the artist's view.
Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire).
condition report:
In good clean order, no tears or creases to the sheet (which is quite stiff watercolour paper). The two upper corners of the sheet have the shallow fold marks but these would be very hard to see once matted and framed. Very slight toning in the sky area, and one paint splash made by the artist on the left hand edge in the sky area.

Henri Miloch
