Henri Miloch
Ecole de Paris Mid 20th Century 1948 Paris Place de la Concorde

1940's

About the Item

Paris: Place de la Concorde looking towards Rue Royale by Henri Miloch (1898-1979) signed lower right and dated for 16th September 1948 watercolour and gouache painting on artist's paper, unframed Sheet:: 9.5 x 12.25 inches Very pretty painting by the highly regarded painter, Henri Miloch. It depicts Place de la Concorde with a cyclist making their way through the traffic. The artist was seated immediately by the fountain closest to Hotel de la Marine (the imposing Government-owned building shown in the centre of the painting) and Hotel de Coislin on the opposite side, separated by Rue Royale This one is signed. This work forms part of a collection we currently hold by Miloch. This one is also precisely dated 16th September 1948. The vast majority of the Parisian work we have by this artist was dated in most cases, with this style, from the later post-war part of the 1940's. Henri Miloch was born in Trieste (Italy) in 1898 but studied at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and was a member of the Society of French Artists. His life and work was very much centred in Brittany, in north west France, much of his work portrays Breton maritime life in the various ports, and local town observations, especially in the Concarneau area where he worked and exhibited for much of his artistic career. From 1959 he also had a workshop in Tours (Val de Loire). condition report: No tears or creases. Upper right corner has a small old fold on it. Left edge of the paper is rough and uneven, we have reduced the width measurement of the painting slightly to accommodate for that. Colour is good, and clear. More muted tones than some of his work we are currently handling but we feel this makes for a more understated, and rather lovely, image.
