About the Item

Henry H Parker British, (1858-1930) Doeford Bridge, Clitheroe Oil on canvas, signed & further inscribed in pencil to stretcher Image size: 11.5 inches x 17.5 inches Size including frame: 16.5 inches x 22.5 inches Provenance: MacConnal-Mason Ltd, Duke Street, London This attractive scene featuring Doeford Bridge near Clitheroe is by Henry H Parker. Two figures can be seen on the bridge overlooking the river Hodder. Doeford Bridge is located in Bowland Forest Low, Lancashire, 9 miles north-west of Clitheroe between Chipping Village and Whitewell. It spans over the river Hodder, near the confluence of the rivers Hodder and Loud. The bridge was built around 1770 and was constructed with squared sandstone blocks formed into 2 segmented arches with a central triangular cutwater. It was made a grade II listed building by Historic England in 1952. Henry Parker was born in the St Pancras area of London on 27 June, 1860 and was christened Henry Deacon Hillier (or Hillyer) Parker. His parents were Thomas, a draughtsman and lithographer and Lucy Parker. The family lived in Gillies Street, St Pancras. He studied at the St Martin’s School of Art and initially started his working life as an Illustrator for the Illustrated London News. However, by the age of 23 he had become known as a landscape painter. He married Charlotte Eliza Wilson in June, 1888 and together they had six children. His son Frederick became a draughtsman. He spent most of his adult life in Tottenham living at Elmer Road and later 13 Somerset Road. He died in London on 12 June, 1930. Parker mainly painted rustic views of the South East of England, in Surrey, Sussex and Kent as well as views of the Thames. He also painted in Worcestershire and Wales. As well as signing his paintings Henry H Parker, he also painted under the pseudonyms of H D Hillier and possibly HD Hillyer. It is believed he used a pseudonym because of contractual obligations to a London gallery. In addition to being known as Henry Hillier Parker, he is also sometimes referred to as Henry Hillingford Parker. His style, with its quick and impressionistic brush strokes has often been compared to B. W. Leader. Like many of his contemporaries, he concentrated on painting "pure" landscapes, a genre that he mastered early in his career. His landscapes are lush and tranquil, frequently featuring figures in a cornfield, on a boat or walking down a country path. The scenes are often sunny and bright and the waters are calm and soothing. Parker is one of the few top calibre artists who does not appear to have exhibited in England, although his works appear frequently on the market and are as popular today as they were in his lifetime. Examples of his work are held by the Hartlepool Museum, Haworth Art Gallery, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art, University of Oxford and the Williamson Art Gallery. A number of Museums and art galleries across the world also have his paintings on display including St. James’s Museum, Montreal, Auckland Museum and the Melbourne Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears a label for MacConnal-Mason. The details on the label indicate it was owned by the gallery between 1990 and 1995. Condition: As with all of our original antique oil paintings, this work is offered in ready to hang gallery condition, having been professionally cleaned, restored and revarnished. © Benton Fine Art

19th Century river landscape oil painting of Colwich Hills
By Henry Dawson
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Henry Dawson British, (1811-1878) Colwich Hills from the Bridge at Great Haywood Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1860 Image size: 19.5 inches x 29.5 inches Size including frame: 27 inches x 37 inches A wonderful painting of Colwich Hills from the bridge at Great Harwood, Staffordshire by Henry Dawson. A man can be seen riding a horse over the bridge as another figure looks across the water towards the hills. Meanwhile, a barge sails along the canal past two fishermen. The bridge depicted in this painting lies over the canal junction of Great Haywood, a short distance away from Colwich. This junction was built to join the Grand Union Canal to the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canals. Both the bridge and junction are still in use today and the view of the hills remains relatively unchanged. Henry Dawson was a landscape artist born in Hull on 3 April, 1811 to William Dawson and Hannah Shardlow. The family moved to Nottingham when he was still an infant. He is known to have spent time at the national school in Nottingham, however, due to family circumstances had to leave school to start work at an early age in the lace industry. He was largely self-taught and painted during his spare time. Around 1835, he left lace making to work full time as an artist. He studied under James Baker Pyne (1800-1870) in 1838 and in the same year made his debut at the Royal Academy, exhibiting a number of works there until 1871.He also exhibited at the British Institute from 1841 and also at the Liverpool Academy, where he was elected an associate in 1846 and a Member in 1847. He married Elizabeth Whittle in Nottingham in 1840 and they lived in Mansfield Road, Nottingham where the first of their children were born. Two of his children, Henry Thomas Dawson (1841-1918) and Alfred Dawson (1843-1931) also became artists as did his grandson Montague Dawson (1895-1973). Although he achieved some success in Nottingham, for financial reasons he decided to move his family to Liverpool, where they stayed from 1845 until 1849. He moved again for similar reasons to Croydon in Surrey living at Middle Heath Lane and from 1854 he lived in Thorpe Green, Chertsey at Prospect Cottage. Being closer to the capital helped enhance his reputation and inspired by Turner he began to produce seascapes, riverscapes and coastal scenes often featuring architectural focal points. Dawson continued to travel around the country to paint the landscapes and coasts of England, frequently including castles such as this fine example. Around 1863, he moved to The Cedars in Chiswick where he spent his final years until his death on 13 December, 1878. His work is represented in many public art collections including the Birmingham Museum, Bury Art Museum, Ferens Art Gallery, Leicester Museum, Nottingham City Museum, Victoria & Albert Museum, Wednesbury Museum, Sheffield Museum, Wolverhampton Art Gallery and the York Art Gallery. Presentation: The painting is housed in a new English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition.
